Work in the UK for non-UK students

Through our UK Work Experience (UK WEX) team, non-UK undergraduate and postgraduate students can gain access to work experience and work-related opportunities in the UK.

All of our work experience opportunities can be flexible around your studies, and are also eligible for financial grants.

Two types of opportunities are covered by the UK Work Experience Team:

  • Organised work experience - placements of up to twelve weeks designed to fit around studying
  • Certification of self-organised work experience - you reflect on the learning and experience gained from a work placement that you have have arranged for yourself

Organised Work Experience

Our UK WEX team have lots of experience in successfully placing students on valuable work placements. We work in partnership with a wide range of local and regional organisations, including those within the private, public and voluntary sectors. Placements can be arraged for either individuals or small groups.

As part of the Social Engagement for Employability Development (SEED) programme, you will also have the opportunity to work with organisations that aim to make a social impact. This primarily involves group based projects and can range from a few days to two or three months.

In any work placement you will get a chance to utilise and develop your unique skills and talents, whilst gaining valuable experience through working on a real piece of work. Pre-agreed travelling expenses can also be paid.

Once you've completed a work placement, you will be issued with a certificate and usually provided with a reference by your employer. Global Leaders Programme points are also available.

Work Experience Certification

If you are already undertaking or have recently undertaken paid or voluntary UK work experience, you can gain recognition of what you have learned by preparing a piece of reflective writing. Any paid or unpaid work that hasn't been organised by the Centre for Global Engagement or by a Coventry University faculty is eligible.

Workshops are run to help you carry out a skills audit that is focused on your eligible work experience. You are also introduced to reflective writing and helped with how to do it effectively. Reflective writing is a useful academic skill, but is becoming increasingly common in industry as part of Continuing Professional Development.

On completion, your piece of reflective writing is submitted and graded with a Pass, Merit or Distinction, and a Certificate of Reflection and Development is awarded for successful submissions. Global Leaders Programme points are also available.

What Our Students Say

During my internship at the Oxfam Charity Organisation I was able to develop and build on the studies from my MSc International Business Degree at Coventry University. I was given the opportunity to apply marketing concepts and online marketing, engage in providing customer service and experience how a charity operates.
