Overview

Fraud is escalating globally and touches every part of society – individuals, organisations and countries. The KPMG Global Banking Survey (2019) noted that over half of survey respondents reported increases in both external fraud volume and value.

Successful completion of the MSc in Fraud Investigation Management or the MSc in Fraud Investigation Management with Professional Experience, will provide you with the necessary skills to properly manage the process of investigating fraud and to create a counter fraud culture within organisations.

These courses take an innovative, case-study led approach to learning, incorporating practical elements to provide you with simulated industry experience based on a real case study, which runs throughout the course. With input from industry you will also have the opportunity to practice investigation skills as well as to think critically and holistically at a management level.

Designed for graduates and professionals both within and outside the counter fraud industry looking to enhance their understanding of the management of the fraud investigation process, you will be given the opportunity to explore areas of fraud in greater depth.

The MSc with Professional Experience also provides you with the opportunity to undertake a six month professional experience either on or off campus.

Professional experience opportunities (whether within an external company or within the University) are subject to a competitive application and selection process. Such experiences may be paid or unpaid, and this will depend on what is being offered and agreed with the host organisation or University.

Students who are not successful in securing professional work experience outside the University will have the opportunity to undertake campus-based professional experience, which will deliver similar learning outcomes through supervised projects and activities designed to offer students the opportunity to integrate theory with an understanding of professional practice. Please note that fees for students on the Professional Experience route are £4,100 higher than the standard fees payable by students on the MSc Financial Investigation Management course without Professional experience.

Course information

Originally developed in response to industry recognition that an in depth understanding was required of how the fraud investigation process should be managed in order to secure the best available evidence in any sector, these courses build on this knowledge and encourage you to think critically about the management process. You will cover practical skills in modules such as Investigative Interviewing, Investigative Practice and Case File Preparation, and Intelligence Management. Dovetailing into this understanding is the recognition that organisations can improve their position in the fight against fraud by refining their anti-fraud policies and creating robust operational practices which is covered in modules such as Fraud Risk Management and Professionalism in Counter Fraud Practice, helping our graduates to contribute to the professionalisation of the counter fraud industry.

If you undertake the MSc with Professional Experience, you will complete the key elements of your academic study before your professional experience opportunity and therefore will be aptly placed to utilise your new knowledge in your host organisation or on campus experience and create a meaningful research project based on your knowledge, research and experience.

The MSc in Fraud Investigation Management and Fraud Investigation Management with Professional Experience, seek to produce graduates who are equipped with both a theoretical and practical understanding of the issues facing the counter fraud industry.

For students on the MSc Fraud Investigation Management with Professional Experience, the professional experience itself will involve different opportunities for students. Some students could undertake a traditional ‘internship’ (paid or unpaid depending on the host organisation, application processes and/or availability) through working within a host organisation that could be external to the University, or professional experience through a range of activities managed and delivered by the course team within the University. If you are not successful in securing a work placement you will participate in a supervised, campus-based projects designed to develop the same skills and competencies as the work placement.

In more detail...

These courses use a simulation case study which develops throughout the modules and helps to demonstrate the ongoing process of a fraud investigation. Each module in Semesters 1 and 2 for both courses will link to this case study and will be used in assessments.

The Fraud Investigation Management MSc can be studied on a full-time basis (over 12 months) or part time (over 24 months). The course begins in mid-September each year and is completed at the end of August one year later (full-time).

The MSc Fraud Investigation Management with Professional Experience course is offered full-time only, over 5 semesters (approximately 20 months) and is an extended Masters programme with a substantive professional experience component in semesters 3 and 4.

MSc Fraud Investigation Management teaching is on campus and the majority is delivered over two days a week for full-time students and one day a week for part time students, although the CMI (Global Professional Leadership) module may be scheduled on days other than these. Teaching methods for both courses include: Lectures and notes, videos and media clips, discussion based group work, case studies and student-led presentations. You will often be provided with recommended reading materials to engage with prior to, and outside of teaching sessions, such as book chapters, journal articles or other web resources.

We use a variety of assessment methods on these courses, as they strive to create as realistic an environment as possible including essays, presentations, interviews, reflective journals, reports and portfolios. Semester 2 for both courses contains simulated investigation activities designed to demonstrate knowledge from several modules in that semesters which mirror professional practice within the management of a fraud investigation.

Upon successful completion of the MSc Fraud Investigation Management or the MSc Fraud Investigation Management with Professional Experience you will be able to:

  • Offer new insights into the international field of fraud investigation, with specific skills, knowledge and a critical awareness of fraud so as to be able to be a thought leader in the industry in the future.
  • Manage and develop successful investigations taking account of the evidential considerations for both civil and criminal standards, using a range of digital and traditional resources.
  • Demonstrate a range of professional skills and attributes, which are particularly relevant to management across the global field of fraud investigation, such as analytical and critical thinking, problem solving, decision making, best use of digital resources, risk awareness, and the ability to influence and work with others.
  • Show originality and creativity in the application of knowledge in a fraud, corruption or financial crime, business or management arena.
  • Creatively develop knowledge and understanding of the principles of consultancy and the theories and practices found in leadership and use these to address fraud related problems.

Additionally the MSc Fraud Investigation Management with Professional Experience aims to:

  • Provide enhanced professional skills from a professional experience opportunity.
  • Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge and understanding of fraud and its global effects.
  • Critically evaluate fraud investigation techniques and their associated management issues.
  • Synthesise best practice from the body of knowledge and theory of fraud and creatively apply this to complex practical fraud investigation problems, and use available digital resources to resolve them.
  • Relate published research to contemporary global fraud threats, so as to be able to identify new or revised approaches to fraud investigation management.

Additionally on successful completion of the MSc Fraud Investigation Management with Professional Experience you will be able to:

  • Critically reflect on own practice and professional experience by evaluating development, progress and achievements.

You will typically have around 10 hours per week of contact time as a full-time student, delivered over two days (the CMI module may be delivered on a different day).
