Overview

Career guidance remains at the heart of UK government policies regarding education, employment and training, which are more important than ever in our rapidly-changing economy and labour market.

Underpinned by an ethos promoting ethical and client-centred professional practice, this course aims to equip you with relevant, high quality career guidance practitioner skills such as interviewing and developing career learning programmes, as well as designing and using labour market information to provide effective insight and advice.

Taught through Blended learning (On-line and face-face teaching) and fully accredited by the Career Development Institute (CDI), on successful completion you will additionally be eligible for the Qualification in Career Development (QCD) (please note that this is subject to membership, application and additional costs will apply) which will allow you to work in a variety of career guidance provider contexts. The CDI is the UK-wide professional body for everyone working in the fields of career education; career information, advice and guidance; career coaching, career consultancy and career management.

As part of this course you will undertake a professional development module  which is currently accredited by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) for the 2020-21 intake. Upon successful completion of the module, you will gain the CMI Level 7 Certificate in Strategic Management and Leadership Practice at no additional cost. Coventry University’s accreditation with CMI is currently ongoing for the relevant modules and is regularly reviewed and monitored by the CMI through their quality systems. Whilst Coventry University anticipates that these reviews will continue to be successful, if they were to be unsuccessful, the relevant module in this course would no longer be accredited and we would notify applicants and students of this change as soon as possible

Course information

The aim of the course is to give you the practical skills, theoretical knowledge and professional values that help to enable you to meet the needs of clients in a wide range of work settings. Upon successful completion of the course you will gain an understanding of how to deliver careers support to diverse individuals and groups and manage career development activities, as well as how to manage your own career development, whether as an employee or as a self-employed person, researcher or practitioner within a changing UK and international landscape.

The course provides you with an opportunity to study and enhance your knowledge and skills in career development and guidance to inform professional practice within business and organisational settings. Working in public, private, voluntary and community settings, career guidance practitioners assist a range of adults and young people to make decisions about their education, training, jobs and careers.

The theory and practice of career guidance in a contemporary context is central to our curriculum; its purpose, aims, benefits to society and people, and its varied delivery methods. We will consider the importance of equality, diversity and social justice to the delivery of career guidance, using case studies drawn from a wide variety of organisational contexts to reflect real-life challenges, such as those faced by university careers services in developing employability provision.

You will receive training in a variety of interview models, covering the specialist skills needed for your work with clients, including networking, group work, presentation theories and techniques. We will also teach you how to evaluate career-related and labour market information.

Modules

Overview

Working effectively as a careers advisor requires a number of core interpersonal and professional skills: active listening and communication skills, building good working relationships, flexibility, adaptability and patience. There are two placements which will introduce you to a professional and academic network of guidance providers and practitioners. Previous students have undertaken their placements in a diverse range of organisations, including schools, colleges, HEIs and adult guidance settings, and community organisations that offer career and employment coaching.

If you choose to pursue the Master’s qualification, you will be required to undertake a supervised research project, on which you will write a dissertation. Past students have covered a range of topics, such as: the career experiences of working age adults with visual impairments; the effectiveness of career learning programmes in schools; and the experiences of female refugees in the UK labour market.

Modules

  • Semester 1

    • Models of Career Guidance Interventions: This module evaluates your own values and beliefs and their potential impact on practice, whilst also developing high level communication and analytical skills to plan, conduct and evaluate effective guidance interventions. You will be introduced to a number of career interview techniques and models, including the Coventry interview model, how to refer clients, advocate on their behalf and broker agreements where needed.
    • Career Theory: Drawing on theories from many disciplines including sociology and psychology, this module develops your understanding of how and why people make career decisions and what motivates those decisions. We also explore the implications of social justice for career guidance, both nationally and internationally.
    • Engaging with practice: This module provides you with opportunities to develop your practitioner skills in career guidance settings. It will develop your insights into the ways in which career guidance providers organise and offer their services, and the roles that various team members play in supporting career choice. You will have the chance to practice career interviewing skills and develop the skills of critical self-reflection in order to appraise and improve skills and knowledge.
    • Organisational Management: The aim of this module is to develop and enhance your critical appreciation of your own ‘managerial style’, You will also study ‘managerialism’, including its impact on practitioner ethics and values, and the development of careers provision in the UK. You are expected to develop an understanding of the crucial role of leadership, management, partnership working, developing formal and informal relationships in enabling organisations to adapt to and meet the challenges posed by contemporary agendas in education, training and employment.
    • Social Research Methods: Career Development practitioners are increasingly called on to produce and review research projects to support changes in practice. You will gain critical insights into research design and methodology aimed at enabling you to conduct a small scale focused investigation into a specific professional practice related issue

