Postgraduate Certificate in Leadership and Strategic Management
For several years, Coventry University has worked in partnership with a major company headquartered in the West Midlands to design and deliver a Postgraduate Certificate in Leadership and Strategic Management to cohorts of managers from across the organisation.The company approached Coventry University because it identified a need to identify and develop its strongest middle managers in order to produce its next generation of senior leaders. This would allow it to attract and retain future leadership talent for its UK and European businesses. The programme was designed with input from learning and development leaders within the organisation to ensure an appropriate balance of academic theories and concepts, and the practical application of these to their business.
To provide external recognition, and in response to client needs, we developed a postgraduate certificate programme, and secured accreditation from the Chartered Management Institute (CMI). This meant that in addition to a Coventry University qualification, delegates also achieved a CMI Level 7 award in Leadership and Strategic Management and became members of the CMI.
Coventry University worked in partnership with the client to design a programme that consister of three modules.
- strategic management
- people management.
Each module is delivered in an intensive three-day block on the Coventry University campus. Modules have been designed with input from learning and development leaders within Sims to ensure an appropriate balance of academic theories and concepts, and the opportunity to apply these to business areas within the client organisation, as well as the roles of delegates.
The programme and its benefits have become deeply embedded within the client, as evidenced by the fact that three cohorts of twelve delegates each have gone through it over a period of five years. Through the programme, delegates have gained a broader understanding of the business in terms of culture and strategic priorities. In addition, intensive block delivery has allowed cohorts of future senior leaders to network and form strong working relationships with each other.
Moreover, while completing the programme they have completed work-based projects that have delivered demonstrable benefits to the business, for example in the form of cost efficiencies. The success of the programme for individual delegates is clear through the fact that everyone who has been through it has subsequently achieved promotion.
