An exciting area of engineering many children dream of working in; our Automotive Engineering BEng can be continued to master’s level.

If you have a passion for cars, an enthusiasm for engineering and design, together with excellent maths and IT skills, this professionally accredited course will help put your interests and practical skills to good use. 

Focusing on how engineering is used in automotive applications, this course enables you to qualify first at Bachelor, and then if you choose to follow the MEng pathway, a Master’s degree level, ideal for those seeking leadership positions in the development of new technologies and design of future vehicles. It will provide a comprehensive understanding of the design criteria required to create a successful brand and product, setting you on the path to registering and practising as a Chartered Engineer, if you successfully complete Master’s level study.

Course information

Automotive engineers design, test and develop vehicles and/or components from concept to production.

In the first two years, you will study subjects that have been designed to broaden your perspective and understanding of the underlying engineering principles to bring you to a level where the detailed work in the automotive field can be studied. 

We will then focus purely on automotive subjects, considering engineering science as it is applied to automobile design, development and manufacture. You will be able to define your individual study plan, selecting from a range of options to complement core subjects in areas such as vehicle dynamics, aerodynamics, engines and powertrain, noise vibration and harshness (NVH), finite element analysis (FEA), intelligent transport, durability and reliability, advanced materials and manufacture.

You will develop an awareness of the wider responsibilities to society, especially in terms of issues relating to ethics, health, safety and sustainability. We will share the corporate context of engineering, alongside the commercial and technical risks associated with innovation, enabling you to deal with new and unusual challenges in automotive engineering. 

You will have the opportunity to participate in individual and group projects in the final year that can be selected according to your personal interests or future aspiration. Group projects have involved JLR, TEREX, Formula Student, Shell Eco Marathon and Horiba MIRA, while recent individual projects have included: an examination of linear motor implementation for rear active steering in our Formula Student vehicle; modelling and simulation of active suspension systems with preview, using Simpack; improving air flow through engine inlet air boxes; and optimisation of an automotive component design and manufacturing cycle using latest generation CAE solutions and 3D printing.

Studied full-time over three years for BEng and four years for MEng, this course incorporates a wide range of learning and teaching methods as part of our innovative activity-led learning. We motivate you to learn through stimulating activity, such as a project, problem, scenario, case study or enquiry in a classroom, laboratory or work setting. This has been proven to engage students and creates challenge, relevance, integration, professional awareness and variety to help you learn technical, personal and professional skills.

The full range of teaching methods include: lectures with associated practice, laboratory, workshop exercises and tutorials; problem-based learning in groups with tutor or industrial mentor support; group learning; formative modelling exercises; and independent research of library resources, the internet and engineering companies.

Between the second and third years of study, you have an opportunity to spend a year on placement or studying abroad. Our award-winning employability team, EC Futures, will help you secure the most appropriate placements, previously offered by BMW, Cummins, JLR, Nissan, Rolls Royce, Ricardo and TATA, with roles ranging from a ready engineer to stress and dynamics analyst in areas including vehicle assembly and powertrain development.

We motivate you to learn through stimulating activity, such as a project, problem, scenario, case study or enquiry in a classroom, laboratory or work setting.

This course will be assessed using a variety of methods which will could vary depending upon the module. Assessment methods include coursework, tests, essays, formal examinations, practical or project work, group work, presentations, posters etc.

The Coventry University Group assessment strategy ensures that our courses are fairly assessed and allows us to monitor student progression towards the achieving the intended learning outcomes. Assessments may include exams, individual assignments or group work elements.

On successful completion, you should be able to:

  • Apply and demonstrate knowledge of science, processes, materials, design and management to solve problems of increasing complexity.
  • Search for and evaluate information sources to identify information essential to solving engineering problems.
  • Model, analyse and evaluate innovative automotive engineering systems using appropriate engineering science and mathematical analysis techniques to increase performance and efficiency.
  • Synthesise solutions to innovative engineering design problems, selecting appropriate instrumentation for the functional design of innovative engineering products and systems and to support development and test work.
  • Use test equipment and machines for experimental work to support product development.
  • Use commercial software in the solution of engineering problems and communicate graphically the design of a component or system through sketches, CAD etc.
  • Assess the business case for a project, analysing the benefits, uncertainties and risks, including an analysis of stakeholder needs, expectations and their associated impact on the project.
  • Critically analyse the engineering results from a problem associated with stress analysis, aerodynamics, dynamics, noise and vibrations.
  • Plan and implement a strategy, using selected computer tools, for the modelling, simulation and analysis of typical vehicle performance tests ensuring an efficient and effective contribution to the vehicle design process.
  • Understand the requirements of a project develop work plans and ensure all the deliverables are met at set deadlines and the project is kept on track from start to finish.

DLHE 2014/15

In a typical week you will have up to 20 ‘contact’ hours of teaching. This generally breaks down as follows:

  • Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 1 hour of tutorial, later individual project supervision, every week.
  • Medium group teaching: 7 hours of practical laboratory, workshops or seminars every week.
  • Large group teaching: 8-12 hours of lectures each week.

