Project objectives

The project aimed to explore and maximise leadership development in pre-registration healthcare curricula and prepare new graduates to develop leadership attributes before moving into their qualified professional roles; including potential future clinical leadership roles. The output of this work was intended, therefore, in conjunction with the NHS Leadership Framework, to help address the national driver for increased clinical leadership at all levels, and potentially have a significant impact on future NHS leadership.

Impact statement

A full report was submitted to HEWM in Spring 2015, and following this all three Universities are now in discussions with HEWM to influence and improve leadership development in pre-registration healthcare education across the West Midlands, and with Health Education England.

Alan Taylor presented the work at the European Interprofessional Education Network meeting in Nijmegen in September 2015 and has been invited to prepare a paper for publication in the Journal of Interprofessional Care.
