The Learning and Development Programme

Neighbourhood Policing Programme, accredited by Coventry University with a Certificate in Professional Development Modules included:

  • Community Centred Problem Solving
  • Addressing Community Priorities

The Organisation

Warwickshire Police have been protecting the residents and businesses of Warwickshire for more than 150 years. Their 1,244 officers and 133 PCSO’s have responsibility for protecting an area greater than 700 square miles, home to more than 519,000 residents. The Safer Neighbourhood Teams are part of Warwickshire Police and include Police Constables, Police Community Support Officers, Special Constables and volunteers. Safer Neighbourhood Teams work to reduce and prevent crime, as well as deal with instances of anti-social behaviour. They also provide support other areas of the police force
when they are needed. The Safer Neighbourhood Team plays a vital role in protecting people from harm throughout the county.

The Need

Warwickshire Police delivers training, known as the Neighbourhood Policing Programme, to members of its 33 Safer Neighbourhood Teams to help PCSO’s to consistently provide a high level of service to
the citizens of Warwickshire. Warwickshire Police identified the need for the role of the Safer Neighbourhood Teams to be recognised within the force and felt this could be achieved through the accreditation of its Neighbourhood Policing Programme.

The Solution

Working closely with Warwickshire Police, Acua accredited the Neighbourhood Policing Programme through its parent organisation Coventry University. The programme uses a combination of workbooks, contextualised exercises and in-house workshops to consolidate learning and ensure new techniques are applied to real-life community issues. An Acua business coach works with the force to assess and moderate the programme with successful participants achieving a university accredited qualification.

The impact

  • In the first year, 73 participants completed the Certificate in Professional Development
  • Participants demonstrated increased confidence and focus at work to fulfil the expectations of Warwickshire Police
  • There is increased awareness of the benefit and need to liaise with local communities and relevant
    agencies
  • Participants have an increased ability to identify and deliver creative and beneficial solutions to their team and to the wider police service
  • There is greater internal recognition of the contribution that the Safer Neighbourhood Teams make

Client Quote

The accreditation through Acua recognises the important role of the officers in our Safer Neighbourhood Teams. It helps them to develop their skills further and provides them with a clear focus to enable them to provide a better and more cost effective public service in line with the expectations of Warwickshire Police.”
