Diagnostic radiographers are at the forefront of healthcare delivery, interacting directly with service users and carers to obtain and evaluate images of skeletal and soft tissue abnormalities and injuries. These images not only aid in diagnoses but also guide direct interventional treatments and therapies.

Learn the scientific principles behind a variety of imaging methods including conventional radiography, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), radionuclide imaging (RNI) and ultrasound (US).
Gain knowledge in health-related sciences, including anatomy, physiology, medical physics, imaging technology and radiographic techniques, forming the foundation knowledge for the operation and interpretation of radiography technology.
Practice-based learning includes state-of-the-art simulation and clinical placements^2,5. Apply your theoretical knowledge to the real world in diverse practice environments such as acute, district and community services, and public, private and charitable organisations.

Imaging Science and Radiation Protection – 20 credits

This module aims to develop an understanding of the principles of radiation safety, radiation protection legislation and the fundamental scientific theories underpinning radiography. You will have the opportunity to explore the principles of radiation safety and relevant legislation to ensure a thorough understanding of best practice. The module further delves into the scientific theories governing radiation production, the interactions of radiation with matter and its implications on image production and patient safety. This knowledge will form a solid foundation for effective application in radiography and lead to a better understanding of the technical aspects of digital and mobile radiography equipment.

Radiographic Anatomy, Technique and Image Evaluation – 20 credits

This module aims to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of anatomical structures within the musculoskeletal system, chest, abdomen and pelvis. You will aim to acquire the ability to describe anatomy and translate this knowledge to your own radiographic positioning and image evaluation. The module emphasises the practical application of knowledge in radiographic positioning and the effective use of equipment for acquiring radiographic images of the appendicular skeleton, chest, and abdomen. Additionally, the module explores the principles of image evaluation and the factors that influence image quality, leading to an understanding of how radiographic techniques impact the diagnostic value of the images produced.

Placement 1: Foundations of Professional Practice – 20 credits

In this module, you will aim to integrate the knowledge and skills acquired in previous modules into clinical practice and real-world scenarios^2,5. The focus is on cultivating professional and personal conduct alongside interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills within the healthcare environment. Emphasis is placed on recognising and demonstrating these skills while supporting the delivery of high-quality patient care. The module assists in the development of fundamental clinical skills specific to diagnostic radiography that uphold the wellbeing of patients whilst ensuring the effective and compassionate provision of diagnostic imaging.

Placement 2: Developing Professional Practice – 20 credits

This module allows you to consolidate your theoretical understanding of diagnostic radiography by actively applying it to practice^2,5. During clinical placements, you will have diverse opportunities to gain hands-on experience, particularly focusing on conventional radiography. The module embeds the importance of upholding patient care, safety and compliance with current policies through collaboration with radiographers, other healthcare professionals, service users and carers. You are expected to reflect on your communication and professional attributes, attitudes and behaviours, aligning them with the standards set by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), thus supporting the achievement of quality clinical practice.

This module aims to equip you with the values, behaviours and actions essential for professional practice. Specialised Imaging Modalities – 20 credits

This module aims to provide you with an understanding of specialised imaging modalities, including ultrasound, fluoroscopy, bone densitometry, nuclear medicine, mammography and dental imaging systems. The module encourages you to evaluate the details of these imaging techniques and their scientific foundations. You will develop and apply clinical reasoning skills to justify the safest and most appropriate application of these imaging modalities, honing your ability to make informed decisions in a clinical setting. The module also addresses the critical aspects of contrast agents, requiring you to evaluate the role and safe use of different contrast agents specific to each imaging modality.

Application of Cross-Sectional Imaging Technology – 20 credits

This module aims to provide you with an understanding of cross-sectional imaging systems, specifically focusing on computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). You will be guided through the scientific principles, technical designs and processes involved in image formation for these imaging modalities. Emphasis is placed on critical assessment of the radiographer's role in the safe and effective application of CT and MRI, encouraging you to navigate the complexities of these technologies with a keen awareness of patient safety and diagnostic efficacy. The module provides you with opportunities to apply knowledge of anatomy and image evaluation to cross-sectional imaging.

Image Interpretation and Pathophysiology – 20 credits

This module aims to provide you with a holistic understanding of human physiology, focusing on its connection to common pathologies affecting various body systems. You will aim to develop the critical analysis skills of evaluating normal and pathological radiographic appearances and interpreting medical imaging findings. The module addresses the medico-legal responsibilities of preliminary image evaluation and image reporting, emphasising the role of radiographers and their collaboration with other healthcare professionals.

Placement 3: Fundamental Professional Practice – 20 credits

This module focuses on the comprehensive evaluation of the radiographer's role in delivering evidence-based, patient-centred, high-quality care^2,5. The module delves into the critical evaluation of radiography clinical practice, encompassing professionalism, communication, interpersonal skills and patient care. Reflective practices are encouraged to facilitate professional development, allowing you to scrutinise and enhance your performance in these essential aspects of radiography.

