It was very challenging but I would say to anyone wanting to do the course or to go back to education that it is so worthwhile. The course has given me a wider view, not just of what we are facing as challenges in our local NHS, but on a global scale to improve the lives of the people we are serving. It has given me more skills and knowledge and is something I will build on and take into my workplace. I would recommend it to everybody.

What you'll study

This course features a range of current and management theories relevant to the health and social care sectors. In addition, it also explores multi-cultural and international dimensions of healthcare management. The course is designed to develop your entrepreneurial skills and offer support with seeking employment opportunities2.

Modules

  • This module offers you the opportunity to critically evaluate theoretical principles of leadership which can then be applied to your current or future practice. The module covers leadership, personal effectiveness, management of people and teamworking alongside exploring the current literature on leadership. The module offers you the opportunity to develop your reflective skills, enabling you to reflect on your own qualities as an emergent leader and to consider how to develop yourself for their future practice. The overall aim of the module is to develop leaders with the confidence and skills, enabling you to become competent and reflective in your future leadership roles.

    Compulsory

  • The module critically considers the relationship between the political process; the development of health policies; and the implementation of service changes locally resulting from national and international policy drivers. You will explore the key actors and organisations in the development and implementation of global, transnational, national and local health policies and consider the drivers for health policy. You will consider the ways in which healthcare leaders communicate and market polices, how equity, equality and efficiency are incorporated into policy design, and how the effectiveness of policies are measured.

    Compulsory

  • This module develops your critical and conceptual understanding of global health issues associated with globalisation process and global change. While taking part in this module, you will develop skills for interpreting the drivers and different forms of globalisation to understand their impact on health systems ability to prevent the emergence and spread of communicable and non-communicable diseases. It prepares you to critically analyse the challenges facing not just governmental health agents, but national, regional and international partnerships coming together in order to build and manage strong health systems and healthy populations.

    Compulsory

  • The Global Healthcare Management Portfolio has two functions; to showcase achievement across the course with evidence of study output, and to enable you to critically reflect on individual learning and development as you progress with your studies.

Alongside the presentation of material, you will maintain a journal or blog, enabling you to critically reflect on your study journey. Over the progress of the course, this will provide you with valuable information to link theory and practice, integrating learning and experience. Crucially, it provides a link between all of the taught modules, following key course themes and presenting a complete overview of Global Health Management.

    Compulsory

  • This module will enable you to demonstrate a critical understanding of the complexity of health systems, stakeholders and the impact of culture, values on and within health and social care organisations and global health systems. It will consider management concepts, theories, models and tools, and your critical application to healthcare organisations in global contexts and seek to understand the challenges of leading and managing complex systems, stakeholders and services and a highly professionalised workforce. You will use this understanding to critically evaluate the impact on systems and organisations delivering services to patients and service users.

    Compulsory

  • This module aims to support you to think analytically and build key study skills. This will enable you to cognitively engage with the complexities of evidence and consider critically how literature can be assessed, rigorously analysed and used in combination to enable understanding. This critical understanding will allow you to develop a set of high-level skills and the confidence to deploy them in both an academic and work context to make informed decisions across a gamut of global, local and professional settings.

    Compulsory

  • This module aims to support the development of the advanced skills and knowledge of strategic planning to support decision making across healthcare systems and within healthcare organisations. You will critically examine qualitative and quantitative approaches to decision-making, the application of financial management to support the implementation of strategic plans including how to make the case for change in health systems. You will critically analyse how to ensure effective workforce planning in healthcare and how to transform and development the current healthcare workforce. You will also explore the leadership approaches to recruiting and retaining talent in healthcare systems.

    Compulsory

  • This module aims to provide you with a framework of knowledge and understanding of how to effectively lead and develop people in organisations for better health and wellbeing using a range of approaches whatever the master’s degree of specialisation you elect to follow. You will explore for example, the influence and impact of leadership theories, culture and the impact of health and wellbeing on organisational performance in different types of organisational scenarios. You will appraise contemporary approaches for the creation of healthy work systems with emphasis placed upon modern-day methods and the role and skills of leaders in coaching and mentoring.

Ultimately, you will be given the opportunity to propose a series of recommendations to create and sustain a positive culture of health and wellbeing within an organisational context. Finally, the module requires you to reflect critically on your personal learning and development needs and how they work with others, from an ethical and professional standpoint to encourage your continuing professional development. The question key to this module is: What effective strategies can I utilise to promote an inclusive and healthy work culture to raise and sustain employee performance levels in a range of contemporary organisations?

