Overview

Did you know that the Airbus A380, Boeing Dreamliner and Eurofighter Typhoon each had key mechanical and electrical systems designed and developed here in this country? The UK is also one of few countries in the world with the resources to design and manufacture aircrafts and advanced helicopters.

The BEng (Hons) Aerospace Systems Engineering programme has run successfully for a number of years and is accredited by the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS). The BEng and MEng programmes are designed to provide you the opportunity to learn the vital skills required to join the teams of aerospace systems engineers designing and developing systems for the next generation of aircraft.

The aerospace industry provides one of the most challenging environments for the development and testing of new technologies. Offering a range of exciting careers, there is a growing demand for aerospace engineers with a systems focus and who are able to embrace the multidisciplinary aspects of problem solving to help design the next generation of aircraft systems.

We aim to develop a thorough, integrated understanding of mechanical, electrical and systems engineering and how this knowledge is applied in the aerospace industry. You will develop in-depth detailed design skills with hands-on access to our remarkable equipment, which includes a Harrier Jump Jet, flight simulation suite and the Mercedes Petronas Wind Tunnel as well as industry standard software. The course has achieved high levels of student satisfaction – at least 90% overall satisfaction in the National Student Survey (NSS) every year since 2015/16.

Our simulators create an exciting way to learn, with 61 channels of flight data which can be analysed to assess the accuracy of a students’ own design. The simulators are incorporated into an air traffic control environment.

Overview

The first year aims to build on your established skills to provide a foundation of key engineering subjects and an essential grounding in the key aeronautical principles. You will be provided with an introduction to aerospace topics including aerodynamics, power plants, aircraft systems and structures.

This is reinforced with the use of practical laboratory sessions using our full-sized aircraft, wind tunnel and flight simulator hardware. For example, you will have the opportunity to remove, inspect, overhaul and reinstate critical aircraft components like the aircraft braking system, aileron or rudder. You will also have the chance to perform a series of aircraft manoeuvres in the Merlin flight simulator to collect data to analyse the flying characteristic of the aircraft and design, develop and manufacture crashworthy landing gears for quadcopter using 3D printers.

Overview

Following your second year, there is an option to apply for a one-year professional work placement or study abroad in a partner institution (subject to additional costs, competitive application, meeting applicable visa requirements and availability).

Past students have undertaken placements working for Aero Engine Controls, GE Aviation, UTC Actuation Systems, HS Marston, Rolls-Royce, Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Airbus Bertrandt, Meggitt, Tata Technologies, Jaguar Land Rover, Nissan, JCB, BMW, Morgan Materials, GKN Aerospace and Arrowsmith.

Overview

The final year of the BEng programme covers propulsion systems design, supersonic aerodynamics, your individual project and a variety of group design work. In this group work, you will have the chance to compete as part of a team to produce a demanding system design, which has previously included the design of an aircraft landing system and the design then construction of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) or drone. In 2019, the Coventry University aircraft was best UK entrant in the BFMA heavy lift challenge.

The course culminates with your individual research project. Past students have examined flight data analysis for Red Bull Air Racing, aerodynamic noise reduction of van roof racks, diesel engine duty cycle optimisation and heat exchanger optimisation for local companies. Other projects include real-time control of Segway type rig, winglet design and testing.

MEng students will study this same programme but are streamed in their group projects (Aerospace Systems Design and Aerospace System Prototype and Validation) to ensure that their built aircraft provides the platform for the systems integration module of their final MEng year.

At Master’s level, the course is designed to deepen your knowledge and understanding of core aerospace subjects (system integration, propulsion system design, structural design and materials) and strategic management to enable you to solve multidisciplinary problems of increasing complexity.

The MEng year is an optional additional year, and students can chose to exit with a BEng (Hons) degree after three years, or if they meet the entry criteria for the MEng year they may continue (details of criteria are provided for in the programme specification on this course webpage).

