Overview

After the second year, you have the option of applying for a work placement year or spending 12 months studying abroad to broaden your international perspective.

Students can opt to go on a work placement or study abroad year and if selected, they will be registered onto a module which runs for a full academic year between years 2 and 3. Students must have a confirmed placement or study abroad opportunity two weeks prior to the start of the academic year to participate in the study abroad/placement year, however we encourage international students to confirm their placements earlier to ensure they are able to meet any applicable visa requirements. Students can only progress onto the relevant work placement or study abroad module if they successfully complete the first two years of the course (i.e. having accumulated 240 credits).

Students opting for either the work placement or study abroad module will be registered on a non-credit bearing module and therefore no additional tuition fees apply. While the modules do not bear credits, they do require completion of a marked assessment reflecting on your placement/study abroad or work placement experience. Following successful completion of this assessment, the module selected will appear on your final academic transcript. Students will thus graduate with 360 credits in total, assuming successful completion of their final year.

Please note that the University cannot guarantee any study abroad or work placement opportunities and that such opportunities may be subject to availability, a competitive application process, meeting applicable visa requirements (which may include extending any Tier 4 visa upon successfully securing a placement or study abroad opportunity), and additional costs (e.g. accommodation and travel)). To ensure that you fully understand the requirements in this regard and for further details, please contact the International Office if you are an EU or International student.

Previous students have secured placements at large multinational firms, while others have had the chance to study with some of our partners in Europe and Asia.

During each year of this course, you will create a Digital Portfolio, which will be completed with your final project, in which you will either research a topic of interest or work in collaboration with an industry partner (subject to availability, a competitive application process, and additional costs may apply). For example, previous project subjects range from consumer behaviour in social media and digital advertising to consumer power in the wake of digital marketing tools.

Many aspects of digital marketing and advertising involve creativity and innovation, so we also offer a range of opportunities for you to develop your creative skills. Within your first and second year, you will have approximately 12 contact hours of teaching a week which includes:

  • Medium group teaching: 8 hours of practical classes, seminars or workshops per week
  • Large group teaching: 4 hours of lectures each week.

In your final year, if you are undertaking a project/dissertation, there is a greater emphasis placed on independent study and therefore total contact hours may be reduced.

In addition, you will be expected to undertake a significant amount of self-directed studying and revision in your own time each week, which may include, for example, guided study using hand-outs or online activities.

You will have the opportunity to gain an international experience in many ways. Coventry is a multicultural university, so our typically diverse student and staff body helps to facilitate a multicultural learning environment. However, the fundamental nature of this course is also international in its outlook, drawing on digital marketing best practice from around the world.

You could also choose to spend time abroad, studying or working, either on a summer placement, which can happen during any summer break from your studies, or on the optional placement/study abroad year out. We have long-running partnerships with a number of overseas universities, including KH Leuven in Belgium, School for Higher and Professional Education (SHAPE) in Hong Kong and PSB Academy in Singapore. In the past, marketing students have undertaken industry placements with IBM, L’Oreal, Rolls Royce and Warner Brothers.

We also run a number of collaborative Online International Learning projects on the course, which enables you to work with students across the world on a live project. In the past, students have worked with peers across the world, including USA, Malaysia and Europe.

Throughout the course we aim to provide you with opportunities to visit relevant companies to gain a real-life experience of marketing, either at home or abroad. Previous cohorts of students have travelled to universities in Malaysia and Dubai to learn more about the culture and different approaches to teaching. They have also visited Leuven in Belgium as part of the annual Marketing Week conference with an opportunity to take part in a competition to create a brand.

Please note that all placement and international opportunities are subject to availability, a competitive application process, meeting applicable visa requirements, and additional fees may apply.
