Overview

Financial markets are becoming ever more innovative and dynamic, with the growth of financial technology, or Fintech, helping to accelerate that change. Studying this course should help prepare you for a career in Fintech, or provide you with the knowledge needed to operate effectively in other financial sectors being disrupted by technology.

With a focus on the practical application of theory, this course seeks to develop the skills needed by the modern finance graduate, offering a grounding in financial theories coupled with developing the digital fluency needed to apply them to the rapidly changing finance sector. So, alongside developing and expanding your knowledge in key theories such as asset pricing or corporate governance, the course also focuses on financial technology, big data analytics, and the management of risk in digital environments.

During the course, you’ll have the opportunity to get hands-on training in programming using Python and/or R, big data analytics and data mining, as well as having access to Coventry Business School’s Trading Floor (subject to availability), which utilises market leading databases such as Thomson Reuters Eikon, Bloomberg and Fitch Connect. You’ll also be taught by academics with industry experience, alongside those with research expertise in the world of finance, and have the opportunity to extend your course with professional experience.

Professional experience option

This master's programme provides you with the additional option to apply for a professional experience opportunity during your first semester with us. The professional experience opportunity is designed to further develop your skills and knowledge with the aim of maximising your employability prospects.

Please note that the optional professional experience modules incur an additional tuition fee, which for 1 semester of professional experience is £1,333.33, for 2 semesters of professional experience is £2,666.67, and for 3 semesters of professional experience is £4,000.

The course currently includes the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) accredited module, Global Professional Development - Consultancy. Students who successfully complete the CMI module and meet the CMI evidence requirements can also gain a Level 7 Certificate in Strategic Leadership and Management and a Level 7 Award in Professional Consulting. This can enable you to apply for Chartered Manager status via the qualified route, once all CMI entry criteria have been met (please visit the CMI website for full details on the criteria to qualify as a Chartered Manager and applicable fees).

Course information

The MSc FinTech is designed to prepare graduates for exciting potential future careers, in sectors such as investment banking, financial services, and financial technology. It aims to provide a solid grounding in key areas of financial theory, such as derivatives, corporate finance and quantitative methods, before focusing more directly on financial technology, offering an overview to the rapidly growing sector, as well as how to manage risk within it, and how it can be applied in a practical sense to financial firms and their activities.

The course also offers the chance to undertake a practical module on data analytics, Data Analytics using Python/R, which is designed to prepare you for the increasing importance of the skill in the modern financial world. Incorporating programming languages such as Python and/or R, which are focused on data science, the module will allow you to develop your ability to extract, manipulate and evaluate financial data from multiple sources, utilising computing techniques, to draw reasoned and relevant conclusions.

Developing professional skills are also an important part of studying at Coventry University. This course has an embedded module accredited by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), Global Professional Development – Consultancy, which, upon successful completion, can give you a Level 7 Certificate in Strategic Management and Leadership, as long as you meet the CMI’s evidence requirements. Alongside this, there are also opportunities to embed professional experience into your course, either through the Project module, which could see you undertake an internship with a host company as part of your project, or through extending your course with the professional experience option.

Overview

In your first semester, you will get to grips with some key financial topics, to help develop your understanding of financial theory and the financial sector, including asset pricing, derivatives and knowledge of financial markets. Then, in your second semester, the modules covered focus more on Fintech, preparing you for any future career in the sector, by exploring predictive analytics, algorithmic trading and artificial intelligence. All modules are mandatory, although the order of modules may change.

In your final semester, you will undertake a project, which could take the form of a dissertation on a topic related to Fintech, or you may undertake an internship with a host company, to allow you to produce a report on the real world application of your learning to a work setting. Please note that any internships within the Project module are subject to availability, a competitive application process and meeting any applicable visa requirements.

