Why you should study this course

Coventry University’s Business Administration course aims to reflect business thought and practice with an emphasis, where appropriate, on the application of theory to real business situations, challenges, and issues.

If you choose to study this course, you’ll have the opportunity to:

  • study case studies designed to help develop an in-depth understanding of how the different parts of an organisation support one another. For example, past students have considered the project management issues involved with festivals such as Glastonbury, the ethical concerns in the supply chains of cut flowers and the challenges of managing mega-events, such as the Olympic Games
  • learn the skills needed to venture into a potential career in local, national or international markets
  • learn in a study environment that aims to encourage and provide students with the opportunity to go beyond an understanding of management theories and to be able to apply them confidently to real life situations

Past students have been attracted by the flexibility of the course, which aims to provide an excellent grounding in the key areas of business, such as finance, human resource management, strategy, project management and marketing, but allows you to specialise as you progress depending on your interests and potential future career aspirations, with final year optional modules covering topics as varied as advanced accounting, marketing psychology and globalisation.

Our strong focus is on supporting you in identifying work experience opportunities* with the Talent Team, our careers and employability team, who could help you to gain the skills, knowledge and networks that may be beneficial to you as you explore potential future career options after graduation.

What you'll study

The first year of the Business Administration course acts as an introduction to business and will provide a basic understanding of key areas. You will study core modules designed to provide you with a solid overview of how businesses work and key business functions, such as marketing, managing teams, and analysing business performance.

  • You will also be able to take an Add+vantage module which can allow you to develop your CV by taking credits in an area of study that doesn’t have to be related to your degree. The assessment type will depend on the type of Add+vantage module you wish to take.

    Compulsory

In your second year of study, you will get the opportunity to delve into subjects in more detail, gaining a further understanding of business strategy and managing people. You will be able to select one optional module, which will allow you to explore either leadership or business accounting. Year two also includes a module dedicated to entrepreneurship, which may help you to learn the skills needed to set up your own business or display entrepreneurial traits in future roles.

After the second year, you have the option of applying for a work placement year or spending 12 months studying abroad** to broaden your international perspective.

The Talent Team, Coventry University’s employability team, can provide you with a wide range of support services to help you apply for a placement opportunity**, including mock interviews and CV writing workshops.

Students can choose to go on an optional work placement or study abroad year** and if selected, they will be registered onto a module which runs for a full academic year between years two and three. Students must have a confirmed placement or study abroad opportunity two weeks prior to the start of the academic year to participate in the study abroad/placement year, however we encourage international students to confirm their placements earlier to ensure they are able to meet any applicable visa requirements. Students can only progress onto the relevant work placement or study abroad module if they successfully complete the first two years of the course (i.e. having accumulated 240 credits).

Students opting for either the work placement or study abroad module will be registered on a non-credit bearing module and therefore no additional tuition fees apply. While the modules do not bear credits, they do require completion of a marked assessment reflecting on your placement/study abroad or work placement experience. Following successful completion of this assessment, the module selected will appear on your final academic transcript. Students will thus graduate with 360 credits in total, assuming successful completion of their final year.

In your final year, you will select two optional modules to allow you to tailor the course to your interests and the subjects most relevant to your potential future career aspirations. Whether you plan to focus on the financial elements of business, business in a global context, or understanding and managing change, you can select the modules best suited to your career aspirations.

You will also study the Business Project module, which will see you undertake a project that is applied in nature, designed to allow you to explore a specific question affecting an organisation, before proposing potential solutions.
