Identities and Resilience in Communities and Organisations

Focus of Our Research

The Identities and Resilience in Communities and Organisations (IRCO) team is led by Dr. Gavin Sullivan, senior team member in the Centre for Research in Psychology, Behaviour and Achievement (CRPBA). The team also comprises of Dr. Simon Goodman, Dr. Carlo Tramontano, and Su Jones, and Coventry University Psychology Department affiliates, Dr. Adam Jowett, Dr. Tom Evans, Dr. James Adie, Dr. Christine Grant and Dr. Gail Steptoe-Warren.

Our research links conceptual analyses and theoretical perspectives on communities and organisations at different levels within and across national groups to evaluate policies, interventions and practices. We aim to address the following research challenges and gaps:

  • Development of critical approaches to social issues, practices and the ways they are represented through the analysis of discursive and affective practices
  • Use of a wide range of methods (potentially in pluralistic combinations of quantitative-qualitative and/or qualitative-qualitative methods and including conceptual analytical methods) to test and generate conceptually-coherent theories
  • Creation of effective, innovative and inclusive interventions and policies to address personal, interpersonal and societal problems such as vulnerability and resilience in disaster responses, prejudice towards immigrants, and the societal and personal effects of inequality
  • Development of psychologically-informed and social scientific approaches to conservation education, conservation-related behaviour change and sustainable collective action
  • Investigation of the social discourses that are used to justify and maintain prejudicial behaviours, attitudes and feelings with respect to one’s own and others’ groups in multicultural societies
  • Extension of existing theories and research approaches to personal, social and collective identity, action, cognition and emotion
  • Increase understanding of the individual and group differences, network features, interactions and structures that impact on behaviour and resilience in communities and the workplace
  • Triangulate discursive, subjective, behavioural and physiological data to provide a clear understanding of the efficacy of interventions aimed at improving resilience, health, and wellbeing in communities, groups and collectives
  • Develop strategies, interventions and frameworks to support individuals, managers and organisations to understand enhance productivity, work-life balance, wellbeing and job effectiveness and reduce risk and errors at the organisational-level
  • Investigate and improve understanding of the causal and normative features of collective emotions at biological, individual, interpersonal, group/institutional, national and international levels along with their implications for collective action and intergroup relations.