Your main study themes are:

  • Aerodynamics and aircraft systems: A broad introduction to each of the main aeronautical engineering disciplines. Covering the essentials of aerodynamics, aircraft systems and powerplants, you will have the opportunity to develop the skills to plan, perform, record, analyse and evaluate experimentation within an aerospace environment. Legal issues of relevance to the aerospace industry are also covered.
  • Engineering mathematics: Aims to develop your competence in mathematical methods relevant to engineering. You will have the opportunity to learn to analyse problems using appropriate mathematical techniques carrying out the manipulation themselves and also using modern mathematical software.
  • Avionic systems: Presents the concepts of signal acquisition and processing required as part of the study of avionic systems. It covers radio and data communication, electromagnetic propagation, radar, navigation and digital signal processing as applied in aircraft systems.
  • Flight dynamics, control and modelling: Introduces you to control theory, the aircraft's vehicle dynamics and investigates the concepts of aircraft stability.
  • Mechanics and Thermodynamics: Aims to broaden knowledge and understanding of rigid body mechanics, stress analysis and thermofluids. You will have the chance to learn to correctly apply solid mechanics and thermofluids theory to design problems by means of practical examples.
  • Propulsion System Design: Develop detailed understanding of engine thermodynamics and the operation of engine ancillary systems such as fuel systems, heat exchangers.
  • Aircraft Design and System Verification/Validation: An opportunity to apply what you have learnt, working together as a team to design, develop and test an aircraft from first principles using the university facilities.

The BEng course can be studied full-time over three years and part-time over six years. Intake is usually October, but we do offer a January start as well.

Your course will be based on a series of lectures, with associated seminars and practical workshop classes. We incorporate a wide range of learning and teaching methods as part of our innovative activity-led learning.

We encourage you to learn through stimulating activity, such as a project, problem, scenario, case study or enquiry in a classroom, laboratory or work setting. This has been proven to engage students and creates challenge, relevance, integration, professional awareness and variety to help you learn technical, personal and professional skills. When considering avionic systems, for example, we study a number of real-life case studies, including the design and development of hands-on Arduino based projects for aircraft data logging and control.

We aim to present aerospace systems engineering knowledge in an integrated way to reflect the multiplicity and interaction between many types of scientific, commercial, manufacturing and managerial skills and knowledge, necessary to produce a successful engineering product or system

You will have the opportunity to work with staff on real-world problems from industry, commerce and research groups, as you would in professional practice; this means that you can develop all of the professional skills at the same time as you learn the technical content of your degree. For example, in the past, students have tackled the design, development, manufacture and testing of small scale aircraft to compete in the British Model Flying Association (BFMA) flying competition and the integration of avionic equipment within it.

This course will be assessed using a variety of methods which will could vary depending upon the module. Assessment methods include formal examinations, coursework, tests, essays, practical or project work, group work and presentations.

The Coventry University Group assessment strategy ensures that our courses are fairly assessed and allows us to monitor student progression towards the achieving the intended learning outcomes. Assessments may include exams, individual assignments or group work elements.

On successful completion, you will have knowledge of:

  • The function, analysis and design of aerospace systems (adopting a necessary multidisciplinary systems approach to the aerospace study).
  • The key principles of mechanical science, electrical science and engineering mathematics and their application in analysing the performance of engineering products.
  • Aspects of the design process, aerospace design standards, selection of materials and manufacturing processes.
  • The international operation of the aerospace industry.
  • The function of engineering management (including social, economic, ethical, global and environmental concerns).


On successful completion, you will be able to:

  • Solve engineering problems using appropriate engineering science and mathematical techniques.

In a typical week you will have around 18 ‘contact’ hours of teaching. This generally includes:

  • Small group teaching: 1-2 hours of practical laboratory, personal tutorial, individual project supervision each week.
  • Medium group teaching: 5-7 hours of laboratory, workshops, tutorials or seminars each week.
  • Large group teaching: 8-12 hours of lectures each week.

