Austerity Retail in Britain

This project from the Centre for Agroecology, Water and Resilience (CAWR) aims to critically examine the emergence of what we call ‘austerity retail’ initiatives amidst rising food poverty in Britain. These include ‘social supermarkets’ and other forms of ‘community shop’ offering highly discounted products, and often making use of ‘surplus’ or ‘rejected’ foods which would otherwise be thrown away. 


Regional Strategies for Sustainable and Inclusive Territorial Development (ReSSI) – Regional Interplay and Dialogue

The ReSSI project will examine how sustainable, inclusive and smart economic development (as defined by the Europe 2020 strategy) can be promoted by local and regional authorities in Europe, in the context of evolving landscapes of territorial governance and planning. 


Exploring ‘Disfluency Pride’ across Contexts and Communities

This project is looking at ways to creatively explore marginalised communication styles with communicators who may be considered dysfluent by dominant Western societal norms.


LIFT: A community-centered intervention to improve infant feeding practices among Pakistani and Bangladeshi families living in the UK

Earlier research revealed that Pakistani and Bangladeshi communities living in the UK may be more vulnerable to lower breastfeeding rates than previously thought. We are working with local communities to create resources to influence infant feeding practices.


IFS - The Intervention Toolkit

This project will produce a coherent system, supported by data analytics, to identify students at risk of underachievement at four UK institutions, and offer solutions in the form of appropriate, high quality academic interventions to ensure those students continue and succeed.

The UK and South Africa, while different, share trends towards inequality and the othering of migrants as responsible for social problems. This project uses storytelling to generate new bottom-up narratives to challenge dominant top down discursive politics of exclusion.
