Andrea Barzey

Associate Head of Performing Arts

On graduating, she founded M31 Dance Company based in Leicestershire and made several live and recorded works. The film ‘In-Transcience’ was shown at the BBC Short Film Festival in 1998 in Leicester Square. Since 1998, Andrea has been extensively involved in teaching, in a number of institutions, and became particularly interested in working with children from deprived backgrounds. From 1999, Andrea worked as head of dance at Uxbridge College, and then as head of performing arts from 2001. She was also an examiner for Edexcel and contributed to the writing of the new foundation degree in dance. As a choreographer and performer, her work is informed by released based techniques and the Alexander Technique. Andrea is engaged in research into the dancing body on screen, virtual motion and has recently begun investigations into film installation work. Andrea has an on-going collaboration with the film artist Katy Connor. Their most recent piece ‘Areole’ was funded by the West Midlands Capture project and commissioned by Walsall New Gallery and has been shown in a number of European festivals. She is currently involved in the JISC-funded D-TRACES project to embed Siobhan Davies RePlay within the BA dance curriculum.
