Project objectives

‘Perspectives of Conflict Transformation from the Middle East and Europe (CTMEE)’ is facilitating research, capacity building, and knowledge exchange between three partner institutions - Coventry University (UK), Kadir Has University (Turkey), and the Arab American University (Palestine). The goal of CTMEE is to jointly explore what types of conflict transformation mechanisms are being utilised in Turkey and Palestine, and how these mechanisms engage with understandings and practices of conflict transformation in Western Europe. A prominent sub-theme in CTMEE is the role of youth in conflict transformation, and project researchers are investigating how youth can play a constructive role in transforming political conflict in both contexts.

Research impact

CTMEE has facilitated numerous opportunities for teaching and training at each of the three partner institutions. For example Coventry University researchers have provided numerous training sessions for academics and civil society leaders on conflict transformation and peacebuilding in both Palestine and Turkey, Arab American University researchers have delivered a series of seminars at Coventry University and Kadir Has University that explore conflict transformation in Palestine, and Kadir Has University researchers have provided support and training for civil society organisations in Palestine.

The research conducted by CTMEE researchers is being disseminated through a series of events and avenues. CTMEE researchers have actively participated in a number of academic and practitioner conferences, including the annual Conference on Human Security in Istanbul and the annual international conference on Conflict Transformation and Peacebuilding in Palestine held at the Arab American University in Jenin.

CTMEE researchers are currently developing an edited book – Conflict Transformation and the Palestinians, and a special issue of the Journal of Conflict Transformation and Security. Both are due to be published in 2015. CTMEE has also motivated the establishment of a Master Program in Conflict Resolution and Development at the Arab American University, which will be a first in the Arab world.
