Global Game Jam
Between 31 January and 2 February 2020, 45 students from multiple courses participated in a 48 hour games development challenge called ‘Global Game Jam’.
Coventry University’s new Interactive Media and Web Technologies course responds to an increasing demand in the creative industries for imaginative individuals with a flair for developing creative user interfaces, combined with web and media content development skills.
During the course, you will be given the opportunity to apply key programming, media production, scripting, user experience design and web development skills in creative contexts, and also contribute to exciting interactive media projects using emerging technologies such as virtual and augmented reality. The course is practically focussed, with an emphasis on the production of industry-ready portfolio material.

Students looking to break into the games industry had the opportunity to attend a guest lecture by prominent 3D games artist Alex Beddows, lead artist at Dekagon game art studio and 3D learning manager at Artstation.
This course is informed by theory and practice in visual information design in many forms, including, but not limited to: User experience design, web development, digital media and photography, video, 2D and 3D graphics, animation and the transmission of that content through Information and Communications Technology (including, but not limited to, Streaming Media, ‘smart’ television, web data services, smart devices, information displays, museum displays, AR and VR interfaces).

Interaction design, media production and user experience design are a critical skill set for many industries. Front-end development extends from the Web into mobile applications, interactive television, the auto industry, voice activated smart homes, online journalism and virtual reality design.
Upon success completion of the course, you should have acquired the skills to integrate contemporary design with the technical skills necessary to implement complex interactive user interfaces. The potential for employment of graduates extends far beyond web design and into the creative industries, media and manufacturing.
The key themes of the course are designing for the web (from front-end to full-stack), core user experience methodologies, media production, motion graphics and 3D content creation. This is supported by contemporary creative design theory.
A significant part of the course is studio based content development (web and media). Lectures and laboratory sessions, seminars and tutorials are also utilised. Online teaching and learning is utilised to support module work.
This course will be assessed using a variety of methods which will could vary depending upon the module. Assessment methods include formal examinations, coursework, tests, essays, practical or project work, group work and presentations. The Coventry University Group assessment strategy ensures that our courses are fairly assessed and allows us to monitor student progression towards the achieving the intended learning outcomes.

Actual teaching contact hours will vary depending on the level of study and the requirements of a particular semester. In a typical week your class time will be divided amongst personal tutorials and small group teaching; medium group teaching (e.g. seminars, tutorial sessions, lab sessions and workshops); and large group teaching (lectures).
In addition, you will be expected to undertake significant self-directed study each week, depending on the demands of individual modules. The number of hours of class time will vary from year to year: it’s likely to be around 14 hours contact per week in the first year (around six hours per week per module) dropping to around 10 (around four hours per week per module) in final year as you become a more independent learner.
The university is committed to providing a global educational experience and we encourage you to undertake a placement year or study year abroad after your second year of study. We will endeavour to support you in finding a placement anywhere in the world and in seeking financing for that experience.

EU nationals starting in the 2020/21 academic year remain eligible for the same fees as home students and the same financial support. Financial support comes from Student Finance England, and covers undergraduate and postgraduate study for the duration of their course, providing they meet the residency requirement.
EU nationals starting in the 2020/21 academic year must have resided in the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland for the three years prior to the start of their course. The purpose of that three year residency should not have been mainly for the purpose of receiving full time education.

Recent graduates from our previous Multimedia Computing BSc (Hons) course now work for companies such as Microsoft, Rebellion Games, TopCon, The Royal Opera House and The Royal Academy of Arts.
I am currently working as a Software Engineer for a leading fintech firm based in the London. The course provided me with a high level of practical and theoretical knowledge which kick-started my career, helping me to obtain four internships before graduating.

For UK and EU students, if Parliament permit an increase in tuition fees, we may increase fees for each subsequent year of study in line with any such changes. Following the UK’s exit from the European Union, EU students should be aware that there may be a change to UK laws following the UK’s exit, this may change their student status, their eligibility to study part time, and/or their eligibility for student finance. We will act in accordance with the UK’s laws in force in relation to student tuition fees and finance from time to time.