Placement 4: Elective Professional Practice – 20 credits

This module aims to provide you with the opportunity to gain specialist radiography professional practice experience through an elective placement component^2,5, encouraging you to autonomously manage your radiographic practice. The module instils a critical approach towards radiography clinical practice, prompting you to evaluate various facets, including technique, radiation protection, safety measures, communication, teamwork, patient care and professionalism.

This module explores methods of enquiry utilised in daily practice. You will aim to develop your ability to analyse the knowledge, theory and practice-based evidence within health and care. This module will explore how daily inquiry methods can be transformed into more systematic approaches to data collection and analysis. You'll examine quantitative and qualitative research, evaluation and audit techniques. Through exploration and debate, you will aim to develop an appreciation of interdisciplinary and profession-specific evidence and how to use this learning within the practice context.

This module aims to ensure you are well-prepared to contribute to the continuous improvement of diagnostic radiography, ensuring adherence to established quality standards and also the readiness to embrace and integrate evolving technologies for enhanced patient care. You will have the opportunity to perform and analyse a range of quality control tests and measurements essential for maintaining high standards in diagnostic imaging. You will delve into the scientific principles underpinning emerging advances in diagnostic imaging technology, enabling you to evaluate the potential applications and implications of these innovations. The module explores the radiographer's role in upholding quality standards, and emerging diagnostic imaging technologies.

This module aims to prepare you to navigate the complexities of service delivery and understand your pivotal role in shaping and enhancing radiography practice within the broader healthcare framework. By analysing healthcare policies, systems and structures, you'll aim to gain insight into their profound influence on radiography practice, service delivery and overall development. The module emphasises critical evaluation skills, encouraging you to assess imaging investigations within clinical and screening pathways. This includes justifying associated clinical and imaging protocols and fostering an in-depth comprehension of the rationale behind diagnostic decisions, whilst exploring the diagnostic radiographer's role and influence on quality care and service delivery.

This module aims to prepare you to develop as an autonomous radiographer through the critical evaluation and implementation of knowledge and skills acquired throughout previous modules^2,5. You are expected to demonstrate proficiency in communication with members of the multi-disciplinary team, service users and carers, showcasing leadership responsibilities. The module highlights the importance of personal and professional development through high-quality reflective practice, self-management and mentorship. By critically evaluating your own growth and practices, you will aim to enhance your capabilities as a diagnostic radiographer while contributing positively to the broader healthcare team.

Placement 6: Transition to Autonomous Practice – 20 credits

The module aims to equip you to meet the professional standards of a registered radiographer outlined by the HCPC and the SoR^2,5. Throughout the module, you will aim to demonstrate your ability to undertake the role of an independent, autonomous and reflective clinician in a way that reflects the practice of a newly qualified radiographer.

You will aim to be able to practise effectively and safely in a range of modality areas. Demonstrating evidence-based practice and leadership within conventional radiography, you'll aim to effectively integrate the professional and interpersonal skills acquired during the course. You will explore sustainability and embrace the critical role of lifelong learning and continuing professional development (CPD) in practising to the highest standards within your scope of practice.

Leading for the Future as a Health and Care Professional – 20 credits

Our health and care workforce is required to lead the delivery of high-quality care, whilst navigating a complex health and social care ecosystem. This module aims to foster confident and accountable leadership through an interprofessional learning experience. By collaborating with colleagues from different backgrounds, you'll explore fresh perspectives and analyse contemporary theory, practice and evidence to redefine leadership for yourself. The module aims to foster your development as a reflective leader.

The Evidence-based Practitioner: Professional Project – 20 credits

In this module, you'll aim to critically evaluate, interpret and apply the latest national and international research to improve care. You'll aim to develop the skills to analyse, safely use and share these findings, ultimately shaping best practices in your field. This module also aims to equip you with the skills to conduct an independent study. We'll support you as you develop your research and communication abilities, empowering you to share your findings with healthcare professionals, policymakers and the public.

How you'll learn

We understand that everyone learns differently, so this course will consist of structured teaching sessions which may include:

Teaching contact hours

As a full-time undergraduate student, you will study modules totalling 120 credits each academic year. A typical 20 credit module requires a total of 200 hours study. This is made up of teaching contact hours, guided and independent study.

Teaching hours:

Teaching hours vary each semester, year of study and due to module selection. During your first year you can expect 15-18 teaching hours each week. You will also have the option to attend optional sessions including time with a progress coach or to meet with staff for advice and feedback. As you progress through your studies, teaching hours may reduce.

