Financial and Economic Crime

Our cluster investigates financial and economic crime through interdisciplinary, impact-driven research. We focus on whistleblowing, compliance and emerging technologies such as AI to counter illicit finance, co-creating solutions with international stakeholders, law enforcement and regulatory authorities.

Focus of our research

We carry out interdisciplinary research focused on financial crime, whistleblowing and the role of new technologies. From the outset, our projects are shaped with stakeholders in mind, including international organisations (e.g. the EU, NATO and the NCA), law enforcement, financial institutions, government bodies, and the legal sector. This ensures our work has practical as well as academic value.

We involve postgraduate researchers and early career academics directly in international and collaborative projects, helping them build experience and develop as future scholars.

Our expertise is recognised through funding from major organisations such as Horizon Europe, the British Academy, the Society of Legal Scholars, and UKFIN+. Past and current projects include the EU-funded PROTAX initiative, which strengthened anti-tax fraud measures across Europe and research for the City of London Police that has influenced fraud investigation training. Our latest TRACE project uses AI to track and disrupt illicit financial flows linked to organised crime.

Overall, our aim is to produce research that improves policy and practice, supports integrity across public and private sectors and advances effective, technology-enabled responses to financial crime.
