Project overview

The pervasive presence of data in the daily lives of European citizens underscores the necessity of acquiring the skills to adeptly navigate this emerging data-centric society. Adult education stands as a potent avenue to engage a substantial portion of the population and provide the necessary support to cultivate data literacy among adult learners. With the mission of enhancing this journey, the DaLi project endeavours to formulate resources that hold the capacity to nurture data literacy within local, regional, and European contexts.
DaLi project is centred around addressing the fundamental aspects of data literacy training for adult learners, particularly in informal settings. This objective is to be realised through the collaborative development, testing, and assessment of pedagogical methodologies, alongside the creation of a toolkit consisting of playful learning resources and educational games.
By adopting a playful approach, our intention is to stimulate a heightened demand for learning and participation, achieved through effective outreach, guidance, and motivational strategies.

Project Objectives

  •  Provide an overview of the state of the field of research on data literacy
  •  Formulate a general framework for understanding data literacy
  •  Identify the data literacy needs of the target user groups (young adults, general adults, seniors)
  •  Define a set flexible pedagogical strategies based on a networked playful learning approach, fostering the development of adult’s data literacy in a variety of non-formal contexts.
  •  Deliver a multilingual toolkit that comprises playful and game-based resources
  •  Develop a framework for the implementation of the learning materials and the toolkit in different contexts
  • Develop a set of policy recommendations for the development of a European Data Literacy framework for citizens
  •  Develop a set of guidelines that serve other adult education institutions to address the topic of data literacy through educational measures.

Impact statement

The DALI project impacts the way that data literacy is developed across Europe by using non-digital game-based learning, engaging organisations, adult educators, policymakers, and the general public. Through collaborative efforts and the development of accessible materials like games and handbooks, DALI has increased awareness and practical application of data literacy concepts among participating institutions and their staff. Engagement with adult education stakeholders through workshops and conferences has prompted reflection and integration into teaching practices, while open access resources have reached a wide audience, attracting hundreds of visits and downloads from various countries. For instance, the five participating universities and their associated partners engaged in exchange on the topic of data literacy, amounting to over 300 individuals in professional capacity who are now aware of data literacy in education contexts, further binforming their practice. For instance, the DaLI games are being used by Coventry City Council’s #covconnect team with the local communities. So far, the project website has recorded over 2023 visits from the four partner countries alone, with the framework downloaded 90 times in English, 55 times in Spanish, 17 times in Norwegian, and 33 times in German. DALI's impact extends from local universities to regional events and even international platforms, positioning it as a valuable resource for promoting data literacy and fostering collaboration across borders.
