Overview

This course aims to explore what makes people commit crime and to identify the factors which may predict criminal behaviour.

Psychology is the study of approaches that explain people’s thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Criminal Psychology explores human behaviour with a criminal focus by engaging with theories and application of psychological perspectives, methods and techniques.

This course aims to provide you with a core knowledge of psychology in order to confer eligibility for the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership* with the British Psychological Society, as well as developing your understanding of how psychology is specifically applied to criminal contexts.

Throughout your studies, we aim to demonstrate how psychology is applied to real life and how to select, use and report appropriate psychological methods and research techniques.

Overview

In years one and two, you will learn about research methods and the statistical analyses that researchers use.

Modules

  • Developing as a Forensic Psychologist 1

    This module introduces a course based strategy to develop students’ skills and professional identity throughout the course, focusing on student academic journey. Through the Academic Personal Tutor system and employability focus, the module aims to develop the student’s academic and transferable skills and principles of reflective practice to facilitate their development. In addition, it is designed to equip students with a range of essential personal and professional skills that are required to be a successful student and graduate employee. Students work to identify their existing skills and their personal development needs and these are augmented with a range of transferable and applied skills.

  • Psychological Approaches to Crime

    The module is designed to provide students with an overview of key themes in psychology and forensic psychology from historical, theoretical, and applied perspectives. The expertise students develop in this module will provide the framework required to understand how different theoretical and methodological approaches in psychology link together. The module will enable students to explore how these approaches contribute to understanding of human behaviour in context of a range of criminal activities and events. This module aims to provide a theme-based approach to key concepts and theories relating to psychology and crime. Themes, for example, could include: Emotional development; Self-regulation; Social Identity; Cognitive development, Context and culture, Interpersonal relationships; Maladaptive behaviour; Aggression. Sub-themes included within each of these overarching categories will reflect the contemporary subjects relating psychology and crime.

  • International Perspectives on Crime

    The module focuses on global crime issues with a focus on how psychology can explain the underlying reasons for crime and support tackling such challenges. Students will be introduced to a range of national and international crime types (such as mass market fraud and trafficking) which represent significant challenges to law enforcement. Relevant psychological theory and literature will be used to explain the prevalence and motivations for this offending. Mechanisms by which offenders operate internationally will also be discussed. Attention will be paid to national and international criminal justice systems and how they work together (or not) to prevent, investigate, and prosecute offenders. Historical and contemporary themes will be considered and individual topics may change each year as new global issues emerge.

  • Investigating Psychological Approaches to Crime

    How does forensic psychology work as a scientific discipline? How can we draw reliable inferences about the human mind by observing human behaviour? This module provides an introduction to the various experimental and non-experimental research methodologies utilised by psychologists, as well as the basic descriptive and inferential statistics commonly used in psychological research. The module focuses on the skills and knowledge required to design, conduct, summarise, evaluate, and present psychological research. This will involve instruction on literature searching, referencing, scientific report writing, interpretation of statistical analyses and critiquing of research designs. The module will draw upon three of the contemporary topic areas introduced in the Psychological Approaches to Crime module and explore these further by giving students the opportunity to conduct and write-up a series of experiments.

  • Psychology, Crime and Culture

    This module aims to investigate the popular perception of psychology and crime. A range of portrayals of psychology and crime in the popular media will be explored. The module aims to demonstrate how psychological ideas are used to explain crime and how it is portrayed in popular media such as newspapers, magazines, film, TV and on the Internet. Subject matter is drawn from different areas of psychology and forensic psychology. The module aims to highlight how psychology and criminology has been viewed when applied to explaining crime. The module will also critically investigate the more complex reality behind these “pop” portrayals of psychology in explaining crime. The content, and the presentation, have been developed in order to introduce both academic and independent study skills in a supportive, directed and developing environment.

In year two, you will be required to complete work experience with an external organisation and learn about research methods and the statistical analyses that researchers use.

  • Developing as a Forensic Psychologist 2

    This module aims to enable students to build on skills relevant to employability in a career as a Forensic Psychologist. This module will provide students with the practical skills (e.g. time management, CV writing, cover letters and interviewing techniques) needed to obtain work experience relevant to Forensic Psychology. Students will be introduced to resources such as Employability Support Team (EST) and career services to aid in identifying a Forensic Psychology related work placement. The module is unique in that it builds upon the academic skills students have learned in various psychology and criminology related modules, and teaches them how best to showcase these skills to promote their career and further academic development. This module will enable students to market themselves creatively and effectively to consider a diverse range of employment opportunities thereby creating their own career narrative and shaping the future direction of the profession. The module aims to develop in students a critical awareness of their own developmental needs and develop and enhance skills relating to employability in the field of forensic psychology.

