The English for Business BA Top-Up aims to improve your language skills, primarily in terms of business, and general business understanding.
This course aims to help you develop your knowledge of the English language, so that in particular, you can operate in a business setting, whether in the United Kingdom or internationally. Our dedicated language centre contains over 2000 books and areas designed for private, quiet study, to help you absorb the English language.
As well as this, you have the opportunity to extend your existing knowledge of the theory and practice of business on a global scale in traditional lectures, seminars and practical workshops.

The top-up course, English for Business, emerged out of the development of partnerships between Coventry University and universities abroad. The result is the design and delivery of a final year top-up course at undergraduate level in the areas of English and Business.
This top-up course only offers a final year. Students must be able to demonstrate that they have attained the same level as a final year student in the UK, and so must have attended university or college in a Business or English programme overseas.

This course is ideal for those non-native speakers of English who wish to improve their general and academic English skills, as well as build on their knowledge of business, management and marketing.
- Your study in English will strengthen your effectiveness in business communication in a global environment.
- Your study of Business will allow you examine advanced level topics, relating theory and practice, in an international context.
The course offers a range of English, Business and English for Business subjects:
- Global Marketing
- Global Business

- Language and Society in Modern Britain
- English Language in Use
- Advanced Business English
You will choose six subjects. You need to have studied your chosen subjects previously, as this is a top up (or direct entry) course.
You’ll have a combination of traditional lectures, seminar discussions and online learning.
You’ll be assessed by tests and exams, as well as written coursework and oral presentations.
In a typical week you will normally have between 10-14 hours contact time.
In addition you should expect to spend about 24 hours a week on online, guided and independent study.

Students must satisfy the University’s general requirements for Level 3 direct entry:
- An IELTS score of 6.0 overall, at least 5.5 in each component
- Successful completion of Years 1 and 2 of an equivalent course in business, or business and English

EU student fees
EU nationals and their family members starting in the 2019/20 academic year remain eligible for the same fees as home students and the same financial support. Financial support comes from Student Finance England, and covers undergraduate and postgraduate study for the duration of their course, providing they meet the residency requirement.
For tuition fee loans
EU nationals must have resided in the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland for the three years prior to the start of their course. The purpose of that three year residency should not have been mainly for the purpose of receiving full time education.
For maintenance loans
EU nationals must have resided in the UK and Islands for the five years prior to the start of their course. The purpose of that five year residency should not have been mainly for the purpose of receiving full time education.
This course gives access to a wide variety of careers in global business, international organisations, cross-border marketing, tourism, banking, import/export, events management or the media, to name but a few.
Your cross-cultural awareness, your international experience and your ability to communicate effectively in business English means that you will be well equipped for job opportunities in any international or emerging market.
Alternatively, you could choose to develop your academic portfolio even further, through a postgraduate qualification in business, marketing, management, strategy, human resources, international relations or law.

By accepting your offer of a place and enrolling with us, a Student Contract will be formed between you and the University. A copy of the 19/20 Contract can be found here. The Contract details your rights and the obligations you will be bound by during your time as a student and contains the obligations that the University will owe to you. The University will charge the tuition fees that are stated on the course webpage and in the prospectus for the first year of study. The University will review tuition fees each year. For UK and EU students, if Parliament permit an increase in tuition fees, the University may increase fees for each subsequent year of study in line with any such changes. Note that any increase for UK and EU Students is expected to be in line with inflation. For international students, the University may increase fees for each subsequent year of study but such increases will be no more than 5% above inflation.
