Postgraduate Certificate in Leadership and Strategic Management

Postgraduate Certificate in Leadership and Strategic Management

For several years, Coventry University has worked in partnership with a major company headquartered in the West Midlands to design and deliver a Postgraduate Certificate in Leadership and Strategic Management to cohorts of managers from across the organisation.

The company approached Coventry University after recognising a need to identify and develop its strongest middle managers in order to produce its next generation of senior leaders. This would allow the company to attract and retain future leadership talent for its UK and European businesses. The programme was designed with input from learning and development leaders within the company to ensure an appropriate balance of academic theories and concepts, and the practical application of these to the business.

To provide external recognition, and in response to client needs, the University developed a Postgraduate Certificate programme, and secured accreditation from the Chartered Management Institute (CMI). This meant that in addition to a Coventry University qualification, delegates also achieved a CMI Level 7 award in Leadership and Strategic Management and became members of the CMI.

Course details:

Coventry University worked in partnership with the client to design a programme consisting of three modules:

  • Strategic management
  • Leadership
  • People management

Learning Methods

Each module is delivered in an intensive three-day block on the Coventry University campus. Modules have been designed with input from learning and development leaders within the client organisation to ensure an appropriate balance of academic theories and concepts, and the opportunity to apply these to the client’s business areas, as well as to the roles of delegates.

Benefits:

The programme and its benefits have become deeply embedded within the client organisation, as evidenced by the fact that three cohorts of twelve delegates each have gone through it over a period of five years. Through the programme, delegates have gained a broader understanding of the business in terms of culture and strategic priorities. In addition, intensive block delivery has allowed cohorts of future senior leaders to network and form strong working relationships with each other.

Moreover, while completing the programme delegates have completed work-based projects, delivering demonstrable benefits to the business, for example in the form of cost efficiencies.

The success of the programme for individual delegates is clear through the fact that everyone who has been through it has subsequently achieved promotion.

Duration

9 months (part-time)

Leadership Academy programme

Coventry University worked in partnership with a leading financial services company to design a Leadership Academy programme. This programme aimed to address the need identified by the client to develop the personal and management capabilities of delegates.

While the University sought to give delegates exposure to relevant academic theories of leadership and managers, the focus of delivery was extremely practical. Delegates were encouraged to use relevant theoretical ideas to reflect on their roles and development. This was facilitated through a series of activities and formative assessments.

The programme was delivered both at Coventry University and at client sites, involving staff from both. Delivered over a period of 18 months, the content of the programme was mapped to the business needs of the client.

Course details:

Key topics of this course:

  • Leadership
  • Team working
  • Business skills
  • Finance
  • Change
  • Consultancy
  • Emotional intelligence
  • Human Resources
  • International markets
  • Cyber security

Benefits:

Delegates have fed back that the programme has helped them to clarify some of the challenges that they face in their roles and how these can be addressed, as well as giving them a deeper and richer understanding of the management and leadership tools that they can draw on in their roles. Several delegates intend to seek promotion, and completion of the programme should help them to achieve this.

Duration

18 months (part-time)
