Course information
Health and Social Care is a substantial and growing service sector, with new government investments giving it a higher profile than ever. Rapid changes within the industry mean that there is likely to be demand for well-trained and multi-skilled individuals.
The aim of this course is to equip you with the personal and professional skills to enable you to think creatively about the delivery of existing health care services and to respond to future demands. You will address the unique challenges and complexities facing managers and leaders in health and social care organisations.
This pathway includes two healthcare management specialist modules and your project will also be in this field. There will be no reference to healthcare management on your degree certificate, however your transcript will show all the modules you have studied and the grades you received.
The course consists of three distinct but interconnected stages:
- The Certificate phase will develop a resource-based view of the business enterprise and examine how value is created, including the impact of the wider business environment on the enterprise’s value creation activities.
- In the Diploma stage the focus shifts to considering the manager’s role in the development of an enterprise in response to the internal and external context, to create sustainable value.
- The Masters phase of the programme will focus more specifically on the healthcare sector and /or healthcare management roles. The emphasis will be on exploring, critically evaluating and applying a range of sector specific models and concepts within a healthcare setting.
The course will also support you in clarifying and developing your career goals and will encourage reflection on how those goals might be met.

In more detail...
The MBA for the Healthcare Sector is delivered as a collaboration between the Coventry Business School and the School of Nursing Midwifery and Health, drawing on subject expertise from both faculties. You will be taught by highly qualified academics from a variety of backgrounds and with considerable practical experience in industry, including healthcare, law, accounting, business and commerce.
One of the key aims of the programme is to provide you with the experience from real-life organisations. You will be exposed to real-life case studies and simulations, learning from engaging guest speakers from the industry who will share their expertise and experiences of developing strategies, managing change and growth in their organisations, bringing both contemporary and theoretical aspects to life.
As healthcare becomes a focus for government initiatives and investments all over the world, this pathway is designed to give you the opportunity to learn how to apply quality improvement theories and techniques to health and social care services in differing cultures and contexts.
You will have the opportunity to gain knowledge on the theories of leadership and understand how to apply them in a health and social care setting.
You should gain the ability to critically analyse the shifting relationships between professional identity, managerial essentials and social entrepreneurship in your own practice.
You will have the opportunity to develop a broad and holistic view of the way businesses operate and the impact of the external environment. You will look at an organisation from a different perspective: the organisation as a learning entity made up of individuals, as a combination of inter-related processes focused on adding value, and as a financial entity focused on creating monetary returns. You will focus on exploring the role of the manager as a strategic leader and the role managers play in organisations to transform and adapt to environment changes. As part of this course, you will be required to create innovative approaches and solutions to work-based problems, which should help you develop the ability to be entrepreneurial in your professional practice.
The course is primarily designed to be studied part-time by students currently in employment.
For each module, we will provide engaging video lectures and a variety of interactive content and activities. The online contact between lecturers and colleagues aims to help you stay motivated and committed to learning.
Each module runs with 15 credits across an academic semester of 13 weeks, requiring an estimated 10-15 hours of study time per week, with the flexibility for students to study from one to two modules per academic semester.
The underlying focus is on developing your ability to think critically and strategically and to enable you to develop solutions to complex problems within an ever changing and ambiguous business environment. You can benefit from the innovative and interactive content and activities provided on our online platform FutureLearn. This opens up opportunities to participate in projects with students from around the world. The online contact between you, your lecturers and fellow students will help you stay motivated and committed to learning.
Mixed assessment modes offer students a range of opportunities to demonstrate their achievement of learning outcomes. You will be assessed through a combination of coursework assessments, business plans and activities, all completed online.
As part of the degree, you will initiate and lead a change project within a practice setting. In order to do this successfully you will be required to apply the knowledge drawn from across the course and to demonstrate the strategic thought and leadership capabilities which are core to the course.
On successful completion of this course you should be able to:
- Demonstrate an appreciation of the social and environmental impact of an enterprise and the need to develop ethical and responsible management practices.
- Act in a culturally sensitive manner towards all of an enterprise's stakeholders through having an understanding of the interconnected global nature of the business.
- Demonstrate reflective practice for the development and achievement of personal career goals.
- Critically assess the basis of an enterprise’s value creating activities and the impact of the external environment on value creation.
- Critically assess the manager’s role in ensuring that an enterprise creates sustainable value in the context of dynamic internal and external environments.
- Demonstrate the ability to think strategically and explore potential solutions to complex and ambiguous problems.
- Explore, critically evaluate and apply a range of sector/role specific models and concepts within a practice setting.
- Formulate potential solutions to complex and ambiguous problems while acknowledging the risks and evaluating potential outcomes.

Each 15 credit module will consist of 150 hours of activities. The activity time will be made up of a mixture of guided and self-guided study. You will have access to an experienced team of tutors and lecturers who will support your studies. Each module will have dedicated online tutorials to support your learning.
