This course has a common first year.

The common first year enables you to work alongside students doing similar courses to you, to widen your knowledge and exposure to other subject areas and professions. Modules

Story and Skills Lab – 30 credits

Story sits at the heart of everything we do. Whether we’re filmmakers, photographers, TV producers or content creators, we all need to hone our skills and storytelling abilities. Through a series of hands-on workshops, you will learn about the storytelling techniques, key concepts and technical tools used by creatives to tell their stories, developing a diverse portfolio of production work. The module explores the history of the discipline, fosters appreciation of contemporary contexts, encourages you to relate practice to context, and supports the development of skills in debating, articulating understanding, writing and scriptwriting, while also providing technical skills workshops and insights into understanding audiences.

You should learn to:

identify how cultural and contextual factors influence project opportunities and outcomes
select and curate information to support the conceptualisation and refinement of audience-specific creative outcomes in film and/or media production and performance
engage with emerging debates, information and observations to inform personal responses and directions.

Filmmaking 101 – 30 credits

Are you ready to bring your ideas to life on screen? Filmmaking 101 introduces you to essential short film production skills, combining technical practices with artistic expression. Explore narrative film language, cinematography, location sound and continuity editing while gaining insight into cinematic storytelling and the roles key crew members play in the production of a short film. This module covers problem-solving and solution techniques, creative processes and the interpretation of briefs, while fostering creative risk-taking and developing an understanding of film grammar, technical skills and critical engagement through screenings.

You should learn to:

apply problem-solving capabilities to define, develop and refine creative ideas
recognise and respond creatively to real-world challenges within film and/or media production and performance
engage with creative thinking techniques and experimental processes to develop personal understanding and practice.

Life Through a Lens: Factual Production – 30 credits

The truth matters. Discover the power of factual storytelling, learning to capture the truth with authenticity and creativity. Develop skills in composition, documentary aesthetics, representation and technical mastery. In hands-on workshops, you will explore factual production, before negotiating a project with tutors and exhibiting your work to an audience. This module aims to develop your ability to explain goals and intentions, reflect on your experiences in relation to practice, and communicate decisions effectively, while building interpersonal skills, exploring documentary filmmaking techniques, engaging in screenings and critiques of non-fiction films and learning to archive and record your practice.

You should learn to:

articulate intentions through a range of creative outcomes in film and/or media production and performance
record and reflect on project experiences and activities in the development of personal practice
build interpersonal skills and capabilities when engaging with stakeholders, project negotiation and development.

Play, Experiment and Explore – 30 credits

Develop your creative techniques. Engage with core production techniques through hands-on workshops and creative tasks. Analysing existing works to inform your projects, build your confidence with industry-standard tools and collaborate in team-based environments. Through experimentation and critical reflection, gain practical skills such as podcasting or film aesthetics, nurture your creativity and deepen your understanding of contemporary production methods.

You should learn to:

develop ideas and practical solutions through specialist making techniques and processes in film and/or media production and performance
respond to practical challenges and reflect on their relative value in the context of your developing professional/codes of practice
reflect on and refine ongoing project work to embrace personal interests and recognise potential career aspirations.

Exploring Games and Animation – 30 credits

This module introduces you to game design and animation. You will have the opportunity to learn about game engines, visual coding, scripting, asset creation and game mechanics before developing a playable 2D game demo. Explore different animation techniques, including hand-drawn, stop-frame, 2D and 3D techniques, analysing animation direction before creating a portfolio of engaging animations that showcase creative storytelling and technical skills.

Music Video Directors – 30 credits

Explore music video production as a promotional tool for artists and study its evolution. Learn about the techniques directors use to create music videos, and how labels and independent artists use video for branding and engagement. This module aims to help you develop your networking skills, with an opportunity to work with real clients to negotiate a brief and delivering work to deadlines.²

Studio TV and Live Streaming – 30 credits

Explore the evolution of broadcast video from traditional studio TV to contemporary live streaming. Study formats such as magazine shows, game shows, concerts and e-sports videography, and learn about the types of studio-based production roles and how to use technical equipment. You would have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and develop live production skills by working with studio crews to plan and execute a live broadcast.²

Content Creation – 30 credits

Explore content creation by examining formats, audience engagement and monetisation through ads, sponsorship and branded content. Develop technical and creative skills by producing original content for your own channel and marketing it on social media, while also creating branded content for a real client.² This module blends strategy with hands-on production to encourage you to create impactful and engaging content creation.

Compulsory

There’s no better way to find out what you love doing than trying it out for yourself, which is why a work placement² can often be beneficial. Work placements usually occur between your second and final year of study. They’re a great way to help you explore your potential career path and gain valuable work experience, whilst developing transferable skills for the future.

This module² provides you with an opportunity to reflect upon and gain experience for an approved placement undertaken during your programme. A placement should usually be at least 26 weeks or equivalent; however, each placement will be considered on its own merits, having regard to the ability to achieve the learning outcomes.

International Study/Work Placement – 0 credits

This module² provides you with an opportunity to reflect upon and gain experience for an approved international study/work placement undertaken during your programme. A work/study placement should usually be at least 26 weeks or equivalent; however, each placement will be considered on its own merits, having regard to the ability to achieve the learning outcomes.

