Which degree is best for Mechanical Engineering?

Wanita Jones chose to study mechanical engineering at Coventry University coming through Clearing. She talks about the support students get at the university, the engineering softwares and facilities offered, as well as engineering societies that students can join to have fun and meet new people at events.

Why did you choose mechanical engineering at Coventry University?

I chose mechanical engineering at Coventry University because of the level of support available to the students. I felt like coming here would mean that I could always have a lecturer to talk to if I needed help in any of my modules. I also liked how it was a city campus, and everything that I needed was a walking distance.

I enjoy the maths aspect of my course the most, and seeing the real-world application of what I am learning. I also thoroughly enjoy working in groups!

Did you come to Coventry University via Clearing? If so, was it a positive experience?

I did come through Clearing, and it was a great experience! I was pleased that Coventry University gave me the chance to come and study here.

Would you recommend the mechanical engineering to friends? If so, why?

Yes, I would recommend mechanical engineering at Coventry University. I like how the course is designed and that we got to do hands-on activities in our first year, then got to work using different software such as CAD and MATLAB, throughout the course. I’d also recommend studying this course because it means you can go into many industries, not just engineering. All the skills that you pick up along the way whilst studying to become an engineer, such as communication skills, teamwork and resilience, are useful in many different sectors.

My time on the course has helped me to be more confident when it comes to presenting ideas to a group too. And, it has allowed me to be a better communicator with others around me.

The facilities are fantastic, and we get to use them for our own individual projects as well as the ones which are required for the course. All the technicians and lecturers are very happy for us to bring our own projects to make and are always there if you need any help.

My most memorable moment so far has been meeting many people and friends from all over the world. It has been great to learn about different cultures and experiences.

Advice for students considering mechanical engineering.

Go for it!

You will learn a lot, and it’s a great course because it’s very broad. I would also say to make sure you have a great work-life balance and plan when you are going to do revision and coursework etc., so you stay on top of your workload!

I have had the opportunity to be a part of the Women in Engineering Society. This has positively impacted me as I was able to be the Treasurer which I have never done before, I was able to excel and enjoy the process.

I met so many great people; working with other society members and learning about their experiences was great! We positively impacted others by providing a safe space for anyone who wanted to be a part of the society, as well as holding events where the members could enjoy themselves, have fun and meet new people.

The course has prepared me for the world of work.

On this course there are many opportunities where you work with others, which is what I plan to do when I get into the world of work. Also, learning how to write lab reports in a professional manner like an engineer, as in the world of work I may have to present my findings to others, so learning the structure for it to be clear and concise has been very beneficial.

My future career plan is to be a mechanical engineer and make a positive difference in the world and doing this course will also allow me to go into various industries. My career plans are to go into renewable/sustainable energy.
