Overview

Increasing populations create the need to build more buildings than ever before, bringing the demand for appropriately trained and qualified construction professionals to its all-time high.

As part of this course, you will work on an integrated project which utilises ‘real life’ construction scenarios in a virtual stimulated environment, to prepare you for the challenges of the professional world. This course is accredited by The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) until 1 April 2023, having been judged to meet the CIOB Education Framework. Prospective members holding these qualifications will have full academic exemption and once they have gained three to five years’ relevant work experience, may enter CIOB membership as an applicant to progress towards Chartered Membership without the requirement for an Individual Assessment.

This course is designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills to enter the world of construction management with confidence in your ability in the areas of technology, legislation, costing and the performance of buildings.

Additionally, we will encourage you to develop the innovation and creativity required to tackle the complex problems faced by the industry, including space, sustainability, cost and technology, not just in the UK but with consideration for the global nature of the industry.

The course is primarily designed to be studied part-time by students currently in employment.

To be awarded a masters degree you must successfully complete modules worth 180 credits. All content will be delivered through a flexible model where students choose the number of modules they will study across a given academic term. Each 13 week term is comprised of 5 sets of 2 week blocks of learning (e.g. 5 x 2 weeks) with the remainder of the term used for assessment (e.g. 3 weeks).

For each module we will provide engaging video lectures and a variety of interactive content and activities. The online contact between lecturers and colleagues will help you stay motivated and committed to learning.

This online course allows busy professionals to fit their studies into other commitments, and maximise work-study balance.

Please note: Coventry University aims to provide an electronic copy of the core texts for each module, however on this occasion JCT (2016): Standard building contract with quantities (SBC/Q): United Kingdom: Sweet & Maxwell, which forms a key reading for the Contract Management Practice and Law module, is not available in electronic form due to publishers’ permissions. We strongly encourage students to purchase a hardcopy of this book or access an electronic version via other means to complete this module/assessment.

This course will be assessed using a variety of methods which will could vary depending upon the module. Online assessment methods include watching videos, reading articles, tests and completing assignments.

A key aspect of the MSc Construction Management with BIM course, and therefore an excellent reason to choose Coventry University is our integrated project. The project will utilise ‘real life’ construction scenarios and engage our students in role play representing their developing skillset within a virtual simulated environment. Students will develop crucial collaborative skills using several digital construction and communication platforms. Scenario-based learning is a critical tool in preparing our students for the challenges of the professional world. This is an integral part of the degree ensuring students can collaborate effectively when they enter industry.

The Coventry University Group assessment strategy ensures that our courses are fairly assessed and allows us to monitor student progression towards the achieving the intended learning outcomes. Assessments may include exams, individual assignments or group work elements.

On successful completion, you should be able to:

  • Apply the main principles of building technology, design and performance. This includes regulatory, procurement, legal, financial, social, technological aspects including Building Information Modelling during the inception, planning, design, construction, use and redundancy phases of the building process.
  • Accept professional and ethical responsibility. Critical evaluation of knowledge and application of ethics and professionalism within the construction management role.  Governance and corporate social responsibility in respect to procurement, finance and contractual processes and working practices.
  • Appraise, evaluate and advise on current issues in construction including regulatory, legal, policy, sustainability, innovation and internationalisation.  
  • Analyse, solve and advise on construction management problems of an advanced technical, quality assurance and managerial nature, with sound judgement.
  • Identify risks, integrate and ensure a safe working environment and risk management in terms of legislation, health and safety, management and personal responsibility.
  • Critically analyse the multi-disciplinary nature of the construction process including collaboration and Building Information Modelling.  The roles and responsibilities of the construction professionals and stakeholders, and a respect for the fellow team members in terms of both diversity and cultural values.
  • Select and use a range of appropriate IT platforms for the efficient and appropriate completion of construction related tasks. Analyse, interpret and present information using appropriate information technology processes. 
  • Carry out independent in-depth research investigations of a specialised topic, applying appropriate ethical research methodologies. Produce professional reports in accordance with published conventions and/or client expectations.

Each 15 credit module will consist of 150 hours activities. The activity time will be made up of a mixture of guided and self-guided study. Students will have access to an experienced team of tutors and lecturers who will support their studies. Each module will have dedicated online tutorials to support the learning.

Entry Requirements

At least a 2.2 undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in a Built Environment or Civil Engineering related degree.

Degrees outside of the specified discipline (non cognate) or applications from those not possessing the equivalent of an honours degree will be considered on individual merit and decisions will be based on careful evaluation of the capacity of the applicant to complete the programme successfully.

At least a 2.2 undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in a Built Environment or Civil Engineering related degree.

Degrees outside of the specified discipline (non cognate) or applications from those not possessing the equivalent of an honours degree will be considered on individual merit and decisions will be based on careful evaluation of the capacity of the applicant to complete the programme successfully.