    Compulsory

  • The module is the culmination of the course and enables you to bring together your learning into one independent self-directed project. You will gain support through supervision with an allocated tutor, offering guidance on the focus of the healthcare management problem or issue and advice on all stages in the development and design of the proposed transformation business case. Peer-to-peer mentoring will be a key feature of the module. The project will take the form of a business case proposal, seeking to gain first stage approval for implementation from a virtual Health Executive Board. The proposal will demonstrate an analysis of an important health management problem or issue affecting service delivery, appraise the evidence for different options, undertake a quality impact assessment, proposing a realistic and viable service redesign initiative or innovation. The aim of the business case proposal will be to transform the delivery of an aspect of health care that benefits the welfare of service users and/or employees.

    Compulsory

*Teaching and Learning related to the Global Healthcare Management Portfolio is undertaken across the course, assessment undertaken in modules in each semester contribute to the final assessment, undertaken in semester 3.

We regularly review our course content, to make it relevant and current for the benefit of our students. For these reasons, course modules may be updated.

How you'll learn

The learning required of master’s students requires you to be mainly self-directed and independent in your study, supported through a variety of methods:

  • Face-to-face/online teaching in which you engage with learning materials and activities hosted on our online platform, further explored through either campus-based seminars
  • Individual or group supervision
  • Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) hosting lecture notes and supportive material
  • Digitised reading materials, accessed through the university library

Teaching contact hours

In a typical week you will be required to engage with around 12 hours of blended or online teaching, including seminars, workshops and tutorials. Master’s students are strongly encouraged to prepare for the seminars and workshops that they are timetabled for, which will usually include some groupwork activities enabling you to fully engage in discussion and debate with each other to facilitate your learning. There is a strong link between students who undertake reading and self-directed independent study outside the formal teaching sessions and their achievement on the course.

Additionally, you will be expected to undertake significant self-directed study of approximately 36 hours each week, depending on the demands of individual modules.

In semester 1, weekly support sessions are timetabled alongside module teaching to facilitate students’ development of key study skills to foster positive learning experiences and successful achievement of coursework assignments.
The Transforming Healthcare Business Case Project requires students to work closely with an academic tutor across the final semester, either in 1:1 or group tutorials in the development of the coursework.

The contact hours may be made up of a combination of face-to-face teaching, individual and group tutorials, and online classes and tutorials.

As an innovative and enterprising institution, the university may seek to utilise emerging technologies within the student experience. For all courses (whether on-campus, blended, or distance learning), the university may deliver certain contact hours and assessments via online technologies and methods.

Since COVID-19, we have delivered our courses in a variety of forms, in line with public authority guidance, decisions, or orders and we will continue to adapt our delivery as appropriate. Whether on campus or online, our key priority is staff and student safety.

We offer a range of International scholarships to students all over the world. For more information, visit our International Scholarships page.

Tuition fees cover the cost of your teaching, assessments, facilities and support services. There may be additional costs not covered by this fee such as accommodation and living costs, recommended reading books, stationery, printing and re-assessments should you need them.

The following are additional costs not included in the tuition fees:

  • Any optional overseas field trips or visits: £400+ per trip.

*Irish student fees

The rights of Irish residents to study in the UK are preserved under the Common Travel Area arrangement. If you are an Irish student and meet the residency criteria, you can study in England, pay the same level of tuition fees as English students and utilise the Tuition Fee Loan.

**EU support bursary

Following the UK's exit from the European Union, we are offering financial support to all eligible EU students who wish to study an undergraduate or a postgraduate degree with us full-time. This bursary will be used to offset the cost of your tuition fees to bring them in line with that of UK students. Students studying a degree with a foundation year with us are not eligible for the bursary.

  • We carry out an initial fee status assessment based on the information you provide in your application. Your fee status determines your tuition fees, and what financial support and scholarships may be available to you. The rules about who pays UK (home) or international (overseas) fees for higher education courses in England are set by the government's Department for Education. The regulations identify all the different categories of student who can insist on paying the home rate. The regulations can be difficult to understand, so the UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) has provided fee status guidance to help you identify whether you are eligible to pay the home or overseas rate.

If you meet all the criteria required by any one category, including any residence requirements, your institution must charge you the home rate. You only need to find one category that you fit into.

Careers and opportunities

On completion of the courses, some graduates have moved into a range of junior and middle management or clinical leadership roles in health, social care, or third sector settings, either by securing positions in the UK or returning to their home country. Some graduates have chosen to engage in further research-based study related to Leadership and Management in Health by securing a PhD studentship either at Coventry University or other UK-based universities.

Successfully completing a Global Healthcare Management MSc is an excellent way to build leadership and management capabilities for those wishing to pursue careers within healthcare, social care and third sector organisations.

The learning and development demanded by both courses aims to give graduates the skills for senior-level employment, be it related to a discrete service department or hospital unit, private or publicly funded hospital, service or healthcare company. It encourages students to develop the skillset for posts in, for example, local, regional, national or even international government policy-making bodies (for example Professional Bodies, Ministries of Health, World Health Organization).

Opportunities within health-related industries - e.g. the pharmaceutical industry - may also be relevant for some graduates.