  • Semester 2

    • Career Educator: This module aims to develop and enhance your critical appreciation of the development of careers education and guidance provision in the UK and globally. The ways in which contemporary agendas in education, training and employment are reshaping both the structure and operation of guidance provision will be explored, with a focus on the increasing use of electronic media to shape and deliver career guidance and development interventions.
    • Labour Market Information: This module is designed to enable you to research, design and use labour market information (LMI) with clients to support career choice, with a strong emphasis on digital sources of information, reflecting the increased use of e-resources to provide information and to support reflection and choice. In addition, the module will critically explore the barriers that may deter clients from making effective use of LMI and encourage you to formulate strategies that enable diverse groups of clients to make informed and effective decisions.
    • Placement Practice: The aim of this module is to develop and enhance your core professional skills in practice settings. These will include conducting client-centred group activities with a range of clients and others; identifying appropriate resources and information; developing the ability to enable clients to access and interpret career-related information. You will develop your in-depth interviewing skills further with clients, using a variety of interview models as appropriate. You will also critically assess the role of significant others such as parents, carers, peers and wider community influences in clients’ career decision-making. You will also develop your own career planning by engaging with continuous professional development (CPD).

  • Semester 3

    • Research project: You will undertake a 12,500-word research project on an issue of personal interest with the support of an allocated Supervisor. (MA Only)
    • Management module: This has been developed with the Chartered Institute of Management (CMI). You will cover Strategic Leadership, Strategic Leadership Practice and Tools and Techniques for Effective Consultancy. (MA Only)

  • Fully accredited by the Career Development Institute (CDI), you will additionally be eligible for the Qualification in Career Development (QCD) (please note that this is subject to membership, application and additional costs will apply) , providing eligibility to join the professional practitioners’ register. Additional costs to become a member of the CDI and join the register will apply. Exceptional levels of student completion – 100% completion rate across all programmes in the Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey (PTES) 2017/18.
  • Access to our well-resourced online learning environment which has been praised by students, external examiners and the professional body.

Career Development theory and practice from a client, service, national and international perspective; Practitioner skills development; e-learning, social media and digital platforms for professional development and client-based practice; ethics and diversity; and, organisational development.

This course can be studied over one or over two years, starting in September. Full-time students are normally taught through a mixture of weekday classes and Saturday schools; part- time students are taught via Saturday schools alone.

All students follow a comprehensive blended learning programme including recorded lectures, extensive topic guides, blogs, and digitised guided reading.

You will complete a minimum of 30 days on placement, plus 5 days of Continuing Professional Development. Those working in a career guidance or related role can use this as the basis of their placements, but they are also encouraged to gain some experience of alternative provision elsewhere. All students are supported by flexible tutorials via e-mail, phone, Skype or face-to-face discussions.

To ensure that the programme incorporates up-to-date developments and the latest challenges facing guidance providers and service users, we sometimes invite expert guest speakers. Past students have heard from researchers who have explored the use of narrative techniques in interviews, as well as speakers from the professional body.

Where possible, our coursework uses applied tasks that mimic the skills needed in jobs, to help you become attractive to future employers, such as producing information and labour market products.

The Coventry University Group assessment strategy ensures that our courses are fairly assessed and allows us to monitor student progression towards the achieving the intended learning outcomes. Assessments may include individual assignments, Vlogs, and group presentations.

On successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of: the theories that may account for career choice and development; models of career guidance interventions, such as interview models, career learning approaches and the research, design and use of labour market information; the political, social, economic and technological contexts that shape and inform career guidance provision, including relevant policies and legislation; and relevant codes of ethical practice that inform and underpin career guidance practice.
  • Conduct career guidance interviews based on a comprehensive understanding of relevant interview models. 
  • Plan, design and deliver career learning programmes and sessions, also based on an in-depth insight into relevant theories of learning and models of delivery. 
  • Operate effectively in a range of complex organisational contexts.

One-year students should spend approximately 10 hours per week on the blended learning programme, plus two days’ placement per week starting in early November (10 days in semester one and 20 days in semester 2). There is access to tutors for 1:1 and group tutorial support.

Two-year students are expected to spend at least six hours per week on the blended learning programme, plus (at predetermined times) one day per week on placement activities. They will need to attend 8-10 Saturday Schools in year one and 4-5 in year two. MA students will need to attend an additional 5 Saturday Schools in year 2. All Saturday Schools last from 10am to 5pm and include workshops and group activities. In addition, there is access for 1:1 tutorial support.

Students have, in the past, being able to attend a conference in Vietnam, had a placement organised in Australia. Additional costs and visa requirements apply.

EU student fees

EU nationals and their family members starting in the 2019/20 academic year remain eligible for the same fees as home students and the same financial support. Graduate Immigration Route visa

Based on current information from the UK Government, international students whose study extends beyond summer 2021 may be eligible for a visa under the UK Government’s Graduate Immigration Route, which will enable students to stay and work, or look for work, in the UK at any skill level for up to two (2) years.
