Interior Architecture and Design BA (Hons)

Compulsory

Challenge traditional perceptions of space and structure. Engage with concepts of fragmentation and cohesion, exploring how dissonance can spark innovative design solutions. As you investigate the balance between chaos and order, challenge yourself to experiment with symmetry and asymmetry, creating designs that are visually striking and thought-provoking. Explore innovation and iterative thinking techniques, engaging with change and uncertain knowledge, questioning assumptions, situating ideas in real-world contexts, applying AI, developing 2D technical drawing and 3D modelling skills, and practicing self-reflection and evaluation.

Compulsory

Explore how to map human emotions and experiences through design. Examine the emotional resonance of interiors, designing spaces that evoke specific feelings and reactions by merging psychology, spirituality and spatial aesthetics. Emphasis is placed on teamwork, and you’ll engage in collaborative projects, navigating the complexities of shared creativity and building a collective vision. Cover practical decision-making, documenting personal processes, teamworking and understanding roles in project contexts, sharing and presenting ideas, inclusive communication, applications of AI, and skills in 2D technical drawing and 3D modelling.

Compulsory

Investigate the role of materials, textures and construction methods in interior architecture. Explore sustainable practices, innovative materials, cradle-to-cradle products and fabrication techniques, all aimed at enhancing your design outcomes and promoting environmentally responsible design. Select techniques appropriate to creative intent, practise discipline-relevant methods, explore career goals and ambitions, apply entrepreneurial approaches to practice, respond to project briefs and develop awareness of industry contexts and potential career pathways.

Compulsory

This module provides you with an opportunity to reflect upon and gain experience for an approved placement² undertaken during your programme. A placement should usually be at least 26 weeks or equivalent; however, each placement will be considered on its own merits, having regard to the ability to achieve the learning outcomes.

This module provides you with an opportunity to reflect upon and gain experience for an approved international study/work placement² undertaken during your programme. A work/study placement should usually be at least 26 weeks or equivalent; however, each placement will be considered on its own merits, having regard to the ability to achieve the learning outcomes.

Optional

Critically engage with your personal design practice through continuous reflection and refinement, ensuring your approach aligns with your future career pathway. Create a manifesto that outlines your personal design values and ethics, helping shape your unique perspective. As part of this process, work on self-branding and creating an object, artefact or space that represents you as an individual designer.

Compulsory

Enjoy the freedom to formulate your own briefs and engage in your own design project that reflects your considered interior sector pathway and practice. Synthesise your prior learning, shaping a personalised and distinctive project. Challenge and test personal ideas, position yourself as an innovative practitioner, advance process-based thinking, question disciplinary norms, apply research methods such as site, user and trend analysis, develop critical thinking and concepts, engage in self-evaluation and reflection, ideation and iteration, document the design process through sketchbooks and design trails, sketching and concept modelling, apply AI and participate in presentations and critiques.

Compulsory

Examine sustainability and eco-conscious design practices while engaging with your peers. Through team-working, focus on repurposing materials and exploring the adaptive reuse of buildings and spaces. This collaborative approach challenges you to think creatively about how design can contribute to a more sustainable and environmentally responsible future. Record and present project activity, define roles and responsibilities in team settings, develop skills in listening, contributing and leading, practise negotiation and project negotiation, audit for sustainability and engage in research and reflective practice.

Focus on cultivating creative fluidity within the realm of interior architecture. Explore how flexibility, agility and adaptability are key attributes of a designer and their designs. The emphasis is on unlocking your creative thinking and generating inspiring concepts, leading to dynamic and experiential outcomes, with exciting twists to fuel your journey. Present and articulate personal practice, refine work toward a specialist focus, situate practice within future industry and emerging trends, develop concepts and aesthetics, engage in ideation and iteration, apply design evaluation processes, document through sketchbooks and design trails, manage design data, model-making, and use technical workshops and 3D computer modelling.
