Develop the skills and confidence to become an independent sports therapy practitioner, equipped to work in healthcare, sport or private practice. Learn how to support a wide range of clients, from children to older adults, and from beginners to elite athletes.

Injury prevention and athlete welfare: become proficient in designing, implementing and evaluating injury prevention programmes.
Clinical examination and assessment: develop knowledge of anatomy, biomechanics, and pathology to assess musculoskeletal conditions, diagnose injuries and determine treatment pathways.
Therapeutic interventions and rehabilitation: gain hands-on experience in manual therapy, exercise rehabilitation and evidence-based therapeutic interventions for effective injury management.

Study in our multi-million-pound Alison Gingell building with a specialist sports therapy suite, physiology and biomechanics laboratories and industry-standard equipment⁴.
Our dedicated lecturers bring experience from working with international, national and local athletes, and within successful private practices. They are committed to support your development as a future sports and exercise therapist (staff subject to change).
Previous students have provided support at the World and British Transplant Games and have worked with a variety of elite sports teams including Birmingham City FC, Coventry City Football Club and Coventry Blaze Ice Hockey Team.
Graduates of this course go on to pursue careers in areas such as elite sports teams, rehabilitation, healthcare and research. This course is designed to help you prepare for opportunities across the sports therapy and health industries.
This course aims to build a strong base in key scientific disciplines such as anatomy, biomechanics and exercise physiology. This equips you with the knowledge to understand human movement and recovery and to apply it effectively in injury prevention, assessment, treatment and rehabilitation.

Modules

Upper Limb Anatomy, Assessment and Injury – 30 credits

A strong foundation in anatomical knowledge is essential for the effective assessment and management of musculoskeletal injuries in sports and exercise therapy. Develop your understanding of upper limb musculoskeletal anatomy, covering key bony landmarks, muscles, tendons, ligaments and neurovascular structures as a basis for clinical assessment.

Building on this anatomical knowledge, you should also develop palpation skills to accurately identify and examine musculoskeletal structures. Apply this understanding to assessment techniques, including range of motion (ROM) testing, muscle function evaluation, and ligament integrity testing, enabling them to recognise normal and altered movement patterns.

Explore common upper limb injuries and develop essential underpinning knowledge to support injury recognition and management. With a strong emphasis on practical application, this module underpins the foundational skills necessary for future study in advanced clinical assessment, injury management and rehabilitation.

Introduction to Sports Injury Management – 30 credits

This module introduces key principles of subjective assessment, enabling you to establish treatment goals and implement safe, effective interventions. Through the study of soft tissue therapy, thermotherapy, and cryotherapy, gain practical skills in therapeutic modalities, assessing their physiological effects and evidence-based efficacy. Consideration of red flags, serious non-musculoskeletal pathology, and referral pathways will be integrated to promote safe and informed clinical decision-making.

Learn what it means to be a professional sports therapist, focusing on your legal, ethical and practical responsibilities. Explore the job opportunities available and understand what’s expected in clinical practice, including confidentiality, GDPR and professional behaviour.

Build strong communication skills to support person-centred care, showing empathy and working effectively with people from different backgrounds. Learn how to carry out a subjective assessment, set treatment goals and apply safe, effective treatments.

With extensive hands-on learning, this module aims to give you the essential skills needed for future training in injury assessment, injury management and rehabilitation.

Physical Activity and Health – 30 credits

Understand how physical activity can support the prevention and management of chronic diseases. Explore the causes of common health conditions and learn how both active lifestyles and physical inactivity affect health.

Examine the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms that contribute to the development of chronic disease considering factors involved in different life stages, including older adults and pregnant women. Explore how to prevent illness and injury through exercise and apply UK health and activity guidelines to support your practice.

Develop practical skills in health assessment—such as measuring blood pressure, heart rate, BMI and blood glucose—to monitor people’s health. Design and deliver exercise programmes using the FITT principle to support a range of people, from those with chronic conditions to those looking to stay healthy.

Take a deep dive into the structure and function of the spine and learn the importance of this in sports and exercise therapy. Build a strong understanding of how the spine works and how to identify key parts through hands-on palpation.

Learn how to carry out thorough spinal assessments and use safe, effective manual therapy techniques to manage spinal issues. Explore common spinal injuries, what causes them, and how to treat them in a clinical setting.

Principles of Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation – 30 credits

Build the knowledge and practical skills needed to support people recovering from musculoskeletal injuries. Learn how to assess injuries and design safe, effective rehabilitation programmes using proven methods.

