As a fascinating and complex expression of contemporary society, tourism has experienced continued growth and ‎diversification to become one of the fastest growing economic sectors. Yet this growth is one which must be properly managed, in order to ensure positive socio- economic, cultural and environmental impacts, where new tourism services and markets are developed in a responsible and sustainable manner.

This final year course, aimed at students from outside the UK, enables you to top-up your existing qualification to a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree and incorporates the advanced study of business English. Studied full-time over one year, this course aims to develop the managerial skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in this fast changing and challenging industry.

This course will provide you with a comprehensive knowledge and up-to-date perspective on how tourism is managed in an international context.

The fascinating complexity of the international tourism sector requires trained professionals, who are creative, sensitive and attentive to the world around them, with an ability to manage global networks and to promptly recognize and manage business environment opportunistic and threatening risks. 

You will explore a wide variety of issues and challenges faced by managers in the tourism sector. Teaching  is grounded in reflecting on contemporary tourism events and the  latest research, together with  sharing experiences from local, national and international contexts. These issues can range from exploring sustainable development, international travel and global security, or how the tourism and  hospitality sectors are being changed by new technologies. To further enhance the teaching and learning experience, we look to develop various links and partnerships with international institutions and practitioners from all around the world, to help support various problem based and simulator exercices.

Our main study themes are:

  • Global tourism: We explore tourism from a variety of perspectives, including sustainable tourism development, the influence of new technologies, emerging destinations, global security, tourism development in developing countries, and encourage an integrative and systematic approach to strategic development for the various sectors of the industry. The focus is on applying the principles of business to the world of international tourism – environmental scanning, analysis and the strategy development process.

  • International tourism marketing: Explores the strategic marketing management process, as well as techniques used to evaluate the dynamic nature of tourism market demand and identify competitive advantage. We cover related theories of consumer behaviour with respect to the tourism industry, including the management of service quality and customer satisfaction.

  • International HRM: You should gain a critical understanding of the skills required of managers to manage people and how those skills are implemented to improve business operations within the tourism industry. We will also cover the strategic human resource planning and personnel practices required to ensure future business success.

  • Academic English for International Business: Aims to develop your English language knowledge and skills to a level where you can operate effectively and independently within the international tourism industry. The emphasis is on extending your practical reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.

This course is available on a one-year full-tlme basis only. 

Teaching is based on a combination of classroom and sern!nar-based activities, In which we will break off into smaller groups to discuss and debate a chosen theme or topic, such as mass tourism or extreme environments, for example. 

We invite people currently working ln tourism industry, such as tour operators, destination planners, hotel managers, practltloners from tourism related sectors, to share their experiences and views. Thls is designed to help you to build your professional networks with a view to applying for future placements or employment. 

Your academic personal tutor (APT) will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for advice the roughout your time on the course. 

This course will be assessed using a variety of methods which will could vary depending upon the module. Assessment methods include formal examinations, coursework, reports, essays, presentations, case studies and portfolios.

The Coventry University Group assessment strategy ensures that our courses are fairly assessed and allows us to monitor student progression towards the achieving the intended learning outcomes. Assessments may include exams, individual assignments or group work elements.

On successful completion, you should have knowledge of: 

  • The established and emerging tourism theories, principles, and concepts in an international context.
  • The role of tourism in the economy, society, culture, and sustainability of tourism destinations globally. 
  • The key concepts from management disciplines (strategy, financial management, human resources and marketing) that support the management and operations of tourism in an international context. 
  • Research techniques and relevant sources of information used to investigate and analyse international tourism. 
  • The relationship between the production, supply and consumption of a range of consumer goods and services with respect to international tourism. 
  • The nature, characteristics and behaviour of tourist consumers and the emerging patterns of tourism demand globally. 

On successful completion, you should be able to: 

  • Source, analyse and apply appropriate information to support tourism management decision making. 
  • Analyse, synthesise, summarise and evaluate data sets and information salient to international tourism management. 
  • Communicate ideas and findings effectively In a range of formats to different audiences appropriate to international tourism contexts. 
  • Work effectively, Independently and In cross-cultural teams, demonstrating adaptability to change and meeting deadlines. 
  • Conduct research into business problems and issues, and present the findings in an appropriate written, verbal or electronic format. 
  • Apply creative and innovative techniques to solve tourism related problems. 

In a typical teaching week, you will have up to 15 'contact' hours of teachlng. This generally breaks down as: 

  • Personal tutorial/small group teaching: up to 3 hours of industry contact, field visits, personal mentoring and surgery hours
  • Medium group teaching: 6 hours of seminars and work
  • Large group teaching: 6 hours of lectures each week

In addition, you will be expected to undertake a further 22 hours of self-directed studying and revising in your own time, including some guided study using handouts and online activities.

There are opportunities to gain an international experience in many ways. Coventry is a multicultural university, so our diverse student and staff body helps to facilitate a multicultural learning environment in which you will share experiences with staff and students from many different countries. However, the fundamental nature of this course is international in its outlook, studying the tourism industry as It affects different countries and cultures. 

We run a number of collaborative Online International Learning (OIL) projects on the course, which enables students on the project to work with students across the world on a live project tackling a specific marketing challenge in global virtual and multicultural teams. In the past, students have worked alongside EU students as part of a week-long case study in Holland. 

There are also opportunities to attend an international field trip that emphasises intercultural engagement and group working. Subsidised by the University, this is likely to include a visit to one of the School's strategic international partners, located in countries including Malaysia, China, Hong Kong, and the USA to experience the global impacts of tourism directly.

Career prospects

The rising economic influence of middle-income economies and previously less developed countries all point to a future in which tourism is set to increase, however tourism needs to be managed responsibly and professionally.

The in-depth knowledge, critical evaluation and analysis skills developed on the course are designed to prepare graduates for management positions much demanded by the international tourism industry.

You will have the support of dedicated Personal Employment Tutors. The employment unit can also support you with workshops and guidance on the various aspects of the employment process such as preparing your CV, interview practice and mock assessment centres. 

Where our graduates work

Successful completion of the course can open a wide range of careers in destination management and marketing, accommodation, arts, culture and heritage, transport and tourism. Employers can include tour operators, travel agencies, airlines, cruises, tourist attractions, heritage sites, conference organisers and hoteliers.

Graduates on our 3 year tourism degree courses have gone on to occupy positions within a variety of national and international companies, including The Royal Opera House, Live Buzz Events, Ricoh Arena, Chelsea Football Club Events Team, Gordon Ramsey Events, Pandora Events, Conference Care, and Virgin Media Pioneers.


By accepting your offer of a place and enrolling with us, a Student Contract will be formed between you and the University. A copy of the 19/20 Contract can be found here. The Contract details your rights and the obligations you will be bound by during your time as a student and contains the obligations that the University will owe to you. You should read the Contract before you accept an offer of a place and before you enrol at the University.

The University will charge the tuition fees that are stated on the course webpage and in the prospectus for the first year of study. The University will review tuition fees each year. For UK and EU students, if Parliament permit an increase in tuition fees, the University may increase fees for each subsequent year of study in line with any such changes. Note that any increase for UK and EU Students is expected to be in line with inflation. For international students, the University may increase fees for each subsequent year of study but such increases will be no more than 5% above inflation.
