The course can be studied full-time over two years or part-time over three years, starting in September. All modules within the course are mandatory and you have the option to extend your studies by taking a sandwich year on placement or studying abroad.
Teaching incorporates a range of learning methods, from lectures, seminars and tutorials to laboratories, workshops and studio sessions. We also make use of online learning technology to allow you to interact online in discussions and to carry out online tests to assess your progress. In addition, your personal tutor will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for advice.
You will have access to the latest versions of CAD software, including 2D, 3D and visualisation software, BIM software, and building performance analysis programmes, together with products you may already be familiar with, such as SketchUp. Supported by staff who have had a wide range of design experience in the application of these processes in industry, you will also use portable monitoring equipment, such as thermal imaging cameras, to undertake building performance assessments.
A number of our modules adopt an activity-led learning approach; for example, the group project in the final year is a platform where we practise the delivery of building information modelling and incorporate team work to solve a specific design problem. Many of our academics are research active, managing large research projects funded by the European Union and Engineering, Innovate UK and Physical Science Research Unit, which they bring to the classroom as case study resources for coursework and dissertation projects.
We try to incorporate current practitioner input wherever possible; previous students have had the opportunity to hear from guest lecturers to bridge the gap between theory and practice, design of electrical and mechanical systems as well as contractual issues in construction projects. We also try to organise industry visits, such as a construction site or design office. Previously, students have been given an in-depth tour of the University’s BREEAM excellent buildings both during construction and upon completion.
