This MA Management (Advance Standing) is aimed at managers with two or more years of professional experience. This flexible work-based course has real-world applications and has been designed to help maximise your impact at work, enhance your professional skills and boost your career prospects by converting your prior experience and professional accreditations into a master’s qualification – all in as little as six months.
This course supports the production of a research project, developed in collaboration with your employer (if applicable) and a course-based supervisor, to investigate and address a real-life management issue. It’s your chance to step back from the day-to-day and get the time and help you need to focus on an issue and develop an effective solution that’s backed by rigorous research. You’ll be encouraged to think strategically, tap into your organisation’s data, or previous real-life experiences, and utilise analytical skills and critical thinking to spot opportunities, solve problems and help create meaningful change.
Delivered online with the option for students who are able to attend up to three face-to-face sessions located at Coventry University’s campus within Coventry city-centre, this course is built to fit around the existing demands of life and work. For those who are not able to attend face-to-face sessions the digital online content and seminars are also available, meaning flexibility is increased.* You can study where and when it suits you, with expert guidance from a dedicated course supervisor, who will support you in the development and execution of your research while helping to broaden your perspective and develop your managerial skills.

As part of the course, you will work in collaboration with your organisation (if applicable) and a course-based supervisor to initiate and deliver a research project that’s focused on a real-life management issue. It’s your chance to explore new or familiar challenges from a unique perspective, with ongoing support from experts based at Coventry Business School. The aim is to have your work benefit both you and your employer, who should be able to access your findings digitally and distribute them across the business.
You will undertake two modules in this course, including a Management Research Project module, and a Research Management Skills module which will give you the opportunity to develop the skills needed to effectively carry out your research.

This course has been specifically tailored for online delivery, helping you to study anytime and anywhere, while having the option to attend up to three face-to-face sessions on campus at Coventry University, in Coventry’s city-centre or via video seminars with academics and peers alike.*. Successful completion of this course will see you produce a practice-focused research project, allowing you to gain a master’s qualification while developing your critical thinking and decision-making skills.
You will have the opportunity to tackle a real-world management issue, enhance your practical management and project skills, and learn more about management as a discipline. The course also aims to bring real benefits to your employer (if you’re currently in employment), who should be able to access and share your research findings easily via a webpage, interactive PDF or another digital artefact. You will also have the chance to develop your communication skills, which will help you to clearly convey complex information and present your findings appropriately to stakeholders.

The main study themes covered on the course are:
- Management Research Skills: the course aims to develop problem definition and management research skills in designing and applying management research, data collection, data management and analysis methods in order for you to produce a full management research report/dissertation with recommendations.
- Current Management Thinking: through the supervision of a practice-focused academic, the course aims to educate and inform you as a manager, leader and organisational member in original and current thinking about management in support of your own professional management practice.
- Management Practice and Theory: throughout your time on the course, we aim to develop your critical thinking skills and creative approaches to current management practice and theory.
- Professional Skills Development: the course aims to provide an environment where professional skills can be developed to enhance self-direction, communication, decision-making, innovation, communication and collegiality.
Teaching on the course is designed to be delivered flexibly, minimising disruption to you and your employer and accommodating part-time study.
Sessions are held online via digital technology with the option of up to three face-to-face at Coventry University’s Coventry city-centre campus, for those who are able and wish to attend. These face to face sessions are optional, however they provide additional opportunities to collaborate and engage with key academics and your fellow peers.* Online materials may be accessed anytime and anywhere. You’ll receive an introduction to the methods and skills needed to conduct your research project module, and have the chance to work alongside others on the course to frame the development of your research problem.
After submitting your research proposal, you will be allocated a supervisor who will continue to provide you with support as you begin to conduct your research and write your project.
This course will be assessed through the outputs of the modules studied – firstly, through assessment of a research proposal, followed by the assessment of a dissertation and a related digital artefact.

On successful completion of the course, you should be able to:
- Identify and clearly specify management problems in order to determine the effects that they have upon an organisation
- Critically review relevant, contemporary academic and practitioner literature relating to management and the organisational context
- Systematically and creatively execute appropriate research design using selected research methods to ethically examine defined management problems
- Demonstrate effective management of a project, recognising and adapting to change throughout
- Effectively and consistently present, evaluate and analyse data in the investigation of management
- Reach well-researched conclusions and articulated judgements based upon management research, to create a range of recommendations
- Quantify and critically examine the impact of complex management interventions on an organisation
- Demonstrate strengthening of your professional practice through reflective self-directed learning and communication of findings to an academic audience and organisational stakeholders
Throughout your online learning there will be a number of subject specialists, tutors & experience officers there to support your journey and ensure a comprehensive experience. Academics including Module Leaders, Principle Lecturers and Associate Lectures will support you throughout your online teaching and learning, encouraging critical debates, facilitating live seminars, hosting group/peer collaborative sessions.
Student experience officers will guide you through general questions, support with technical queries, signpost you to all and any of the appropriate services you may require and be your guide throughout. You will also have access to a Progression Coach as and when you feel any additional support is required, your progression coach can cover a wide range of mentoring in areas ranging from: Practical writing skills, time management, digital /video presentations.
*If you choose to attend the optional face-to-face sessions, it will be your responsibility to obtain the appropriate visa to attend such sessions, and will therefore be responsible for any visa application processes, costs, travel and accommodation and any other expenses associated with attending such sessions. The University will not support visa applications for this course.

Postgraduate UK/EU students

If the duration of the course is longer than one academic year, we may increase the fee for each subsequent year of study but any such increases will be no more than inflation. Following the UK’s exit from the European Union, EU students should be aware that there may be a change to UK laws following the UK’s exit, this may change their student status, their eligibility to study part time, and/or their eligibility for student finance. We will act in accordance with the UK’s laws in force in relation to student tuition fees and finance from time to time.
Postgraduate international students
The tuition fee that is stated on the course webpage and in the prospectus for the first year of study will apply. We will review our tuition fees each year. For international students, we may increase fees for each subsequent year of study but such increases will be no more than 5% above inflation.