In addition, you will be expected to undertake a further 16-20 hours of self-directed study each week, eg. Revising, using guided handouts, online activities etc.

The University is committed to providing a global educational experience. We invite international guest lectures, for example, a leading automotive engineering professor at Heilbronn University is giving our students a presentation on the Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) research and the motion platform driving simulator they have built at Heilbronn.

We also provide opportunities to participate in a number of field trips, which in the past has included: test work at the GM proving ground; a tour of the Ford F150 factory in Detroit, USA; a tour of Hirata, a Japanese Tier 1 automotive supplier for Ford, Chrysler and GM; participation on a certificated training course with Altair on Inspire; and visits to Mahle Powertrain, the University of Michigan and Chrysler Building.

We also encourage you to undertake a placement year or study year abroad after your second year of study. Previously students have studied at HAN University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands and Esslingen University in Germany.

Entry Requirements

University Course Code: ECU156
A Level BTEC IB Diploma GCSE requirement
ABB-BBB to include Mathematics and one from Physics, Chemistry, Design Technology, Further Mathematics, Electronics, Computing, ICT or Engineering. Excludes General Studies D*DD-DDM in an Engineering subject to include Mathematics and Further Mathematics for Technicians. 31 points to include Mathematics and either Physics, Chemistry, Design Technology or IT at Higher level 5 GCSEs at grade A*-C including English, Mathematics, or specified equivalents.

A-Levels

A-Level applicants are required to have three
 A2 Levels. Coventry University may include AS grades within an offer for certain courses, but we are not able to accept two AS Levels in place of one A2 Level. In some courses it may be necessary for entrants to have passed specific A2 Levels in nominated subjects. Please see the course pages for more information.

Access Diplomas

The Access Diploma to be assessed on an individual basis.

Coventry University welcomes applicants who have completed, or who are studying, the Access to HE Diploma developed by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA). Successful completion of the course will require you to gain 60 credits with at least 45 to be achieved at Level 3 (with the remainder at Level 2). In some cases we will require you to have gained Merit or Distinction grades in a number of units or in nominated subjects. BTEC Level 3 Diplomas

The University will accept the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma for entry to most courses. In some cases we will require applicants to have studied either certain named modules or a specific named Diploma. The appropriate course page will have full information on the entry requirements. The University also accepts the BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma and BTEC Level 3 Diploma for entry to degree programmes, provided that they are studied in combination with other qualifications that provide a total volume of study that is equivalent to three A2 Levels. For example, you could be studying a BTEC Level 3 Diploma plus an A2 Level, or a BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma plus two A2 Levels. Where a specific A2 or BTEC subject is required for entry then you must be offering this as part of your combination of qualifications.

Unconditional offers

We want to recruit the best students to Coventry and having assessed applicants' past, current and predicted performance and commitment to the course we feel that it is appropriate to reward consistently high-achieving students with an unconditional offer from Coventry University. It is a commitment from us with regard to an applicants’ potential as an excellent undergraduate and we hope that this will encourage such applicants to join the Coventry community. Personal statements and references will also be taken into account and, for some degree courses, an interview will form part of the assessment. The criteria for unconditional offers will vary across the University as entry requirements for specific courses differ and not all degree courses will be taking part in the Scheme.

We will consider other qualifications for a pre-result unconditional offer providing that you have an appropriate proven performance at GCSE (or equivalent) level and predicted grades in line with grades that we expect to see at A-level. Other qualifications that we may consider for a pre-result unconditional offer include: The International Baccalaureate Diploma, BTEC Level 3 qualifications, Cambridge Pre-U and combinations of qualifications (e.g. BTECS plus A-levels).

An unconditional offer is what it says it is. So, if you don’t meet your predictions then your place at Coventry is still guaranteed. However, we would hope and expect that you continue to work hard to make the most of your potential and be best prepared to study at university level.

We can’t but our experience over the years has shown us that students with a track record of high grades and excellent predictions are very likely to achieve those grades. Our assessment takes into account all elements of your application to allow us to take a holistic view of your potential. There is also the opportunity to apply to one of the Coventry University Scholarships if you achieve the required grades so there is a financial incentive to aim high. Unconditional offers are only made to individuals who have demonstrated their commitment so we believe their focus and determination is unlikely to waver in the final stages of their qualifications.

EU student fees

EU nationals must have resided in the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland for the three years prior to the start of their course. The purpose of that three year residency should not have been mainly for the purpose of receiving full time education.

Career prospects

Fully accredited by the IMechE, the course is as such recognised in industry, providing credibility of the technical standard of our graduates among employers.

Industry-related projects will give you a feel of what the demands and expectations will be in the workplace, as well as enabling you to practice and apply your skills to real engineering projects. You will also gain practical, hands-on experience in preparing, running and analysing results from experimental testing and numerical analysis. Students have experienced placements with: Honda, in new product introduction; Aston Martin, in special vehicle projects data acquisition; NP Aerospace, working on the new range of military vehicles; Eaton Trucks, in gearbox design; McLaren Automotive, in software test and evaluation; BMW, in vehicle trim and materials; and Cummins Engines, on engine development and build.