The university is committed to providing a global educational experience and we encourage you to undertake a placement year or study year abroad after your second year of study. We will endeavour to support you in finding a placement anywhere in the world and in seeking financing for that experience.

The majority of work placements are within the UK, but previous students have been placed in GKN Aerospace (Munich, Germany), Bertrandt (Hamburg, Germany) and Airbus (Toulouse, France). The majority of study abroad student have studied at high education institutions within Europe, including Aerospace Engineering at UPM, Spain.

A Level BTEC IB Diploma GCSE requirement
ABB-BBB to include Mathematics and one from Engineering, Physics, or Design Technology. Excludes General Studies D*DD-DDM in an Engineering subject, to include Merits in 'Calculus to Solve Engineering Problems' and 'Further Engineering Mathematics' units 31 points to include either Physics, Design Technology, IT or Mathematics at Higher level 5 GCSEs at grade 4 / C or above to include English and Mathematics.

A-Levels

A-Level applicants are required to have three. A2 Levels. Coventry University may include AS grades within an offer for certain courses, but we are not able to accept two AS Levels in place of one A2 Level. In some courses it may be necessary for entrants to have passed specific A2 Levels in nominated subjects. Please see the course pages for more information.

Access Diplomas

The Access to HE Diploma to include 30 Level 3 credits at Distinction and 15 Level 3 credits at Merit all to be in Mathematics or Physical Science units. Plus GCSE English and Mathematics at grade 4 / C or above.

Coventry University welcomes applicants who have completed, or who are studying, the Access to HE Diploma developed by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA). Successful completion of the course will require you to gain 60 credits with at least 45 to be achieved at Level 3 (with the remainder at Level 2). In some cases we will require you to have gained Merit or Distinction grades in a number of units or in nominated subjects. BTEC Level 3 Diplomas

The University will accept the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma for entry to most courses. In some cases we will require applicants to have studied either certain named modules or a specific named Diploma. The appropriate course page will have full information on the entry requirements. The University also accepts the BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma and BTEC Level 3 Diploma for entry to degree programmes, provided that they are studied in combination with other qualifications that provide a total volume of study that is equivalent to three A2 Levels. For example, you could be studying a BTEC Level 3 Diploma plus an A2 Level, or a BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma plus two A2 Levels. Where a specific A2 or BTEC subject is required for entry then you must be offering this as part of your combination of qualifications.

EU nationals starting in the 2020/21 academic year must have resided in the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland for the three years prior to the start of their course. The purpose of that three year residency should not have been mainly for the purpose of receiving full time education.

Graduate Immigration Route visa

Based on current information from the UK Government, international students whose study extends beyond summer 2021 may be eligible for a visa under the UK Government’s Graduate Immigration Route, which will enable students to stay and work, or look for work, in the UK at any skill level for up to two (2) years. Check the most up to date guidance available to check your eligibility and any updates from the UK Government before making an application or enrolment decision.

The UK aerospace industry is the largest in Europe and second only to USA (according to ADS Aerospace Facts & Figures). The industry had turnover of £31 billion in 2016 and includes BAE Systems, GKN and Rolls-Royce, and a range of international companies with operations in the UK, such as Airbus, Cobham, AgustaWestland, Finmeccanica, Thales, Boeing and Bombardier.

This course aims to produce graduates with the skills to become successful system-design engineers and engineering managers, both in aerospace and the wider engineering context, in fields such as aircraft and components design and manufacture, maintenance and testing, propulsion systems, flight simulation, aviation, avionics, patent engineering, financial services and many more.

Previous graduates have obtained jobs in the military as pilots and engineers, as systems design engineers for Marshalls of Cambridge and Rolls Royce in Derby, and engineers in various aspects of the aerospace industry, with companies such as Meggitt, Goodrich, Moog and HS Marstons.
