Course information

Architecture at Coventry University is taught as a liberal discipline that is technically, professionally, socially, and environmentally sustainable, placing an emphasis on architecture as a social practice and a technical process which deliberately spans both science and the arts.

We strive to provide an architectural education that is as complex as the field of architecture itself, but which nonetheless has clarity of intent and purpose and is stimulating and accessible. Our teaching reflects the nature of contemporary architecture as an international field of creative inquiry and the course incorporates exploration, collaboration and the critical analysis of a range of inputs from differing sources, to provide the knowledge, skills and confidence necessary for the role of the architect in a modern multidisciplinary building design process.

This is a modular course based primarily on design project work, supported by lectures and seminars that explore the cultural, technical and professional dimensions of architecture.

In more detail...

The course’s approach to internationalisation, collaborative working and individual creativity is relevant to the pluralistic nature of contemporary practice; and from the outset students discuss and consider their individual ideas in the context of their peer group and wider society.

The subject categories in which architecture operates: Design (process), Technology (including structure, construction and environmental control), Cultural Context (historical and contemporary) and Communication (visual and verbal) and Professional Practice, develop an understanding of the relationship between global issues, local context and the tectonics of architecture, and equip students with the intellectual, creative, and practical skills to apply their learning in an appropriate manner which meets the needs and aspirations not only of related professions and the wider construction industry, but of society in general.

Coventry University’s Education Strategy 2015-2021 has been fundamental to informing the principles that underpin the development of this course. It has been designed to prepare students to make significant contributions to their professions and communities, and to be a creative force in a rapidly evolving world. The strategy is based around six pillars of transformative learning and student experience:

  • Research inspired teaching
  • Embedded employability
  • Creativity and enterprise
  • Multicultural and international engagement
  • Community contribution and responsibility
  • Innovation and digital fluency

This course will be assessed using a variety of methods which will could vary depending upon the module.

The Coventry University Group assessment strategy ensures that our courses are fairly assessed and allows us to monitor student progression towards the achieving the intended learning outcomes. Assessments may include exams, individual assignments or group work elements.

There will be up to 15 hours per week contact time initially spread across Studio Practice, Lectures, Seminars, Workshops and Educational Visits. Most activities will take place over 2 days a week. This allows you enough time for significant self-study and exploration which is the basis of studying at master’s level, the proportion of which will increase building up to your final projects.

International case studies, practices and theories have been built into the course throughout. The course has strong connections with industry and other universities in Europe as well as overseas. You may have the opportunity to take part in international study visits and to work with international professionals and educators.
