Overview

Teaching English as a foreign language gives you the opportunity to travel the world. A degree in English Language and Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) may take you into a wide array of different contexts, from teaching air-traffic controllers in Madrid, to advertising executives in Rio de Janeiro, or university students in China. There are opportunities for working with charities and NGOs in the developing parts of the world, and there are also opportunities in the UK, as more and more people come from around the world to study, work and live here.

English is the official language of 54 separate countries, spoken by around 400 million people as their first language and used by around a billion more. Its importance socially, culturally, politically and economically fuels the demand for people certified to teach English throughout the world.

Successful completion of this course gives you the opportunity to attain an internationally recognised English as a Foreign Language teaching qualification (either the Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) or Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT)) while at the same time studying for a degree in English Language. As a trained specialist, you will have the opportunity to travel the globe and experience new cultures, while helping people to learn the English language and skills for effective communication.

Coventry is currently an authorised Cambridge Assessment English Centre, which enables you the opportunity to gain the professional and internationally recognised Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) or Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT), in addition to Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) degree subject to you meeting a certain grade and criteria.

This course has been designed in line with the criteria for accreditation by Cambridge Assessment English, which enables students the opportunity to gain the award of a Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) or the Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) at the end of the second year subject to meeting specific criteria.

This course (including modules 5030HUM and 5031HUM) is currently accredited by Cambridge Assessment English for the 2020/21 intake. If the accreditation of this course changes, we will notify applicants and students as soon as possible.

This course is designed to support your development not just with English language and linguistics subject knowledge, and practical teaching skills, but also with the awareness and technological know-how that will enable you to take advantage of the 21st century tools that enrich teaching and learning.

You will have opportunities to develop skills through authentic teaching practice, and to specialise in teaching English for academic purposes (EAP), teaching English to young learners (primary and secondary), and teaching English online.

Teaching English as a foreign language can be fun, challenging, hugely rewarding, and it enables you the opportunity to see the world and meet new people. Overview

During the first year, we examine the theories of learning and second language acquisition (SLA). We focus on learners and their contexts; the reasons people have for learning English and the needs and expectations they bring to the classroom. We’ll consider the roles of teachers, leading into the study of classroom management and standard teaching techniques.

Language awareness is clearly an important consideration, so you’ll have opportunities to develop your own knowledge ‘about’ English to help you teach the language effectively. You will analyse how the learning of the language systems of grammar, lexis and phonology is integrated into the development of learners’ skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. You’ll be introduced to the fundamentals of language and linguistics, along with other English students. This should give you insights into how language works and how people use language when speaking and writing across a wide range of contexts, so that the messages they want to get across have the intended impact.

In addition, you will also be able to take an Add+Vantage module which can allow you to develop their CV by taking credits in an area of study not explicitly related to their degree.

Overview

In your second year, you’ll continue to have the opportunity to develop your teaching skills through weekly practice sessions teaching learners of English and who attend specially arranged classes at the University. You’ll be taught about adapting published teaching materials to better suit the needs of the learners you are teaching, as well as designing your own materials starting from written and spoken texts available through a range of media.

You’ll have the opportunity to deepen your knowledge of learning strategies by studying, analysing and reporting on the way people use the English language in real-life situations. For example, one of your TEFL assignments in Year Two is a case study of an individual learner of English – a learner from your teaching practice group. You’ll collect samples of speech and writing and analyse their strengths and weaknesses in order to create a study plan to help your learner continue developing proficiency in English.

Overview

After the end of the second year, you have the option to take either a work placement year* (in the UK, or abroad) or a study-abroad year*, and if you do so, you will take a non-credit bearing module which will help you learn from and reflect upon your experiences.

Please note that we are unable to guarantee any placement or study abroad opportunities and that all such opportunities may be subject to additional costs (e.g. travel, visas and accommodation etc.), competitive application, availability and/or meeting any applicable visa requirements. Overview

In the third year, your studies can culminate in a dissertation or professional portfolio through which you pursue and research an idea or issue that fires up your own interests. Past students have chosen exciting topics like the use of WhatsApp (and other apps) for teaching English or the influence of teacher motivation on the learners’ motivation.

Finally, you will again have the opportunity to choose an Add+Vantage module.

  • A selection of modules are available via the Add+Vantage module programme which will allow you to volunteer in schools to gain experience as a teaching assistant.
  • Current significant links with a wide variety of employers such as secondary schools, magazines, newspapers and local charities, many of whom may offer professional experience opportunities.
  • Opportunity to apply for a work placement*, which has led previous students to experiences such as English subject mentors at Cardinal Newman School and Grace Academy in Coventry, a marketing and events social media and newsletter editor at the Coventry Irish Society, an editorial intern at Grazia Magazine, a freelance journalist at Coventry News and Sport, and English teachers at partner universities in Spain and China.
  • Field trips, which in the past have included a visit to the Language Show Live in London in October – currently Europe’s biggest exhibition for language education and language service providers. Please note, Field Trips may be subject to all/a combination of the following - availability, competitive application process, additional costs and any visa requirements that may be applicable. Our main study themes are:

  • Teaching English as a foreign language: Explores the principles, teaching methodologies and techniques underlying the teaching of English as a Foreign Language. You’ll observe lessons taught by experienced teachers, as well as gaining your own practical experience in delivering increasingly effective lessons in weekly teaching practice sessions. You will have the opportunity to learn to critically evaluate published teaching materials and deepen your understanding of the rationale behind the language and skills practice activities that are presented in TEFL course books.
  • Language and linguistics: The analysis of the nature and structure of English Language, its meanings, forms and contexts, including how words and sentences are formed, how we make and hear sounds, how languages change and vary, and how language is organised in the brain.

