Course information

Historically a classroom-based delivery, the on-campus version of this course has been running since 2007. It enjoys an excellent reputation, with many students enrolling on the basis of professional recommendations.

This course now offers students the option to study online. It is designed to give you the knowledge, skills and competencies necessary to fulfil duties that fall upon organisations in the UK and internationally, and aims to prepare you for known and emergent risks. It aims to equip you with skills to deliver more effective responses to realised risks and threats, and plan and implement successful recovery strategies.

1st

The 1st and only UK University to partner with FutureLearn to offer full degree courses in this way.

In more detail...

The course is primarily designed to be studied part-time by students currently in employment.

To be awarded a masters degree you must successfully complete modules worth 180 credits. All content will be delivered through a flexible model where students choose the number of modules they will study across a given academic term. Each 13 week term is comprised of 5 sets of 2 week blocks of learning (e.g. 5 x 2 weeks) with the remainder of the term used for assessment (e.g. 3 weeks).

For each module we will provide engaging video lectures and a variety of interactive content and activities. The online contact between lecturers and colleagues will help you stay motivated and committed to learning.

This online course allows busy professionals to fit their studies into other commitments, and maximise work-study balance.

Mixed assessment modes offer students a range of opportunities to demonstrate their achievement of the learning outcomes. You will be assessed online, by watching videos, reading articles, doing tests and completing assignments online.

You will have to submit a working paper that synthesises academic and sector perspectives, in order to professionally present findings and recommendations that meet the university's ethical requirements.

On successful completion, you should be able to:

  • Comprehensively evaluate risk, its components and influencing factors, approaches to assessment, prioritisation and role in planning, managing and recovering from crises and emergencies.
  • Apply a detailed knowledge of policy and approaches for mitigating, preparing for, managing and recovering from emergencies or crises for responding agencies and organisations and affected communities.
  • Demonstrate a thorough comprehension of approaches to assessing complexity and interaction and developing, monitoring and evaluating resilience in processes, systems, organisations and communities at risk from known and emergent threats in a sustainable way.
  • Analyse multi-stakeholder engagement, communication, co-operation and governance in all aspects of policy and strategy development, implementation and management at all scales.
  • Manage information, evaluate uncertainty, ambiguity and complexity in knowledge, method and management, and make appropriate and defensible decisions.
  • Apply critical awareness of issues and challenges at the forefront of research and practice in emergencies and resilience.
  • Evaluate and use appropriate methods of enquiry and analysis, and progress good practice in the discipline over the course of their career.
  • Demonstrate the skills demanded to research, evaluate high level material in order to produce an independent working paper that meets ethical requirements of the university, synthesises both academic and sector perspectives and presents findings and recommendations in a professional way.

Each 15 credit module will consist of 150 hours activities. The activity time will be made up of a mixture of guided and self-guided study.  Students will have access to an experienced team of tutors and lecturers who will support their studies. Each module will have dedicated online tutorials to support the learning.
