My experiences of studying for a master’s

We spoke with Dhanashree Singh about her experiences of postgraduate study at Coventry University.

Why did you choose Coventry University for your studies?

The university has top notch facilities from 24/7 access to the library, to industry software relevant to each course, and the unique modules of the course made it interesting and different.

They upheld their promise to give out exceptional knowledge and experience too.

What practical elements are embedded in your course?

The study is given more of a practical angle than a theoretical one, which is so much better than rote learning.

I’ve been on a field trip to the BBC in Cardiff and I’m currently working on a postgraduate consultancy project which involves working for a real client for three months, as a part of my dissertation.

There are a lot of practical events that keep happening from time to time too. The Graduation Fair was set up in person for a week and was full of opportunities; everyday there was something new with real clients coming in as well as workshops offering different skill developments.

What do you hope to get from your master’s?

I’m hoping to have developed an extensive practical as well as theoretical knowledge in the field of advertising and marketing.

I feel confident and smart enough to face the real job market due to my experiences at the university.

Have you had the chance to make friends?

Absolutely, it’s lovely to be surrounded with people from all over the world, to learn about them and to network/socialise with such diverse groups.

The social team in my accommodation organises social events almost every week which is fun, and you don’t tend to feel alone.

What are your experiences of Coventry as a city?

It’s a nice, quiet and peaceful place to live. It’s quite cheap as well, making it a perfect city for students. The city feels like home due to its properly spread out and maintained environment.

Do you have any advice for someone looking to do your course?

I’d 10/10 recommend pursuing the course that I’m studying; its modules are detailed and focused, providing a good learning experience, also it’s a fun and chill course with a high creative quotient included.

The professors are always helpful and supportive too, they provide extra help by agreeing to conduct a one-on-one if needed.

As an international student there is no need to feel alone: it might get a bit overwhelming at times, but you become responsible and brave living in another country all by yourself. Moving out and experiencing things for yourself is the best thing you can do in terms of your personal growth and development.