To further develop your leadership skills, you will also study the Chartered Management Institute approved module ‘Global Professional Development – Consultancy’ in your final semester, which is designed to help hone your skills in advising on business decisions, and understanding how to lead others. Your main study themes on this course are:

  • Development of financial knowledge: The course seeks to develop your understanding of established and emerging financial principles, models and techniques, including knowledge of financial markets, asset pricing and derivatives.
  • Financial technology: Alongside key financial knowledge, the course seeks to develop your understanding of financial technology, from practical capabilities such as a knowledge of Python/R, predictive analytics and algorithmic trading, to broader knowledge of how to manage risk within technology platforms, and how Fintech can be effectively applied to real world financial situations.
  • Leadership and decision making: The course should help to develop key skills in leadership and decision making, to help support future careers in the finance or related sectors. This covers analytical capabilities, innovative risk management, and strategic decision-making, including data driven decision making.
  • Ethical and professional accountability: Alongside core course knowledge, you will also be given the opportunity to understand the importance of ethical and professional accountability, sound corporate governance, and civic contribution.

This course can be studied full-time over one year and may also be taken part-time over two years.Whilst we would like to give you all the information about our part-time offering here, it is tailored for each course each year depending on the number of part-time applicants. Therefore, the part-time teaching arrangements vary. You will be taught via lectures and by participating in seminars, using a wide range of technologies to enhance your digital fluency, including practical sessions with Python/R. These sessions may be delivered through a combination of face-to-face teaching and online classes and tutorials.

The course is highly practical and you will have the opportunity to be exposed to real-life case studies and computer simulations, which could help you to apply theory to practical examples and situations.

Many of our current teaching staff are research active and will disseminate up-to-date developments in their fields, which among others include the topics of risk optimisation, strategy in risk management, decision support and analysis, unexpected events and risk management. Research topics for the postgraduate project module are chosen in discussion with academic staff and a wide range of potential areas within risk management are available.

This course will be assessed using a variety of methods which will vary depending upon the module. Assessment methods include the Project, individual and group reports, presentations, face-to-face tests and formal exams.

On successful completion, you will be able to:

We set out below the typical teaching contact hours that you will receive on this course. Teaching contact hours will vary in different semesters. In addition to the contact hours below, we offer the opportunity to attend additional optional sessions, including sessions with the faculty’s progress coaches, or to meet with staff during their advice and feedback hours.

As an innovative and enterprising institution, the University may seek to utilise emerging technologies within the student experience. For all courses (whether on-campus, blended, or distance learning), the University may deliver certain contact hours and assessments via online technologies and methods.

Within your first and second semester, you should have around 13 contact hours of teaching a week which will include:

  • Small group teaching, such as seminars and workshops
  • Larger group teaching, such as lectures


A strong emphasis is placed on the Project module in your final semester and therefore total teaching contact hours may be reduced in the final semester.

In addition, you will be expected to undertake a significant amount of self-directed studying and revising in your own time each week, including some guided study using handouts, online activities etc.

This course is taught within Coventry Business School, which in the past has had a diverse and international student population, with could allow you to develop skills in working across cultures and contexts. Alongside this, our academic staff are drawn from all over the world, and bring to their teaching a variety of experiences developed during their careers.

Coventry Business School organises a number of national and international field visits, which have recently included trips to Paris, Brussels, South Korea, India and New York, and past students have visited such institutions as UNESCO and other multinational enterprises to tour their facilities to learn about their operations (field trips and international opportunities are not guaranteed and may be subject to additional costs, availability, application and meeting any applicable visa requirements).

Alongside trips at a school level, you can also join Coventry University’s Global Leaders Programme (GLP), an extracurricular option designed to develop you into a future world leader in your field, through advanced workshops, networking, international experiences and exposure to industry leaders. Graduate Immigration Route visa

Based on current information from the UK Government, international students whose study extends beyond summer 2021 may be eligible for a visa under the UK Government’s Graduate Immigration Route, which will enable students to stay and work, or look for work, in the UK at any skill level for up to two (2) years. Through the development of core financial knowledge, alongside Fintech knowledge and capabilities, this course should prepare you to pursue a career in Fintech, or in finance more broadly, in sectors such as investment banking or financial services.
