More than just a degree
Not only is Coventry University a welcoming environment, but you are also free to dream, believe in your future and really BE who you want to BE.

What you'll study
Through studying this course, you will be taught the skills required to become proficient in one or two languages (to at least level C1 in the Common European Framework, CEFR), with the option to attain competency (B1 in CEFR) in another language. You can acquire a foundation in the study of how languages themselves are learned and taught, both face-to-face and online, to adults as well as children.
In addition, you can take optional translation modules which aim to combine both theory and practice in a variety of linguistic contexts, e.g. literary, journalistic, technical, and political and economic discourse.
This should be achieved through the options to study French, Spanish and Mandarin as these are among the key foreign languages rated as most useful to business by successive Confederation of British Industry (CBI)/Pearson Education and Skills Surveys. Other languages rated as highly important by CBI/Pearson Education, including German, Italian and Japanese, are also available at no extra cost through the Add+vantage programme of employability enhancement modules.
Students whose first language (L1) is not English will have an opportunity to learn English as a second language.
We regularly review our course content, to make it relevant and current for the benefit of our students. For these reasons, course modules may be updated.
How you'll learn
The course is taught using a variety of traditional, digital and innovative teaching methods and platforms.
Teaching and learning methods include lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials devoted to regular formative assessments. Study trips are also used to enhance experiential learning, as well as taught sessions in a range of locations outside of the classroom. Other forms of learning include online working and research, self-directed study and group / collaborative work.
Students will also have the opportunity to create a personal online website (Domain of One’s Own – DoOO).

International experience opportunities
Intercultural and international engagement forms the core of the course design from the induction sessions throughout students' journey to graduation. You will have the chance to be actively engaged with international students across the university (Culturae Mundi), but also beyond, through engagement in Collaborative Online International Learning projects (COIL). Other ways include partner institutions and involvement with the Confucius Institute (CI) and assessment via your website (Domain of One’s Own - DoOO). You will be invited to attend tailored conversation workshops where you will be encouraged to develop and increase your confidence and augment your developing speaking skills through practice with a native speaker.
Learning a new language means learning a new culture, and it becomes even more beneficial when combined with skills-broadening modules. It’s unbelievable how my language, intercultural and interpersonal skills have been developed during the course. It’s been a great time at Coventry University with the help of their supportive staff. It’s been a once-in-a-lifetime experience!
