If you have qualifications in this industry, upon successful completion our international course can boost you to degree level in Event and Hospitality Management.
One of the fastest growing economic sectors in the world, the dynamic event and hospitality industry is now a major employer around the world. There is an ever-increasing demand for individuals who can market and manage events, activities and services successfully.
This course, aimed at students from outside the UK, enables you to top-up your existing qualification to a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree upon successful completion of this course. Studied full-time over one year, entering in the final year of study, or full-time over two years, entering in the second year of study, it is designed to reflect the international nature of the hospitality and event industries and incorporates the advanced study of business English.

Course information
This course is designed to enhance your existing knowledge, skills and capabilities to respond proactively and creatively to contemporary issues in event management and hospitality operations within an increasingly global marketplace, upon successful completion of the course.
We combine the study of events marketing with hospitality management theory, aiming to provide a broad-based business education. Subjects covered include corporate planning and event marketing, live event management, strategic management and venue operations management.
We will explore a wide variety of contemporary issues and challenges faced by managers in the hospitality sector, both corporate and non-corporate. We will often refer to news stories and latest research, or share experiences from both national and international contexts.
You will have the opportunity to learn how to apply business principles, including marketing theory and strategic management to the solution of hospitality and event management problems. We will utilise a variety of teaching and learning methods, such as problem-based exercises, discussions and presentations.

We aim to help prepare you for a career in the international hospitality industry, and at the same time, you’ll have the chance to develop both your English language skills and intercultural competency.
Blending theory and practice, it draws together your previous studies to give you the opportunity to develop your strategic knowledge and understanding in areas required by contemporary international tourism organisations.
You’ll have the opportunity to develop analytical, organisational, problem solving, interpersonal, communications and project management skills, together with an appreciation of the diversity of cultures involved in developing and managing international hospitality operations.

Your main study themes on this course are:
- Event management: We cover the core principles and practices of management, but in the context of organising events. You have the chance to develop a solid understanding of live event management and corporate social responsibility (CSR), both critically important when managing professional events.
- Business Management: Covers the principles of strategic marketing and strategic management. You should gain an appreciation of the importance of hospitality operations management and how organisations plan for adapting to a constantly changing business environment.
- Advanced English for Business: Aims to develop your English language knowledge and skills to a level where you can operate effectively and independently within the hospitality industry. You'll have the opportunity to extend your practical reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.
This course is available on a one year (entry to level 5) or two year (entry to level 6) full-time basis only.
Teaching is based on a series of lectures and workshops, typically breaking off into smaller seminar groups to discuss and debate a chosen theme or subject area. We will aim to discuss current issues in event management and regularly invite people currently working in the events industry to share their experiences and views.
Previous guest speakers have included luxury wedding planners and event designers, health and safety experts responsible for festivals, professionals from the Royal Opera House, National Events and Intelligence Unit, Pandora Events and Eventsforce. This is designed to help you to build your professional networks with a view to applying for future placements or employment (Guest speakers are subject to availability).
You will have access to Progress Coaches, who will be available to review and discuss your progress with you and offer advice throughout your time on the course.
This course will be assessed using a variety of methods which will could vary depending upon the module. Assessment methods include formal examinations, coursework, test and essays, reports, presentations.
The Coventry University Group assessment strategy ensures that our courses are fairly assessed and allows us to monitor student progression towards the achieving the intended learning outcomes. Assessments may include exams, individual assignments or group work elements.
On successful completion, you should have knowledge of:
- The holistic nature of an international business organisation.
- How to apply business principles to event venues.
- The concepts and characteristics of international events and hospitality, their products and facilities.
On successful completion, you should be able to:
- Conduct research into business problems and issues, and present the findings in an appropriate written, verbal or electronic format.
- Analyse and produce event management solutions to appropriate business decisions.
- Apply appropriate techniques to solve a range of different international business, event and hospitality management problems.
We set out below the typical teaching contact hours that you will receive on this course. Teaching contact hours will vary in different semesters and years of study and may vary due to module selection. In addition to the contact hours below, we offer the opportunity to attend additional optional sessions, including sessions with the Faculty’s progress coaches, or to meet with staff during their advice and feedback hours.
Within your first and second year of study (if applicable), you will have up to 12 contact hours of teaching a week which includes:
- Medium group teaching: Such as practical classes, workshops or seminars each week.
- Large group teaching: such as lectures each week.
If, during your course, you are undertaking a project/dissertation, there is a greater emphasis placed on independent study and therefore total contact hours may be reduced.
In addition, you will be expected to undertake a significant amount of self-directed reading, studying and revising in your own time each week.
You will have the opportunity to gain an international experience in many ways. Coventry is a multicultural university, so our diverse student and staff body is designed to help to facilitate a multicultural learning environment in which you will have the chance to share experiences with staff and students who will frequently come from many different countries. The fundamental nature of this course is also international in its outlook, studying the event and hospitality industry in different countries and cultures.
We run a number of collaborative Online International Learning (OIL) projects on the course, which aims to enable you to work with students across the world on a live project tackling a specific marketing challenge in global virtual and multicultural teams (subject to availability).

Tuition Fees
We pride ourselves on offering competitive tuition fees which we review on an annual basis and offer a wide range of scholarships to support students with their studies. Course fees are calculated on the basis of what it costs to teach each course and we aim for total financial transparency.

EU student fees
EU nationals starting in the 2020/21 academic year remain eligible for the same fees as home students and the same financial support. Financial support comes from Student Finance England, and covers undergraduate and postgraduate study for the duration of their course, providing they meet the residency requirement.
For tuition fee loans
EU nationals starting in the 2020/21 academic year must have resided in the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland for the three years prior to the start of their course. The purpose of that three year residency should not have been mainly for the purpose of receiving full time education.
For maintenance loans
EU nationals starting in the 2020/21 academic year must have resided in the UK and Islands for the five years prior to the start of their course. The purpose of that five year residency should not have been mainly for the purpose of receiving full time education.

Career prospects
Graduate Immigration Route visa
Based on current information from the UK Government, international students whose study extends beyond summer 2021 may be eligible for a visa under the UK Government’s Graduate Immigration Route, which will enable students to stay and work, or look for work, in the UK at any skill level for up to two (2) years. Check the most up to date guidance available to check your eligibility and any updates from the UK Government before making an application or enrolment decision.
The hospitality and events industries are booming and graduate prospects are excellent – there are 9.5 million workers employed in the hospitality industry within the EU alone.
From day one, the aim will be to expose you to the events industry and you will be encouraged to enhance and build your CV with practical work experience. We have provided volunteering opportunities at a number of local events organisations in the past – Fashion Live Events, Live Buzz Events, Ricoh Arena, Pandora Events, NEC, Barclaycard Arena, Local wedding venues, Coventry Blaze, Warwick Racecourse, Conference Care, as well as various charities, including Bethany’s Wish (all volunteer opportunities are subject to availability, and can be subject to a competitive application process).
Through the Business School’s dedicated employability team, you will have the support of dedicated Personal Employment Tutors, who are industry trained. The team can also support you with workshops and guidance on the various aspects of the employment process such as preparing your CV, interview practice and mock assessment centres.
