This clinically focused module aims to develop students’ knowledge and skills in the holistic management of patients with lower quadrant musculoskeletal disorders.
The module emphasizes the development of expertise within the musculoskeletal field and as such adopts a clinical reasoning approach to patient management, which is underpinned throughout by evidence-based practice and positioned within a biopsychosocial and patient centered framework.
This approach is designed to encourage the development of sound, effective and reasoned clinical practice. Throughout the course there is a strong emphasis on manual skills and mentored clinical practice allowing the student the chance to develop confidence and expertise in the management of musculoskeletal disorders. The module embraces and integrates the many diverse approaches currently employed in the assessment and treatment of musculoskeletal patients and in this way encourages student’s innovation of thought and practice.
This module aims to:
- Develop students’ clinical expertise within the musculoskeletal field
- Increase students’ confidence in the management of musculoskeletal disorders
- Provide students with the opportunity to learn from service users in the University setting and to receive specialist teaching from a variety of experts within the field of clinical practice.
- Support and encourage students in the use of specialist equipment available in the movement laboratory.
- The existing approaches to assessment and management of lower quadrant musculoskeletal disorders.
- Advanced clinical reasoning skills.
- The different pain mechanisms and issues of assessment, physiology and psychology within clinical practice.
- The psychosocial issues associated with lower quadrant dysfunction.
- How to manage patients with lower quadrant dysfunction.
- How to justify the selection of approaches to patient management in order to facilitate intervention planning, progression and modification.
In addition to this students will also have the chance to develop a deep and extensive knowledge of the current theories, approaches and research evidence which underpin contemporary manual therapy practice.

- The importance of clinical outcome measures in the development and justification of professional knowledge and clinical practice.
How will this course be taught
This module utilises a variety of teaching strategies and learning approaches. Core material will be delivered in interactive lectures and tutorials, which will be synthesized in a practical workshop and student led seminar setting. Peer learning & self-directed learning as learning strategies will be facilitated and encouraged throughout the module. The use of patients will integrate the students' clinical and theoretical knowledge within the process of clinical reasoning. Practical skills will be closely supervised to enable students to make the best use of their self-directed practice sessions.
The students will be encouraged to utilise MOODLE as an e- tool for distance learning to facilitate meaningful discussion on key topics.

- Applicants must have a professional qualification in Physiotherapy
- At least 1500 hours of post-graduate clinical experience in the neuromusculoskeletal setting
- HCPC registration
- CSP membership
- Coursework 1: 2500 word Project (60% of module mark)
- Coursework 2: 30 minute Practical Viva (40% of module mark)

The module can contribute to students’ professional development by advancing clinical and communication skills. Successful completion of this module can enhance students’ employability allowing them to move into higher positions within the field of musculoskeletal physiotherapy with the potential to influence clinical practice and service delivery. Research carried out at the university has shown that within 4 years of successful completion of the MSc course graduates have progressed within their chosen career (Green & Perry, 2008).
