An insight into the games industry

Coventry University students looking to break into the games industry had the opportunity to attend a guest lecture by prominent 3D games artist Alex Beddows, held at the Faculty of Engineering, Environment and Computing in February 2020.

Alex is currently the lead artist at Dekagon game art studio and 3D learning manager at Artstation. He also hosts the Game Dev Discussion Podcast, which provides a wealth of learning resources and discussions amongst the game artist community.

Alex has several years of experience as an artist and has worked for a range of indie, mobile and AAA products.

The ability to learn from Alex, who is active in the recruitment process, should help students to better understand the requirements and high expectations current employers are looking for. In addition to his talk, Alex hosted 1-2-1 feedback sessions with students to look at their work. These sessions were a unique chance for students to explore how they could make improvements to their work, and how to access resources that will benefit them as they develop.

Guest speakers coming onto campus can be a great way to give our students first-hand insights into their chosen industry. They can provide valuable insights into how best to prepare for the graduate market, with an emphasis on building lasting relationships within the gaming community.

Feedback has shown that students benefit hugely from these initial conversations, as they provide a wealth of knowledge from industry, guiding their personal development towards their employability goals.

Previous guest lecturers have included former graduates, representatives from Rare Studios, and Grads in Games, an initiative run by Aardvark Swift - a leading recruitment company for the games industry.