  • Psychological Perspectives on Crime 1

    This module takes a thematic approach to understanding core psychological perspectives on crime and will consider a variety of topics under the ‘hat’ of core areas. Students will gain knowledge of psychological theory and perspectives on crime, integrating and applying their knowledge of BPS core areas. Several themes will be considered across the module delivery. Themes will be contemporary, of global significance (e.g. addiction) and may change in any given year to remain contemporary.

  • Applied Research Methods 1

    This module aims to integrate knowledge gained in the psychological perspectives of crime (1) module with the application of quantitative research methods. Students will have the opportunity to gain an understanding of how to conduct, report, and interpret a range of statistical tests using data associated with complex experimental and correlational designs. This module builds on students' level 1 research methods module.

  • Psychological Perspectives on Crime 2

    This module continues the development of students’ understanding of core psychological perspectives on crime from the module Psychological Perspectives on Crime (1). The module will consider a variety of topics under the core domains and through theoretical exploration, students will learn to integrate key psychological perspectives on crime, integrating and applying their knowledge of British Psychological Society (BPS) core areas. The consideration of how this knowledge could contribute to solving a community based issue will be explored. In addition it tasks students with developing an output designed to solve an issue identified by external community based organisations in association with psychology staff. Students will be required to examine individual and group responses to the issues presented by drawing on knowledge and understanding of key topics within each of the core domains.

  • Applied Research Methods 2

    The module aims to integrate knowledge gained in theory focused modules with the application of qualitative research methods. Students will develop their understanding of how to design, conduct, and report qualitative research using a variety of data collection methods and analytical techniques. This module also aims to develop students' ability to plan psychological research projects and guide them through the fundamental processes involved in developing and disseminating a research proposal (e.g., conceptual, methodological, and ethical considerations).

  • Professional Experience

    This module is designed to provide students with the opportunity to gain work experience in an organisation relevant to their future career aspirations. Work experience in an applied area or related domain, or in another field aligned with the students' future career aspirations may be in the form of paid employment or voluntary work. Students will gain experience of researching and sourcing their own work experience. They will be able to draw upon the module Developing as a Forensic Psychologist at Level 1 to help prepare them for sourcing, negotiating, and carrying out approved work experience. Their work experience in turn will provide students with an important opportunity to reflect on their personal and professional development as part of Developing as a Forensic Psychologist.

Overview

By your final year, you will have been taught how to design and conduct your own research. You will then do this and analyse and present your results in the form of an independent project in an area of your choice.

  • Developing as a Forensic Psychologist 3

    This module is designed to equip students with a range of essential personal and professional skills that are required to be a successful student and graduate employee. This module will concentrate on finalising the student journey and development. Students will have the opportunity to appraise and critique their own skills and develop a wide range of skills which will effectively prepare them to succeed on their course. The module workshops/seminars aim to develop in students a critical awareness of their own developmental needs and develop and enhance skills. This module will support the development of a number of skills such as: researching the forensic psychological field; writing and speaking fluently; working in groups; reflecting upon their work; and presenting their work both orally and in writing. Students will also be assigned tasks which will encourage them to solve problems and handle and analyse factual information.

  • Independent Research Project

    This module is the focal point of the student’s Psychological training: knowledge of research methods and theory should combine in order to pursue an in-depth supervised independent piece of empirical research. Students will develop and demonstrate skills in report writing to meet the professional standards of psychology. This module also enables students to develop a critical understanding of psychological research methodology. Students are not permitted to conduct research in NHS settings, because of the NHS Research Governance rules.

  • Project Ethics

    This module starts the process that will be the focal point of the student’s psychological training i.e. knowledge of research methods and theory should combine in order to pursue an in-depth supervised independent piece of empirical research. In this module students will design a suitable empirical research project that incorporates an appropriately expressed psychological research question. Students will identify and propose suitable research methods to address the proposed research question. Students will undertake and complete an online Coventry University research ethics application. Students are not permitted to conduct research in health or forensic settings, because of the NHS Research Governance and Her Majesty’s Prison Service (HMPS) rules.

You will spend a significant proportion of your first two years studying the key areas of psychology, including:

All of our Psychology degrees are taught using a mixture of lectures, small group seminars and practical, ‘hands-on’ skills workshops. Core course content will be delivered during the lectures, while the associated seminars and workshops offer opportunities for you to explore topics more independently, receive guidance on coursework assignments, begin to apply your knowledge and develop your academic and transferable skills.  

You will have the chance to take part in, design, conduct and analyse the results of psychological experiments, using specialist equipment and computer software, and spend time working collaboratively on group projects with other students.  

In addition, your Academic Personal Tutor will be available for one-to-one bookable meetings throughout every semester and will regularly review and discuss your progress and continual personal development. Outside of contact time, your personal study hours will be guided by materials posted on your module web pages.

