How to nail your Clearing call

With the right preparation, you can tackle your Clearing call with confidence.

In 2024 Clearing starts on 5 July and closes on 17 October at 6pm. Here you will find plenty of useful resources to offer advice and support, and to help you make the best decisions for your future.

Here’s our handy guide to nailing your Clearing call - good luck!

1

Before the call

Don’t wait until results day to start thinking about your options. Many universities start listing their Clearing courses in late June so it’s a good idea to be prepared.

Make sure you have everything ready before you start calling Clearing hotlines. Things to remember include:

  • Your UCAS ID number and exam results
  • A list of questions you might want to ask
  • A copy of your CV
  • A notepad or device to take down key information
  • A quiet space to make phone calls
  • A charged phone

During the call

Clearing teams are there to support you in making the right decision, so stay confident and don’t be afraid to speak honestly. The call is your opportunity to show a university that you have the enthusiasm and passion to study with them, so share any relevant work experience alongside your qualifications.

Universities are likely dealing with hundreds of calls at any one time, so be prepared to wait a short while. If a line is engaged, don't waste time – move on to your next option and try again later.

After the call

If all goes to plan, you’ll now have that all-important verbal offer from your preferred university – congratulations! However, there are still a few things to do before your Clearing journey is complete.

If you receive an offer and want to accept it, you will need to add the Clearing choice in your UCAS Hub. Remember, you can only apply for one choice at a time, so if you change your mind and want to apply elsewhere, you will first need to speak with the university to cancel your place before applying again.

You should also start thinking about your accommodation options.