Start planning for your future career in the media industry. Research relevant networking events, job opportunities, career pathways, entry-level positions, recruitment schemes and entrepreneurial opportunities, before presenting your carefully considered strategy for developing your own media career.

Experimentation and Exploration – 30 credits

Focus on the relationship between media practice and research through a series of self-led applied research projects and further engagement with the contemporary media landscape. Take a playful yet purposeful approach to examine media techniques, mediums or creative practices. Through hands-on research and experiments, you would develop your skills and knowledge in your chosen area of media production.

The Storytellers – 30 credits

Investigate how creativity, storytelling and production skills come together across a range of media platforms. Discover how creative expression varies across mediums and specialisms, using storytelling skills and creative techniques to develop imaginative and original ideas for production. Work in collaboration with others to create an engaging and impactful media project.

Creative Media Production – 30 credits

What do you want to create? Radio? Podcasts? Films? Games? Photography? This module aims to help you plan and produce a passion project in a medium of your choice. Ideate and develop your creative ideas, negotiating a project brief with your tutor, and working collaboratively with others to realise your creative vision, applying technical mastery and effective production management.

We regularly review our course content, to make it relevant and current for the benefit of our students. For these reasons, course modules may be updated.

Teaching contact hours

As a full-time undergraduate student, you will study modules totalling 120 credits each academic year. You will normally study one 30-credit module at a time. A typical 30-credit module requires a total of 300 hours of study made up of teaching contact hours, guided and independent study.

Teaching hours

Teaching hours may vary depending on your year of study and selected modules. During your first year, you can expect 12-15 teaching hours each week. You will also have the option to attend additional sessions, including time with a progress coach or to meet with staff for advice and feedback. As you progress through your studies, teaching hours may reduce.

Guided and independent study

Throughout your studies, you will be expected to spend time in guided and independent study to make up the required study hours per module. You’ll be digging deeper into topics, review what you’ve learned and complete assignments. This can be completed around your personal commitments. As you progress through your studies, you’ll spend more time in independent study.

Online learning

As an innovative university, we use different teaching methods including online tools and emerging technologies. So, some of your teaching hours and assessments may be delivered online.

If you choose to study this course with a professional placement² or study abroad year, you will need to pay a tuition fee³ to cover your academic support throughout your placement year. Students commencing their professional placement in the academic year 2027/28 will pay £1,500 if they are paying UK fees, or £1,800 if they are paying international fees.

The rights of Irish residents to study in the UK are preserved under the Common Travel Area arrangement. If you are an Irish student and meet the residency criteria, you can study in England, pay the same level of tuition fees as English students and utilise the Tuition Fee Loan.

**EU Support Bursary

Following the UK's exit from the European Union, we are offering financial support to all eligible EU students who wish to study an undergraduate or a postgraduate degree with us full-time. This bursary will be used to offset the cost of your tuition fees to bring them in line with that of UK students. Students studying a degree with a foundation year with us are not eligible for the bursary.

How do you know if you need to pay UK or international tuition fees?

We carry out an initial fee status assessment based on the information you provide in your application. Your fee status determines your tuition fees, and what financial support and scholarships may be available to you. The rules about who pays UK (home) or international (overseas) fees for higher education courses in England are set by the Department for Education. The regulations identify all the different categories of student who can insist on paying the home rate. The regulations can be difficult to understand, so the UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) has provided fee status guidance to help you identify whether you are eligible to pay the home or overseas rate.

If you meet all the criteria required by any one category, including any residence requirements, your institution must charge you the home rate. You only need to find one category that you fit into.

Facilities

Coventry University has invested in superb arts facilities⁴ with Ellen Terry, Delia Derbyshire and the Tank forming your primary learning locations. All within a minute's walk of each other in the city centre, you will have access to purpose built studios and a well-stocked Media Loan Shop. Here you can borrow an extensive range of specialist, professional equipment, including 4K and HD video cameras, DSLR cameras, tripods, audio equipment and lighting. Kit is allocated on a first come first served basis via the booking system which you will get to know well!

Television Studio

You’ll have access to our on-site television studio The Tank, offering specialist equipment such as large cameras, mixing facilities and fibre-optic wiring throughout.

Photography Suite

This specialist facility is available to media students to take and process photos in a professional environment. There is also support for printing, high-end scanning and film processing.

Our media loan shop provides you with access to the equipment and support you need to excel in your studies – from basic audio recorders to professional cameras and expert advice from our technicians.

Example roles have included working as assistant editor for Sunset and Vine on rugby and football coverage, as a runner on the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing, as video editor for the Sidemen, as assistant producer for Envy Post Production, as casting assistant on Channel 4's ‘A Place in the Sun’, as creative producer at Narrative Entertainment, and as radio station producer at Global FM, among many more.

Student Contract

By accepting your offer of a place and enrolling with us, a Student Contract will be formed between you and the university. A copy of the current 2025/2026 contract is available on the website for information purposes however the 2026/2027 contract will apply for the 2026/2027 intake. The Contract details your rights and the obligations you will be bound by during your time as a student and contains the obligations that the university will owe to you.