This course will be assessed using a variety of methods which will could vary depending upon the module. Assessment methods include coursework and formal exams.

This course is predominantly assessed by coursework.

The Coventry University Group assessment strategy ensures that our courses are fairly assessed and allows us to monitor student progression towards the achieving the intended learning outcomes. Assessments may include exams, individual assignments or group work elements. 

On successful completion, you should be able to: 

Identify and evaluate general patterns in behaviour, psychological functioning and experience. 

Understand and investigate the role of brain function in aspects of human behaviour and experience. 

Carry out empirical studies involving a variety of methods of data collection, including experiments, observation, psychometric tests, questionnaires, interviews and field studies. 

Employ evidence-based reasoning and use a variety of psychological tools, including specialist software, laboratory equipment and psychometric instruments. 

Apply your knowledge of psychological research and theory to analyse real-world problems and develop evidence-based solutions. 

Critically evaluate research evidence, including statistical information, and use this to draw conclusions about the validity of different claims and arguments. 

Communicate in a confident, professional manner, both verbally and in writing.

In a typical teaching week you will have up to 14 ‘contact’ hours of teaching. This generally breaks down as:

  • Personal tutorial/small group teaching/one to one supervision: meetings are arranged on a mutual basis as necessary.
  • Medium group teaching: up to 6 hours of practical workshops or seminars each week.
  • Large group teaching: up to 8 hours of lectures each week.

Contact hours will vary by stage and semester of course and any options chosen.

You will be given the opportunity to study abroad for a year in a European university, in between years two and three of your course. This would be additional study and would provide you with an international experience, which can be viewed favourably by potential employers.

We have links with 20 universities across Europe. These are largely English speaking but there is the opportunity to learn and attend courses in a foreign language. In your year away you would not be charged fees and would expect to receive a contribution to living expenses through the Erasmus programme.

Unconditional offers

We want to recruit the best students to Coventry and having assessed applicants' past, current and predicted performance and commitment to the course we feel that it is appropriate to reward consistently high-achieving students with an unconditional offer from Coventry University. It is a commitment from us with regard to an applicants’ potential as an excellent undergraduate and we hope that this will encourage such applicants to join the Coventry community. Personal statements and references will also be taken into account and, for some degree courses, an interview will form part of the assessment. The criteria for unconditional offers will vary across the University as entry requirements for specific courses differ and not all degree courses will be taking part in the Scheme.

We will consider other qualifications for a pre-result unconditional offer providing that you have an appropriate proven performance at GCSE (or equivalent) level and predicted grades in line with grades that we expect to see at A-level. Other qualifications that we may consider for a pre-result unconditional offer include: The International Baccalaureate Diploma, BTEC Level 3 qualifications, Cambridge Pre-U and combinations of qualifications (e.g. BTECS plus A-levels).

An unconditional offer is what it says it is. So, if you don’t meet your predictions then your place at Coventry is still guaranteed. However, we would hope and expect that you continue to work hard to make the most of your potential and be best prepared to study at university level.

We can’t but our experience over the years has shown us that students with a track record of high grades and excellent predictions are very likely to achieve those grades. Our assessment takes into account all elements of your application to allow us to take a holistic view of your potential. There is also the opportunity to apply to one of the Coventry University Scholarships if you achieve the required grades so there is a financial incentive to aim high. Unconditional offers are only made to individuals who have demonstrated their commitment so we believe their focus and determination is unlikely to waver in the final stages of their qualifications.

EU student fees

Our courses have been designed to provide practical work experience and equip you with a range of skills and competencies that will set you apart from other graduates and make you attractive to potential employers, such as group work, literature reviewing, critical analysis and the delivery of oral presentations.

 As well as the work experience module delivered in Year Two and option to spend a sandwich year on placement, we offer a module developing professional skills to our final year students. This aims to help you learn how to identify suitable employment and training opportunities after graduation, submit competitive, professional applications and perform well in interview situations. 

Our degree provides a route into many careers, both within and outside the field of psychology. With further training, you may choose to become a qualified psychologist, pursuing a career in the community as, for example, an occupational, forensic or social psychologist; in mental wellbeing as a clinical or counselling psychologist; in physical wellbeing as a health, sport or neuropsychologist; working with children as a developmental or educational psychologist. The interpersonal and analytical skills of psychologists are in demand by employers in the private sector, police, military and charitable organisations, among others.

The University will charge the tuition fees that are stated on the course webpage and in the prospectus for the first year of study. The University will review tuition fees each year. For UK and EU students, if Parliament permit an increase in tuition fees, the University may increase fees for each subsequent year of study in line with any such changes. Note that any increase for UK and EU Students is expected to be in line with inflation. For international students, the University may increase fees for each subsequent year of study but such increases will be no more than 5% above inflation.
