Overview

In today’s data-driven world, more and more companies are realising the powerful insight which can be gleaned from analysing all available data and the competitive advantage this can create.

This course responds to the growing demand and significant shortage of highly-trained analysts capable of interpreting data to find new patterns and relationships, informing business decisions accordingly. You will have the opportunity to learn to generate value from large data sets, which cannot be analysed using traditional techniques.

Coventry Business School was rated ‘excellent’ by Eduniversal in 2018, a ranking of business schools in over 150 countries. Our impressive global network is vast and varied. Through guest speakers, industry visits, case studies and internship opportunities, we aim to use these links to share their real-world business experiences and bring you up-to-speed with the issues and challenges facing modern businesses (opportunities are subject to availability, meeting applicable visa requirements, and fees may apply).

Course information

The course has been specifically designed to give a structured understanding of business analytics and the practical tools which can drive business advantage. You’ll have the opportunity to learn how to analyse business data and solve business problems analytically.

We start by providing an overview of big data and business analytics and its context in a business environment where data is rapidly becoming one of the most valuable assets. We will introduce you to the historical context and growth of big data, as well as the characteristics defining big data. We also encourage you to consider the social, ethical and legal implications of handling, storing and using all manner of datasets.

We then focus on the underpinning analytical techniques and tools used to analyse and interpret data, forecast future trends, automate and streamline decisions and optimise courses of action. This includes statistical analysis, data mining, forecasting and regression, optimisation, simulation and spreadsheet modelling. You should also gain a deeper understanding of the value and benefits of different analytical techniques for advanced decision-making and how they can be used to identify patterns, relationships, associations, factors and clusters.

Finally, we consider how to apply analytical methods and techniques to specific business functions, such as an organisation’s marketing function, value chain and financial planning. For example, we will consider how to assess financial performance and economic conditions of a business, identifying relevant costs for short-term and long-term decision-making.

You will be introduced to the key concepts of managerial accounting, alongside practical tools for assessing the financial performance and economic condition of a business. • Operations analytics: To take advantage of potentially useful digital information and advanced data collecting technologies, firms are changing the way in which they make business decisions, plan and control their operations. We will consider areas of operations management where analytics may add considerable value, focusing on how data can be used to match supply and demand in various business and operational settings. You will learn various predictive analytic techniques and develop quantitative skills in operational areas of business, including demand planning, inventory management and logistics management.
  • Global Supply Chain and Logistics:  This can enhance your understanding of supply chain networks and the importance of supply chain management. Current logistical trends such as lean management of the logistics and supply chain function will also be analysed.
