This course aims to develop the next generation of highly skilled graduate specialist engineers for the UK's high-value manufacturing sector.

  • This Manufacturing Engineering BEng and MEng Integrated Master’s course has been designed and is delivered in collaboration with Unipart Manufacturing Group as part of a £32 million collaborative project.

What you'll study

Your studies will be split between our £50m Engineering and Computing Building and the Institute for Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering (AME), based at Unipart’s Coventry site.

This 'Faculty on the Factory Floor' provides you with the opportunity to experience technology on the manufacturing front line. Our past students have experienced robotic automation, forming, joining, analysis and simulation, metrology and product verification technology.

You will spend time on the Unipart shop floor, engaging with people who make products and the people who manage product lines. Taught modules are applied immediately in a real factory and supplemented by continual live experiences of how things are manufactured in real time.

You will have the opportunity to engage in our ‘live’ projects at the AME with the help and support of Unipart Manufacturing Group. Past students for example have been provided with opportunities to explore the design of a manufacturing area for a heat-exchange pipe or fuel-rail, and consider the impact of automation and robotics on manufacturing efficiency.

Year 1 is focused on materials and manufacturing processes (semester 1), and quality and metrology (semester 2). Within each semester, you should apply your learning and knowledge to a real ‘live’ industrial project related to the theme of the semester. In addition to an industrial project module in each semester, you will have the opportunity to undertake two taught modules which will supplement the project modules.

Modules

  • This module is designed to provide an introduction to engineering materials and manufacturing processes. Common processes will be analysed which are used to convert metallic and polymeric materials into all types of engineering products from a variety of industrial sectors, i.e. aerospace, automotive & general engineering.

  • This module aims to provide the essential and fundamental knowledge of mechanical science and mathematical methods needed by manufacturing engineering students. The science includes the laws and theory underpinning solid mechanics and thermal analysis relevant to manufacturing.

  • This module requires you to work in small groups to design and evaluate the production process for the manufacture of a part or assembly. Within the project, an analysis of the part from an engineering science and materials perspective will be required to determine any impact on manufacturing processes, e.g. cost, reliability.

  • The aim of this module is for you to appreciate the importance of technical quality and metrology and how this is influenced by appropriate management systems.

  • The module aims to provide a broad, basic introduction to electrical science for manufacturing engineers. It covers the essential techniques of electrical circuit analysis and electromagnetic machines.

  • The aim of this module is to develop on module Part-assembly Manufacturing Project through a project of expanded scope. Specifically, the project will look at integrating electrical science, as well as the quality and metrology aspects taught in the same semester.

Year 2 is focused on design and sustainability (semester 1), automation, and robotics (semester 2). Similar to Year 1, you should apply your learning and knowledge from taught modules to real ‘live’ industrial projects related to the theme of each semester.

  • This module is designed to deepen your understanding of the design and behaviour of engineering materials and their interaction and application in the design, manufacture and service of advanced engineering components.

  • The aim of this module is to introduce automation and robotics and to evaluate the roles that these technologies have within modern manufacturing environments. You will examine underpinning mathematical principles that support automation and robotics as well as basic control principles.

  • The aim of this module to integrate the aspects of advanced materials and processes along with automation and robotics. You will critique a manufacturing system for one or more products, particularly around the choice of manufacturing processes and equipment.

  • The aim of this module is to introduce you to industry standard design and manufacture software and the associated hardware used in producing engineering components.

  • The aim of this module is to evaluate the engineering and management implications of a product portfolio at various stages within the product life cycle.

Following your second year, there is an option to apply for a one-year professional work placement or study abroad in a partner institution*.

Past student placements have included roles in Aston Martin Lagonda, Unipart, Babcock International Group, Cummins, GE-Aviation and GKN.

If you wish to undertake the optional study abroad/placement year, you will take either the Placement Year module or the Study Abroad Year module which both typically run for a full academic year between years 2 and 3 of your course. You are normally able to progress onto the relevant module if you have successfully completed the first two years of the course (i.e. having accumulated 240 credits) and have a confirmed opportunity two weeks prior to the start of the academic year. However, we encourage international students to confirm their placements earlier to ensure they are able to meet any applicable visa requirements.

Students opting for either the work placement or study abroad module will be registered on a non-credit bearing module and therefore no additional tuition fees apply. Whilst the modules do not bear credits, they do require completion of marked activities reflecting on your placement/study abroad or work placement experience. Following successful completion of the activities, the module selected will appear on your final academic transcript. Students will thus graduate with 360 credits in total, assuming successful completion of their final year.

During semester 1 of the final year you will have the opportunity to choose one of two pathways: A Lean Operations Management pathway or an Engineering Materials and Manufacturing Technology pathway. For each of these pathways, you will undertake a real ‘live’ industrial project and a taught module related to the pathway theme.

During semester 2, you will be encouraged to undertake a new product development industrial project and complete your individual manufacturing engineering dissertation project, which will have an industrial focus*. Past students have worked with companies such as Unipart Manufacturing Group, Lander Automotive Ltd. and CORE Surgical.

  • This module is concerned with the introduction of a new product or a variant of an existing one into an existing manufacturing environment. You will work in groups and further develop the project management and team-working skills instilled earlier in the course to manage the introduction of a product from concept design into the manufacturing arena.