Practice-based learning:

Practice-based learning forms an essential and significant part of your learning experience. Practice hours will differ between placements and different health and care courses. You will have access to university staff, but should expect to spend the majority of your contact time with practice collaborators undertaking placement activity. Overall, the hours you undertake in practice-based learning will need to satisfy the eligibility requirements set by the professional body regulating the profession, the HCPC. No less than 1162 practice-based hours gained from a combination of placement and simulated learning will need to be completed over the course of your degree.

Guided and independent study:

Throughout your studies, you will be expected to spend time in guided and independent study to make up the required study hours per module. You'll be digging deeper into topics, review what you've learnt and complete assignments. This can be completed around your personal commitments. As you progress through your studies, you'll spend more time in independent study.

Online learning:

As an innovative university, we use different teaching methods including online tools and emerging technologies. So, some of your teaching hours and assessments may be delivered online.

The University will charge the tuition fees that are stated in the above table for the first Academic Year of study. The University will review tuition fees each year. For UK (home) students, if Parliament permits an increase in tuition fees, the university may increase fees for each subsequent year of study in line with any such changes. The rights of Irish residents to study in the UK are preserved under the Common Travel Area arrangement. If you are an Irish student and meet the residency criteria, you can study in England, pay the same level of tuition fees as English students and utilise the Tuition Fee Loan.

**EU Support Bursary

Following the UK's exit from the European Union, we are offering financial support to all eligible EU students who wish to study an undergraduate or a postgraduate degree with us full-time. This bursary will be used to offset the cost of your tuition fees to bring them in line with that of UK students. Students studying a degree with a foundation year with us are not eligible for the bursary.

How do you know if you need to pay UK or international tuition fees?

We carry out an initial fee status assessment based on the information you provide in your application. Your fee status determines your tuition fees, and what financial support and scholarships may be available to you. The rules about who pays UK (home) or international (overseas) fees for higher education courses in England are set by the Department for Education. The regulations identify all the different categories of student who can insist on paying the home rate. The regulations can be difficult to understand, so the UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) has provided fee status guidance to help you identify whether you are eligible to pay the home or overseas rate.

If you meet all the criteria required by any one category, including any residence requirements, your institution must charge you the home rate. You only need to find one category that you fit into.

Our multi-million-pound Alison Gingell Building⁴ features a range of mock healthcare settings, including hospital wards, ambulance and operating theatre, as well as an x-ray suite and a computer lab for image viewing, giving you the opportunity to replicate real-life situations before you go on placement.

You will have the opportunity to practice radiographic imaging using our fully functioning x-ray room that simulates the clinical environment, combined with a diagnostic radiography phantom that mimics human anatomy. Our suite also contains twenty image viewing workstations to support students in learning radiographic anatomy, pathology and image interpretation.

Our two full-size community homes can be used for sessions simulating working with patients outside of a hospital setting.

We have set up our specialist facility to simulate real-life hospital surgery. It includes all the equipment needed to train effective operating department practitioners.

Throughout the course you will be given the opportunity to develop knowledge of health-related sciences as well as exploring patient interaction, care and protection. You will have clinical practice placements every year, enabling you to put theory into practice^2,5.

The University will charge the tuition fees that are stated in the above table for the first Academic Year of study. The University will review tuition fees each year. For Home Students, if Parliament permit an increase in tuition fees, the University may increase fees for each subsequent year of study in line with any such changes. Note that any increase is expected to be in line with inflation.

For International Students, we may increase fees each year but such increases will be no more than 5% above inflation. If you defer your course start date or have to extend your studies beyond the normal duration of the course (e.g. to repeat a year or resit examinations) the University reserves the right to charge you fees at a higher rate and/or in accordance with any legislative changes during the additional period of study.

⁴Facilities

Facilities are subject to availability. Due to the ongoing restrictions relating to COVID-19, some facilities (including some teaching and learning spaces) may vary from those advertised and may have reduced availability or restrictions on their use.

⁵Placements

Satisfactory health clearance and enhanced criminal record disclosure is also required. As part of the health clearance checks, you will be required to provide information about your immunity and vaccination status. The information you provide will be used to determine your eligibility to go on placement(s). Placements are provided at the placement provider’s discretion. The University is, therefore, unable to guarantee the provision of placements or the location and type of placement offered.

⁶NHS payment

The rules may be subject to review by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) in the future and as a result may change. Please therefore check the NHSBSA website for up-to-date information before applying.

Student Contract

By accepting your offer of a place and enrolling with us, a Student Contract will be formed between you and the university. A copy of the current 2024/2025 contract is available on the website for information purposes however the 2025/2026 contract will apply for the 2025/2026 intake. The Contract details your rights and the obligations you will be bound by during your time as a student and contains the obligations that the university will owe to you. You should read the Contract before you accept an offer of a place and before you enrol at the university.
