Modules

Overview

This course includes the Professional Development module. Each of the participating postgraduate courses have an individually tailored version of the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) Professional Development module.

Modules

  • Global Professional Development (GPD)

    • As technology brings us closer together, organisations of all sizes have people working internationally and remotely across different time-zones. To meet this changing environment the skills of leaders and managers must also change. Employers are looking for individuals with the ability to work across different cultures, have the ability to manage teams and possess problem solving and critical analysis skills. Developed in partnership with the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), the Professional Development modules use a variety of techniques to give students the practical leadership skills to critically evaluate and develop solutions to complex, inter-related, multi-faceted issues that you will experience in organisations.
  • Master’s dissertation

The culmination of your studies, the dissertation is designed to improve your ability to investigate strategies, gather and analyse evidence, then make sound conclusions and strategic recommendations within a management context. With guidance from an experienced supervisor, you will research a complex management or legal problem on a subject of your choice related to HRM, normally in the organisation within which you work. You will then be required to produce a 12,000-word dissertation. Previous students have researched myriad subject matters, ranging from employee relations and employee engagement to developing in-house training programmes and performance management strategies.

In more detail...

  • Opportunity to expand your professional network – course attracts participants from local, national and global organisations.
  • The Business School is an active member of The European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD), the most important European Business School Association, as well as the Association of Business Schools (ABS).
  • Supported by both a Personal Academic Tutor and a designated Employment Personal Tutor (EPT) to work with you throughout your course. All our EPTs have previously worked in industry and have experience of being a recruiter; they understand the labour market, the skills employers look for and the processes used by employers to select candidates.
  • Our annual HR Leaders’ Events provide an opportunity to hear first-hand about recent developments in the HR profession from current practitioners, which have previously included the PSA Peugeot Citroen Group Director of HR, New Talent and Technical Development Programme Manager from Severn Trent Water and the Associate Director of HR (Operations) from University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire speaking with students about change management.
82%

of students on our postgraduate ‘Management’ programmes are satisfied with their skills development, above the sector average of 80% in the Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey (PTES) 2016.

On this course, you will study two mandatory modules part-time and attend several planned sessions spread over six months, starting in October of each year, completing in May and graduating in June.

The programme is normally undertaken by students who are currently working in industry, so flexible teaching is designed to fit around personal and professional commitments. Sessions will typically take place on Saturdays, and last the whole day from 9am to 4pm.

Teaching comprises teaching methods for the discerning student – whilst teaching includes typical lecture format, it focuses more on debate and discussion, often student led.

The teaching team includes staff with significant experience of working in industry and teaching a wide range of subject matters. Many remain research active, their expertise in exciting areas such as new ways of working, diversity management, multicultural teams, identity, HR professionalisation, the organisation of change and the changing nature of management, organisational psychology and organisational behaviour.

You will complete a dissertation and an online portfolio.

You must undertake and pass both modules. You will develop an Online Portfolio over three months and a 12,000 word dissertation.

On successful completion, you should be able to:

  • Critically examine the strategic role of the Human Resource function in contributing to an organisation’s improved performance.
  • Undertake primary research to address a ‘live’ human resource or business issue.
  • Exercise sound judgements in the selection of different methods and approaches for research to support decision making.
  • Solve problems and demonstrate decision-making skills using appropriate quantitative and qualitative techniques.
  • Evaluate and present reasoned arguments in relation to your findings within various business contexts.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing using a range of media which are widely used in business, such as presentations, email, business reports and professional use of social media.

Teaching is conducted over a six-month period, including approximately six full days (normally Saturdays). Additionally, you will have access to your supervisor to assist you directly in your dissertation.

International case studies, shared experiences from practising HR professionals.