  • The aim of this module is to formulate a dissertation proposal, demonstrating its context within existing literature. Moreover, you will have to outline and justify a research design and data collection approach that is appropriate to the problem statement and is ethical.

  • The aim of this module is to demonstrate an ability to implement a research proposal, typically with context within industry. The research must address a key question or aim and evaluate the results gathered and the degree to which the research question has been answered.

  • The aim of this module is to provide you with a perspective on global manufacturing and to understand the complexity of modern supply-chains. This module builds on previous modules within the Manufacturing Engineering degree, particularly around sustainability, global practice and product lifecycle.

    The aim of this module is to provide you with the ability to plan and control a competitive manufacturing system. The module develops the skills and techniques required to design improved methods and layouts for a manufacturing system.

    The aim of this module is to build on the integrated knowledge of the previous two years of study whilst integrating the knowledge around advanced concepts around advanced materials and manufacturing processes and technologies in high-variety and high value-add environments.

If you meet the criteria** following your assessments in Year 2, you will be invited to apply to transition onto the Manufacturing Engineering MEng Degree Programme, with an additional year of study. This additional MEng year should enable you to deepen your knowledge and expertise in areas such as manufacturing simulation, sustainability, materials and manufacturing technologies and vision systems/sensor technology. In addition to this, you will have the opportunity to undertake a year-long industrial group project which will focus on a major real, ‘live’ industrial issue that you will provide a solution for.

**The criteria for application to Manufacturing Engineering MEng programme is provided within the MEng/BEng Manufacturing Engineering Programme Specification. Please refer to this and note that such opportunities are subject to competitive application, availability, meeting any applicable visa requirements and additional fees apply.

  • The aim of this module is to provide preparation for you to undertake a substantial Group Project. Successful completion of the module will require methodical planning, record keeping and self-management, effective communication and delivery of report.

  • This module will enable you, working in groups and in conjunction with industry, to produce successful software applications, system processes, components or product designs; incorporating where necessary the most advanced technical and mathematical concepts from both their past knowledge and that acquired during the course.

  • This module focuses on computer-based manufacturing simulation, where the model is implemented as part of a computer program, which can then be executed to compute and record the data which describes the simulated manufacturing system's behaviour.

  • This module presents the ideas and concepts of sustainability and applies them to broader issues facing society through analysis and engineering design. The content will explore the three elements of: environment, society and economy, which form the basis of sustainability.

  • The aim of this module is to investigate the introduction and use of leading edge technologies, methods and materials currently used in advanced and high value manufacturing environments.

  • This module will introduce the fundamentals of image processing. This will then lead to two dimensional (2D) machine vision techniques and methodologies for object detection, pose estimation, inspection and measurement. This will be followed by an overview of a range of three dimensional (3D) machine vision systems that can be employed in industry.

How you'll learn

Actual teaching contact hours will vary depending on the level of study and the requirements of a particular semester. In a typical week your contact hours will be divided amongst:

  • Personal tutorials
  • Medium group teaching in tutorial sessions
  • Lab sessions and workshops
  • Large group teaching
  • Lectures

In addition, you will be expected to undertake significant self-directed study, approximately 16-20 hours each week, depending on the demands of individual modules.

The number of contact hours may vary from semester to semester, however, on average, studying the 3-year Manufacturing Engineering BEng degree programme and for the first 3 years of the Manufacturing Engineering MEng degree programme, it is likely to be around 23 contact hours per week in the first year, around 20 contact hours in the second year, and around 19 hours in the final (third for MEng) year.

In the fourth year of the Manufacturing Engineering MEng degree programme, you will have around 15 contact hours per week, as you should become a more independent learner.


Assessment

Throughout your 3-Year Manufacturing Engineering BEng or 4-Year Manufacturing Engineering MEng degree programme, you will be assessed using a variety of methods which will vary depending upon the module. Assessment methods may include coursework, tests, essays, formal examinations, group work, practical or project work and presentations/posters.

The Coventry University Group assessment strategy ensures that our courses are fairly assessed and allows us to monitor student progression towards the achieving the intended learning outcomes.

  • Research and investigate problems individually, generating and justifying approach, analysis, solution and final recommendation to a practical engineering problem.

International experience opportunities

The university is committed to providing a global educational experience and we aim to provide opportunities to participate in a number of collaborative projects*. Past first-year students visited the Warsaw University of Technology in Poland to undertake workshop and computer aided manufacturing skills in an overseas environment. Other past students have taken part in a collaborative project, developing universal healthcare solutions working with the university’s Occupational Therapy students alongside six other institutions from around Europe, participating in international innovation and creativity programmes in Ruse, Bulgaria and Hasselt, Belgium.

We organise a range of overseas field trips*, which have previously included: test work at the GM proving ground; a tour of the Ford F150 factory in Detroit, USA; a tour of Hirata, a Japanese Tier 1 automotive supplier for Ford, Chrysler and GM; participation on a certificated training course with Altair on Inspire; and visits to Mahle Powertrain, the University of Michigan and Chrysler Building.

Participate in technical work in a hands-on way. The workshop includes lathes, milling machines, fabrication equipment for sheet metal work, CNC machines, work benches, welding lines and a fitting assembly area.
