What you'll study

This course blends engineering, design, sustainability, and business to tackle global challenges. Master core engineering principles, sustainable design tools (CAD/CAE), and circular economy strategies while applying the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Hands-on projects, renewable energy systems, and lifecycle analysis should help you prepare for careers in green innovation.

As part of the MEng route, you will advanced your skills and knowledge in sustainability and CAD design. Industry collaborations and modern labs aim to help you make an impact in the real world.

Work placements usually occur between your second and final year of study. They’re a great way to help you explore your potential career path and gain valuable work experience, whilst developing transferable skills for the future.

How you'll learn

Throughout this course, practical experience is central, and as such, you’ll use industry-standard tools like CAD and FEA software, carry out experiments, work on individual and group projects, and apply systems and lifecycle thinking to real engineering problems.  

Teaching and learning methods may include:

Teaching contact hours

As a full-time undergraduate student, you will study modules totalling 120 credits each academic year. You will normally study one 30-credit module at a time. A typical 30-credit module requires a total of 300 hours of study made up of teaching contact hours, guided and independent study.

Teaching hours

Teaching hours may vary depending on your year of study and selected modules. During your first year, you can expect 12-15 teaching hours each week. You will also have the option to attend additional sessions, including time with a progress coach or to meet with staff for advice and feedback. As you progress through your studies, teaching hours may reduce.

Guided and independent study

Throughout your studies, you will be expected to spend time in guided and independent study to make up the required study hours per module. You'll be digging deeper into topics, review what you've learned and complete assignments. This can be completed around your personal commitments. As you progress through your studies, you'll spend more time in independent study.

Online learning

As an innovative university, we use different teaching methods including online tools and emerging technologies. So, some of your teaching hours and assessments may be delivered online.

If you choose to study this course with a professional placement2 or study abroad year, you will need to pay a tuition fee3 to cover your academic support throughout your placement year. Students commencing their professional placement in the academic year 2027/28 will pay £1,500 if they are paying UK fees, or £1,800 if they are paying international fees.

The University will charge the tuition fees that are stated in the above table for the first Academic Year of study. The University will review tuition fees each year. **EU Support Bursary

Following the UK's exit from the European Union, we are offering financial support to all eligible EU students who wish to study an undergraduate or a postgraduate degree with us full-time. This bursary will be used to offset the cost of your tuition fees to bring them in line with that of UK students. Students studying a degree with a foundation year with us are not eligible for the bursary.


Facilities

The engineering and computing buildings house an impressive range of industry standard laboratories, workshop and computing softwaret.4 Home to renewable energy laboratory, VR Power Wall, Composite Materials Laboratory, Rapid prototyping facility including 3D metal and Composite Material Printers, Full motion 6 DOF Flight and  vehicle simulators, wind tunnels, the High Performance Engineering Centre (HPEC) also houses a fleet of CNC manufacturing machines including 5-Axis Milling Machine, and an Electrical Discharge Machine (EDM) 

Power Wall 

You can immerse themselves in your designs and collaborative projects with our floor-to-ceiling high-definition screen featuring 3D immersive technology. This innovative visualisation tool allows you to interrogate your designs from every angle, enabling a deeper understanding of form, function, and performance. By viewing and interacting with their models in full scale, you can identify potential design flaws, test concepts, and refine your ideas with greater precision and confidence. This interactive experience enhances project collaboration and supports innovative problem-solving in real time. 

Renewable Energy and Thermofluids Laboratory 

The Renewable Energy and Thermofluids Laboratory is equipped with technology to support hands-on learning and research in sustainable energy and fluid dynamics. The facility features advanced systems for studying wind turbines, solar thermal, solar photovoltaic (PV), and geothermal energy, alongside ThermoFluid equipment. This laboratory provides you with practical experience in renewable energy technologies, helping you to explore energy efficiency, system integration, and the principles of heat and fluid flow in real-world applications.

Rapid-Prototyping Facility 

You can expect to gain a comprehensive understanding of rapid prototyping techniques and their practical applications. The facility is equipped with laser cutting, additive manufacturing (Metal, PLA, nylon, and composite materials), as well as desktop milling technologies. Through hands-on experience, you develop essential skills in prototyping, fabrication, and design iteration, enabling you to bring concepts to life with speed and precision. 

Composite Materials Laboratory 

This lab provides you with hands-on experience in fabricating and evaluating various composite materials, including carbon fibre-reinforced plastics, glass fibre composites, and carbon fibre-reinforced composites. By experimenting with different materials and processes, you can explore sustainable composite options, including bio-based resins and recycled fibres, fostering innovation in eco-friendly materials.

Graduates of the Sustainable Design Engineering BEng/MEng should have highly sought-after skills for a broad range of roles. They should aim to graduate with strong core engineering skills opening doors in the fast-growing green economy.
