Continuing into my master’s was the easiest decision I made

Introduction

Hey, my name’s Rangeshh and I’m in my final year of an integrated master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering MEng (Hons). University was such a daunting thought when I was in Sixth Form and like many others, I didn’t know which pathway to choose. I chose mechanical engineering because it had a broad spectrum of knowledge to learn from but with plenty of opportunities to gain expertise in different fields. Coming from a heavy mathematical background, there were so many elements of problem solving through to practical design in every module across each year.

Key highlights

One of my key highlights in Year 1 was the ‘Engineering Challenge’ with plenty of space to apply and create an efficient and sustainable solution to a “buggy” that drops off an object at a specific distance and continues traveling forward.

I’ve always had a flare for numerical simulation techniques such as finite element analysis (FEA), which is something I have also thoroughly enjoyed in my later years of study. Working on different truss structures and optimising an Olympic bicycle frame.

Aside from the academics, there are amazing people that I’ve met and made friends with, to whom I wouldn’t be here without. The community cultivated at Coventry University is something so unique allowing everyone to meet and interact across activities, society events and even sports.

On completion of my third year, I was faced with the decision of continuing with an extra year of study or to enter the industry with a bachelor’s degree. But, at the end of the day, it was one of the easiest decisions I’ve made! I wanted to go ahead and pursue that postgraduate level study to really stand out in such a crowded market. With ties to so many industries and career focused approaches, I knew I’d made the right choice.

A defining moment I had during my time at uni was taking a year away from my studies to complete an industrial placement year and put my knowledge to the test. A truly amazing experience I would recommend everyone explore since it taught me skills that I simply would never have picked up over lectures alone and it really changed my perspective of the working world.

My time on campus

Having a campus university in the heart of such a vibrant city has played a major role. Every day has been a new chance to explore Coventry in an affordable yet exciting way.

Being someone who wants to discover fabulous flavours and delicious dishes from around the world, there’s never a shortage in every corner of the city to keep me fuelled through a long day of lectures and labs. There’s always somewhere to meet with friends, do some shopping and enjoy an evening out after a long week making it the perfect environment to enjoy my student life.

As I’m nearing the end of my time at Coventry University, I always try and give some helpful advice to students - always get involved beyond your lectures. An environment is always built around your curiosity, your needs. Don’t be afraid to ask seniors or staff for guidance, there is so much help out there for every scenario.
