Overview

In the global world of business, companies of all sizes are looking to get the edge on their competition. With this course, you could learn the business enterprise and innovation skills needed to help organisations get ahead – or decide to start your own company to challenge them.

Primarily aimed at international students already studying for a degree in business management or a related field, this course can help you to top-up your existing learning, to become a skilled individual able to apply enterprising skills within employment, or forge independent entrepreneurial ventures. The course is also open to those who possess a HND or equivalent from a recognised awarding body.

With a strong practical focus, this course offers you the chance to get hands-on experience in assessing the feasibility of business opportunities, and in managing innovation and change. Delivered by our International Centre for Transformational Entrepreneurship, you will be taught by academic staff with industry experience, through a centre focused on trying to help people see things differently through applied entrepreneurship.

Alongside the course modules, you will have the opportunity to engage with Coventry’s FabLab, who can help turn your entrepreneurial ideas into reality through technology like 3-D printers. You will also have access to start-up support from the Coventry University Social Enterprise team, who are experienced in helping overseas nationals set up businesses in the UK.

  • Access to support, advice and guidance from Coventry University Social Enterprise, who have a track record in helping individuals develop social enterprises and businesses
  • Coventry Business School was ranked as ‘Excellent’ in 2019 by Eduniversal, a ranking of over 150 business schools worldwide
  • Study a module, English Business Presentation Skills, delivered by experts from our Faculty of Arts and Humanities, who can help to hone your verbal communication and pitching skills
  • Upon successful completion, this top-up can open up pathways into the academic study of entrepreneurship, which you can pursue through our MSc International Entrepreneurship.

The key study themes covered by this course are below:

  • Business enterprise skills and mindset – the course aims to develop your enterprising behaviours, attitudes and mindsets by focusing on your personal development as an entrepreneur or intrapreneur. It will also seek to give you the skills to identify, critically assess and exploit new business opportunities.
  • Systematic innovation – the course will give you the opportunity to understand how to move ideas to actions, identify innovative opportunities and capitalise on them. You will also be exposed to contemporary issues in innovation through research enriched learning led by the International Centre for Transformational Entrepreneurship.
  • Transferable skills – you will have the opportunity to develop skills in problem solving, resilience, analytical thinking, and verbal communication.
  • Sustainable business – through the duration of the course, you will have the chance to understand how to create scalable businesses, and to become aware of contemporary issues around sustainability.

Your course will be taught through a combination of formal lectures, seminars, tutorials, self-directed study, and workshops. Coventry Business School’s Progress Coaches will also be available for advice throughout your time on the course.

As the course has a focus on the practical application of taught theories, there is also the opportunity for you to ‘enact’ ideas into action, through creative learning opportunities, which may include guided simulations or the production of a website. Your practical skills will be further developed in the module ‘Enterprise and Innovation Applied Project’, where you will design your own project with the support of a supervisor.

In addition to the contact hours below, we offer the opportunity to attend additional optional sessions, including sessions with the faculty’s progress coaches, or to meet with staff during their advice and feedback hours.

Within each year of study, you will typically have 12 contact hours of teaching a week which includes:

  • Medium group teaching, such as practical classes, seminars or workshops each week
  • Large group teaching, such as lectures each week.

In addition, you will be expected to undertake a significant amount of self-directed studying and revising in your own time each week, which may include, for example, guided study using hand-outs or online activities.

At Coventry Business School we are proud of our international cohort of students, which will allow you to have the opportunity to work in multinational teams during your studies, learn about your fellow students’ cultures and build networks of friends throughout the world, who could even become future contacts as you start your career.

Given the increasingly international nature of business, the majority of modules taught on this course seek to discuss topics from an international perspective. Modules are delivered by teaching staff from our International Centre for Transformational Entrepreneurship (ICTE), many of whom have international backgrounds, while ICTE itself has an international remit and works closely with partners from across the world to share the latest research and best practice in transformational entrepreneurship.