Coventry was one of the first UK universities to embed Cambridge Assessment English teaching qualifications into the second year of study. Students who achieve a result in TEFL above the average grade in their first year, and meet our own criteria, are given the opportunity to study for the Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA). Students who do not achieve the above result and do not meet the criteria can opt for the Cambridge Assessment English accredited Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT).

The emphasis of teaching is on language as discourse, an approach that enhances both an awareness of language as an instrument for constructing meaning and also the range of ‘tools’ for teachers, but we also examine different styles of language, for example through modules covering sociolinguistics topics. Your course will be based on series of lectures, with associated seminars and practical workshop classes, for example, using a concordance programme to investigate various linguistic phenomena in a corpus of texts. In addition, your personal tutor will review and discuss your progress with you (upon request) and will be available for advice.

Our excellent industry links enable us to host an exciting programme of guest speakers covering topics such as the impact of the Internet and social media on language and how it is used. Please note, guest speakers are subject to availability and change.

Your weekly teaching practice sessions provide an opportunity for members of the local community to improve their English language skills; some currently come to us through a link we have with Coventry Refugee and Migrant Centre, while others are people who’ve come to live, work and study in Coventry. You’ll also have the opportunity to go on fieldtrips, for example past trips have included to the Language Show Live in London in October and the Harry Potter Studios in London or a night at the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry catching a play for those interested in creative writing.

This course will be assessed using a variety of methods which could vary depending upon the module.

Assessment methods include essays, reports and critical commentaries, oral/poster presentations, blog/vlog/online forum posts, and digital tests and portfolios of exercises.

The Coventry University Group assessment strategy ensures that our courses are fairly assessed and allows us to monitor student progression towards the achieving the intended learning outcomes.

Upon successful completion, you should be able to:

  • Apply acquired knowledge and skills in language teaching and linguistics to be an effective teacher of English in the communities you go on to work in.
  • Use your understanding of theories of language learning and pedagogy to evaluate, select and adapt teaching materials in order to meet learners’ needs.
  • Utilise digital tools and technologies to create bespoke materials in offline and online formats that enhance both classroom-based and online teaching and learning.
  • Reflect critically and analytically on your own and others' practice in order to continue developing teaching skills.
  • Demonstrate advanced understanding of the history, evolution, spread, and nature of the English language as well as how English can vary and change according to context, identity and social interaction.
  • Communicate effectively in professional, academic and social contexts, and across a range of mediums including in person, on paper and online.
  • Think critically and independently, effectively navigating information, producing knowledge, communicating findings and keeping abreast of the latest developments in the fields of language teaching and linguistics.
  • Step into a range of roles commensurate with your aspirations, be they related to post-graduate study or employment in teaching or the arts and cultural, creative, business or digital industries.
  • Meet challenges with confidence in the skills, resourcefulness and professionalism your have developed over the course.

The contact hours may be made up of a combination of face-to-face teaching, individual and group tutorials, and online classes and tutorials.

As an innovative and enterprising institution, the University may seek to utilise emerging technologies within the student experience. For all courses (whether on-campus, blended, or distance learning), the University may deliver certain contact hours and assessments via online technologies and methods.

This course is focused on supporting graduates, development of the skills to work and teach English all over the world, so the curriculum explores a range of different cultures and contexts through modules such as Language and Globalisation and Language and Society.

You will be given opportunities to engage with international students at home and abroad, for example through online projects with students at partner universities in other countries, and in person through field trips abroad (subject to additional costs, application, availability and/or meeting any applicable visa requirements) or when students come to visit us in Coventry.

We strongly encourage you to broaden your theoretical, cultural and practical references, providing opportunities to broaden your horizons by living, studying or working abroad on a placement year. For example, you can study English at Limoges in France or teach English in Spain or China (locations may be subject to change).

There are volunteering opportunities to mentor overseas students in Coventry as ‘English buddies’, and invitations to attend scholarly talks by overseas visitors, which have previously included academics from China, France and Spain. We also offer a range of short visits and field trips abroad, which are reviewed annually and may be subject to additional costs and meeting any applicable visa requirements. Recent field trips have included a visit to Spain to meet students who had collaborated with CU students on an online project.

At Coventry University, you can enjoy a whole host of multicultural and multilingual activities, such as the international film club and the French and Spanish conversation clubs. You can learn another language with the university-wide Add+vantage Scheme) or the Linguae Mundi programme.

Graduate Immigration Route visa

Based on current information from the UK Government, international students whose study extends beyond summer 2021 may be eligible for a visa under the UK Government’s Graduate Immigration Route, which will enable students to stay and work, or look for work, in the UK at any skill level for up to two (2) years. Check the most up to date guidance available to check your eligibility and any updates from the UK Government before making an application or enrolment decision.

According to the British Council, there are 1.5 billion people learning English worldwide. There are hundreds of language schools throughout the UK, as well as opportunities to teach English as a foreign language (TEFL) in places like Japan, China and other East Asian countries, the Middle East, parts of Eastern Europe, Spain, Italy and Germany.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be in a position to start applying immediately to a range of potential employers, including commercial language schools, education and development organisations, government departments, multinational companies, The British Council and a whole host of international volunteer organisations and NGOs.

Alternatively, if you decide not to teach, successfully completing this course should have prepared you for any career that involves the use of language and particularly those professions where communication dominates: the media and cultural industries, primary and secondary education, public relations, marketing and advertising.