Explore different treatment approaches such as manual therapy, electrotherapy and exercise prescription, learning when and how to use them. Focus on progressing rehabilitation in a way that supports recovery and reduces the risk of further injury.

Practise how to monitor recovery, assess progress and adjust plans when needed. Consider the emotional and social effects of injury, ethical decisions and how to work with people from different backgrounds, helping you prepare for real-world work in sports and exercise therapy.

Injury Assessment and Clinical Reasoning – 30 credits

Learn how to assess peripheral musculoskeletal injuries using a structured, step-by-step approach. Combine your understanding of anatomy, physiology, biomechanics and pathology with practical clinical skills to carry out thorough assessments.

Develop your clinical reasoning by learning how to interpret what you find, explore possible diagnoses and know when to refer someone for further checks. Practise both verbal (subjective) and hands-on (objective) assessment techniques, including special tests, movement screening and neurological checks.

Learn how to spot serious warning signs (red flags) and movement issues that could lead to further problems. By putting theory into practice, this module helps build your confidence and decision-making skills for injury assessment in real sports and exercise therapy settings.

Sports Trauma and Field Based Care – 30 credits

Learn how to respond quickly and safely to injuries and medical emergencies in both sports and everyday settings. Combine theory with hands-on practice using real-life case scenarios to help you make confident decisions under pressure.

Explore how the body responds to trauma and learn to recognise the signs and symptoms of common sport-related injuries and medical conditions. Practise on-field assessments, develop action plan strategies and understand how to manage injuries and emergencies that sports therapists may face.

Learn how to carry out risk assessments, create emergency action plans (EAPs) and reflect on your experiences to improve your professional skills and readiness for future situations.

There’s no better way to find out what you love doing than trying it out for yourself, which is why a work placement² can often be beneficial. Work placements usually occur between your second and final year of study. They’re a great way to help you explore your potential career path and gain valuable work experience, whilst developing transferable skills for the future.

This module² provides you with an opportunity to reflect upon and gain experience for an approved placement undertaken during your programme. A placement should usually be at least 26 weeks or equivalent; however, each placement will be considered on its own merits, having regard to the ability to achieve the learning outcomes.

This module<sup>2</sup> provides you with an opportunity to reflect upon and gain experience for an approved international study/work placement undertaken during your programme. Performance Rehabilitation – 30 credits

Design and deliver advanced rehabilitation programmes for athletes recovering from musculoskeletal injuries. Learn about field-based exercises, return-to-play (RTP) protocols and athlete profiling using evidence-based methods to support safe, effective recovery.

Focus on training techniques, musculoskeletal adaptation and sport-specific re-conditioning to help athletes return to competition. Practical workshops will help build your skills in screening, functional assessment and performance monitoring using tools like force plates, GPS, and biomechanical testing.

This module also covers the role of psychology, nutrition, and teamwork with coaches and medical staff. By the end, you should be able to create personalised rehabilitation plans, make smart return-to –play decisions, and collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams to support athlete recovery.

Psychosocial Perspectives in Sports and Exercise Therapy – 30 credits

Explore and solve complex challenges that you'll face as a sports and exercise therapist. Learn how psychosocial factors and individual differences affect rehabilitation success for both individuals and teams.

Develop a deep understanding of readiness and return-to-play (RTP), considering the professional environments you’ll work in. This module also covers new technologies used in injury rehabilitation, encouraging you to evaluate their benefits critically.

Gain appreciation for working with multidisciplinary teams and engage in real-life case studies and problem-solving activities to prepare you for professional practice.

Clinical Practice and Professional Placement – 30 credits

Build the clinical skills and confidence you need to assess, manage and treat musculoskeletal injuries using evidence-based practice. Develop strong decision-making and communication skills to deliver safe, person-centred care and work effectively with other professionals.

This module offers the opportunity for supervised clinical placements within our own inhouse clinic where you’ll apply your learning in real-world settings and meet key graduate competencies for future employment within this field. Develop expertise in injury prevention, clinical assessment, treatment techniques, rehabilitation planning and return-to-play decisions.

Independent Research Project – 30 credits

Carry out your own research project in a specialist area within your discipline. With support from a supervisor, take the lead in designing, conducting, analysing, and presenting your investigation.
You’ll write up your findings as a scientific paper and deliver an oral presentation. You’re expected to show strong professionalism throughout, as well as organisation, independence, technical skills, and an understanding of research ethics and health and safety.

