About us
The School of Social Sciences and Humanities brings together a wide range of disciplines including English, History, Politics, Psychology, Criminology and Social Work. We offer a vibrant and innovative environment as we embrace an ever-changing external world.
Research-informed learning is thoroughly embedded in our community of learning and students have the opportunity to engage with published academics across a range of our courses.
Our students are encouraged to challenge themselves and to widen their skills. Preparing our students for future careers is fundamental. The School has designated Employment Tutors who offer one-to-one sessions to guide students through what to expect at assessment centres, how to write a winning CV and the opportunity to practise interview techniques.
Many courses are a mixture of theory, laboratory based experiments, workshops and tutorials, with a strong focus on interaction from examining how people think and interact to studying a range of issues relating to crime, punishment and deviance in society.
For students studying Forensic Investigations, we have our very own crime scene houses which are video and audio enabled.
Our courses have a strong international dimension, as our students have the opportunity to enjoy designated overseas trips or by taking the study abroad option at the end of Year 2.
We have developed an international educational and research profile, collaborating with a number of institutions in the UK, Europe and overseas. Our ambitions are to grow and diversify high quality provision that benefits students, research, and industry in the UK and overseas. We also run a number of field trips, with destinations in previous years including Tokyo, San Francisco, South Africa, Amsterdam and Sri Lanka.
We currently have links with institutions in Costa Rica, Mexico and the University of the West Indies. The School has a dedicated Languages Centre and is home to the Confucius Institute with its strong links to China.
Our graduates have gone on to work with the BBC, Network Rail, JP Morgan, the NHS, The National Trust, British Army and the House of Commons – to name but a few!
