In more detail...

  • Facilitates the development of skills, knowledge and competencies as psychological therapists with evidenced based interventions to maximise professional development.
  • Gaining a master's qualification in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy gives students the ability to seek promotional opportunities within the psychological therapies field and improve their career prospects.

Your main study themes are:

  • Research Methods: Aims to give students a direct practical experience of how to design, conduct, and report experimental research. You will progress from having the conceptual understanding that is necessary to develop research proposals, through the practical considerations involved in the design and implementation of research designs, to the skills and knowledge required to summarise, analyse and present research findings. You will engage in supervised but independent work at an advanced level. You will be encouraged to integrate and practice the skills acquired during the course and to investigate in depth at Masters level an area of specific interest to you. This will be comprised of a systematic literature review of predominately peer reviewed journal articles, to produce a literature in a format that would be suitable for publication in an appropriate review journal.

The MSc course is semesterised, offered on a part-time basis, and is delivered using key-note on-line lectures, self-study online materials, face-to-face tutorials, and guided reading.

The first series of lead lectures in Semester 1 focus on introducing quantitative research methods in psychology (Lectures 1 – 6), and the second series focus on introducing qualitative research methods in psychology and aim to build your awareness and understanding of the conceptual and ethical considerations for planning a research project. There are two lectures in Semester 2 aiming to build your knowledge from Semester 1 on literature searching aiming to introduce the concept of conducting systematic literature reviews.

Lectures and associated self-study guided material will be available to you via Moodle. The purpose of the self-study online materials is for you to gain “hands-on” experience of applying quantitative and qualitative research techniques and to promote awareness of the fundamental principles for designing and planning a research project. Thus, whilst working through the materials you will participate in tasks aimed at developing your ability of working with quantitative and qualitative data and complete activities to facilitate your understanding of how to develop a research question and turn it into a methodologically sound project.

You will be encouraged to use Moodle forum to ask questions related to lecture or self-study guided materials throughout the week.

This course will be assessed using a variety of methods which will could vary depending upon the module. Assessment methods include a research Proposal and a systematic literature review.

The Coventry University Group assessment strategy ensures that our courses are fairly assessed and allows us to monitor student progression towards the achieving the intended learning outcomes. Assessments may include exams, individual assignments or group work elements.

On successful completion of the MSc CBT top-up, you should be able to:

  • Critically appraise the differences between qualitative and quantitative research methods
  • Critically evaluate research literature
  • Critically evaluate quantitative or qualitative research designs and methods of data collection
  • Critically evaluate the ethics of doing psychological research
  • Systematically review and critically evaluate a specific area of literature within the field of cognitive behavioural therapy
  • Demonstrate the ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Work within ethical guidelines and demonstrate initiative and skill in planning, problem-solving, information gathering and investigation
  • Structure and present information in a format suitable for publication in an appropriate peer-reviewed journal

For the MSc top-up course, you will be required to attend two induction sessions scheduled at the beginning of each semester. In addition you will be encouraged to use Moodle forum to ask questions related to lecture or self-study guided materials throughout the course length. For the second piece of coursework you will be provided with 10 hours academic supervision.

Career prospects

Adequate access to a choice of effective psychological therapies is a key Government priority. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) has a continually evolving evidence base with emphasis on therapy outcomes and robust, universally applicable treatment methods.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is the most effective of available treatments across a range of psychological problems, specifically depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD and phobia. As such, CBT is the basis of much mental health practice. It has become Government policy for NHS Trusts to provide patients/clients with access to CBT.

Achieving this award would provide students with the opportunity to seek roles within the psychological therapies field and broaden their career prospects.

Where our graduates work

Recent graduates have gained employment in a range of therapeutic services, both in primary and secondary care. Graduates of the course have successfully progressed to supervisory roles and posts in management.
