Introduction
An art and design degree can open the door to a wide range of careers across the creative industries. From design studios and creative agencies to global brands, galleries and cultural organisations, there are opportunities across the creative industries and new ones continue to emerge as technology and creativity evolve.
Wherever your interests lie, university is a chance to build your creative practice, develop a portfolio that reflects your strengths and discover where your ideas could take you.
Develop your creative practice
Your portfolio is one of the most important tools you'll take with you after graduation.
Throughout your studies, you'll have opportunities to respond to live briefs, work on creative projects, exhibit your work and, depending on your course, gain industry experience through placements. Every project helps you refine your ideas, experiment with new approaches and create work that showcases your skills to future employers or clients.
Along the way, you'll also develop transferable skills that are valued across the creative industries, including creative thinking, communication, collaboration and problem-solving.
Learn through real-world projects
Creative careers are built on collaboration, curiosity and the ability to turn ideas into reality.
That's why project-led learning is such an important part of studying art and design. You could work alongside students from different creative disciplines, respond to industry-inspired briefs and experience the full creative process, from developing concepts to presenting finished work.
These experiences don't just help you build your portfolio; they also prepare you for the way creative professionals work in industry.
How Coventry University students turned creative projects into career opportunities
For many students, university projects become stepping stones into industry.

Automotive and Transport Design student Hanil Kim secured a role with automotive company SAIC after winning an international vehicle design competition. Alongside the competition, he was also recognised with the Undiscovered Talent Award at the CDN People Awards, celebrating his potential within the automotive design industry.
"Being involved in the SAIC Design Challenge has been a unique experience. I was really surprised to win, but also very proud. What makes it extra special is the prize of a full-time position with SAIC and I'm now working as an automotive designer at their studio in London. It's such an incredible opportunity."
Reflecting on his time at Coventry University, Hanil says the opportunity to work with industry partners during his studies helped prepare him for life after graduation.
Fashion, Brand and Communication student Poppy Whitford also turned her university work into a career opportunity. An award-winning campaign she developed during her studies earned her a placement with Tesco's fashion brand F&F, giving her valuable industry experience before she graduated.
"I'm really happy to have won the award – it's a great achievement and the placement that is offered to the winner is an amazing opportunity. This is a competitive industry, so this is really valuable for me."
Poppy says the freedom to develop her own creative interests and projects during her final year helped her build confidence in her abilities.
"The course at Coventry University has been fantastic, particularly the final year because I've had so much freedom to develop my skills and pick my own modules and projects. My tutors are great and I feel confident that I can use the skills I have developed within the industry."
Create in spaces designed for creative thinking
Creative ideas need the right environment to grow.

Students have access to specialist studios, workshops and digital spaces in the Delia Derbyshire Building, giving them the opportunity to experiment, create and refine their work using industry-standard facilities. Alongside these spaces, experienced tutors and technical staff provide guidance and feedback to help students develop their ideas and push their creative practice further.