Teaching contact hours

As a full-time undergraduate student, you will study modules totalling 120 credits each academic year. You will normally study one 30-credit module at a time. A typical 30-credit module requires a total of 300 hours of study made up of teaching contact hours, guided and independent study.

Teaching hours

Teaching hours may vary depending on your year of study and selected modules. During your first year, you can expect 12-15 teaching hours each week. You will also have the option to attend additional sessions, including time with a progress coach or to meet with staff for advice and feedback. As you progress through your studies, teaching hours may reduce.

Guided and independent study

Throughout your studies, you will be expected to spend time in guided and independent study to make up the required study hours per module. You’ll be digging deeper into topics, review what you’ve learned and complete assignments. This can be completed around your personal commitments. As you progress through your studies, you’ll spend more time in independent study.

Online learning

As an innovative university, we use different teaching methods including online tools and emerging technologies. So, some of your teaching hours and assessments may be delivered online.

International experience opportunities

Our sandwich degree option allows a full-year work placement, which can be taken abroad, or you can undertake a study-year abroad². Past students in our college have been successful in securing places in Spain, France, Canada and the US. The Society of Sports Therapists (SST) also runs a travelling scholarship scheme for student members, which enables successful applicants to work abroad in various clinics or educational establishments. We also try to ensure there is an international perspective to course content and have previously visited the World Transplant Games in Argentina and participated in collaborative online international learning (COIL) projects with places such as Hong Kong.

Additional information

The course will include working with children and vulnerable adults. You will be asked to declare any convictions on your application. **EU Support Bursary

Following the UK's exit from the European Union, we are offering financial support to all eligible EU students who wish to study an undergraduate or a postgraduate degree with us full-time. This bursary will be used to offset the cost of your tuition fees to bring them in line with that of UK students. Students studying a degree with a foundation year with us are not eligible for the bursary.

How do you know if you need to pay UK or international tuition fees?

We carry out an initial fee status assessment based on the information you provide in your application. Your fee status determines your tuition fees, and what financial support and scholarships may be available to you. The rules about who pays UK (home) or international (overseas) fees for higher education courses in England are set by the Department for Education. The regulations identify all the different categories of student who can insist on paying the home rate. The regulations can be difficult to understand, so the UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) has provided fee status guidance to help you identify whether you are eligible to pay the home or overseas rate.

If you meet all the criteria required by any one category, including any residence requirements, your institution must charge you the home rate. You only need to find one category that you fit into.

Facilities

This course is delivered at Coventry University main campus, primarily in the Alison Gingell building⁴.

You will benefit from the outstanding facilities for sport and exercise sciences in the purpose-built Alison Gingell building, including sports and exercise therapy clinic, extensive sport and exercise science laboratories, gait analysis track and 3D motion capture software.

Sports Therapy Clinic

The Sports Therapy Clinic is run by final year Sports Therapy students under the supervision of qualified staff with second year students providing a supervised massage clinic twice a week.

Strength and Conditioning Suite

Our multi-purpose suite is equipped with multiple Olympic lifting platforms, a 20m gait analysis track, an anti-gravity treadmill and a 3D motion capture system.

Facilities are subject to availability. Access to some facilities (including some teaching and learning spaces) may vary from those advertised and/or may have reduced availability or restrictions where the university is following public authority guidance, decisions or orders.

Careers and opportunities

Accreditation from the Society of Sports Therapists means that on graduation you will be qualified to work as a sports therapist with professional teams, clubs or private clinics. Alternatively, you can access appropriate additional training to support professional football and rugby (additional costs, competitive application, availability and meeting any applicable visa requirements may apply).

The course includes a substantial amount of sport science, which can allow you the opportunity to move into other career options upon graduation, such as management or service delivery in sport and leisure centres. If you are more interested in the medical and health applications of exercise science, you could go on to work within cardiac and other rehabilitation teams within the NHS, or with local councils within sports development or exercise for health schemes.

Past graduates from this course have gone on to work at high levels of professional and semi-professional sports such as football, rugby and transplant sport. Other graduates have gone on to lead successful careers within private practice, both owning and working within a range of therapy clinics nationwide and internationally.

A proportion of past graduates have also utilised their skills within the NHS in rehabilitation departments.

We have a range of postgraduate courses that graduates would be well prepared to progress onto, enabling them to gain specialist skills relating to development of teaching, sporting potential or lifelong physical activity. Our PGCE courses allow entry to teaching careers and our more specialist MSc programmes in sport provide opportunities for graduates to develop skills in a more specific area of study.
