My experiences of studying the International Commercial Law LLM

We spoke to Edward Ileomoh about his experiences of postgraduate study at Coventry University.

Why did you choose Coventry University for your postgraduate studies?

I had already worked as a courtroom litigator for about ten years so for my postgraduate studies, the location was a major consideration for me. I wanted all the benefits of a calm family environment and when needed, a city-like appeal. Coventry University ticked all the boxes for me.

What practical elements are embedded in your course?

As a member of the Coventry University Law Society, I competed in the Coventry University Moot Court Competitions and had the spectacular opportunity to attend the final competition at The Supreme Court,Parliament Square in London.

I now also work part-time for the university as a Student Ambassador with the Environmental Sustainability Team.

These opportunities where possible only because I came to Coventry University - one of the best decisions I have made.

Could you choose to do a real-world project for your dissertation?

I am very interested in the very ‘real-world’ process of arbitration, so my dissertation focused on the role of the courts in a private process, but that ultimately, is a net positive for everyone involved.

Arbitration can be a complex, lengthy and delicate process so I was extremely grateful for the professional guidance of my supervisor, who helped me streamline my dissertation ideas.

Additionally, I cannot help but mention the mentorship I received throughout my course; my professors went above and beyond to help me see the possibilities my future held, post-graduation.

What has the teaching style been like and has it been much different to what you are used to?

The teaching style is very engaging and open. It demands your contribution and feedback, rather than you being a passive recipient. That's a good thing.

How would you rate the university facilities?

Simply put ‘world class’.

What do you hope to get from your master’s and how has postgraduate study prepared you for your future career?

Having already practised law before deciding to come to Coventry University, I was looking for a course that prepared me for a limitless future in the commercial legal sector.

Thanks to my International Commercial Law LLM my commercial awareness has quadrupled, as has my sensitivity to commercially beneficial opportunities.

I have gained a perspective I just wouldn't have acquired by any other means.

I am also taking a course at the Charted Management Institute (CMI) as part of my LLM. At the end of this module, I will qualify as a member of the CMI and they will partner with me with world-class continued professional development.

Did you do an additional work placement?

I got a work placement at the Central England Law Centre, a not-for-profit agency, that provides free legal advice. This opportunity is another example of why my decision to come to Coventry University was a masterstroke.

I got to be in a team of great people, striving for a fairer and more equitable society. I am proud to be part of a team as that uses our collective legal knowledge and expertise to help those who need it most.

Have you attended any career fairs or career workshops or received any other career support?

I had the opportunity to attend a couple of career fairs and career workshops, which were great opportunities to network and interact with the legal industry. It was also a chance to get some great feedback from various teams in an informal setting.

As a member of the Coventry University Law Society, I was able to volunteer at their LAWFEST 24 event. It’s a legal career fair hosted on campus and not only did I take part, I helped make it all happen!

The whole experience was incredibly rewarding.

Have you received any support from the university? For example, support from a Success Coach?

The support I received has been beneficial to my post-grad experience.

My Success Coach helped me integrate into campus life and members of the Talent Team (careers support service) offered insightful advice as well as providing extra academic resources. I also accessed the Centre for Academic Writing (CAW) for some help.

The level of support available shortened the social learning curve for me and as an international student, this was very important.

Have you had the chance to make friends from different countries and learn about other cultures?

Yes. I've made friends with people from everywhere and have come to appreciate other cultures as a result.

What are your experiences of Coventry as a city?

In addition to being a nice place to live and study, Coventry is right in the middle of the country. It makes it really easy to hop on a train and explore the UK more.

Where are you living during your studies? How are you finding it?

I live in an apartment not too far from the university. It’s close enough to walk to the city-centre campus and it’s brand new - it’s perfect.

Do you have any advice for someone looking to do your course?

Come with an open mind so you can experience everything university life, the city and the country have to offer.

And do everything demanded by your course in time!

Are you an international student? If yes, do you have any advice or tips for future postgraduate students from your home country?

Yes, I am an international student and my tips for future postgraduate students from my home country are:

  1. you have to be deliberate about your future and actively participate in your tomorrow by taking every opportunity today offers - this will not happen by default.
  2. you've got to make it happen - you can't win the lottery without a ticket. Don't hesitate, take the plunge and maximise every opportunity.
